A 22-year-old man was killed and another man injured in separate shootings in the West Side's Lawndale neighborhood early this morning, authorities said.

About 12:50 a.m., the 22-year-old man was shot in the lower back while sitting inside a parked vehicle, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The shooting happened in the vicinity of the 1300 block of South Harding Avenue, police said.

Paramedics rushed the man to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:49 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The medical examiner's office identified the man as Damian Barnes, of the 4200 block of West Van Buren Street.

About 2:50 a.m., a man in his 40s showed up at Rush University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the hip, Alfaro said.

Chicago police arrested a 28-year-old man Friday after a home search yielded unregistered guns, drugs, a large amount of cash and two badly mistreated pitbulls, police said.

Acting on information that the man was mistreating animals, officers executed a search warrant at 11 a.m. at his home in the 12800 block of South Green Street in the West Pullman neighborhood, the Chicago Police Department announced in a release.

Inside the home, officers found cannabis, cocaine, and more than $1,500 in cash, police said. Officers also found a Yugoslavian semi-automatic assault rifle and a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun, neither of which was registered as legally required, police said.

Two dogs in the home, one male and one female, appeared to have been mistreated. The female dog showed scarring around the face consistent with dogfighting, an open wound near its mouth, urine-stained paws, a deformed front leg and protruding hip bones, police said.

"These injuries were so extensive and the dog appeared to have been so overly mated that it may have to be euthanized," police said in the the release.

Police arrested the man, Jarcivius Taylor, on several charges, including aggravated cruelty to animals, possession of a controlled substance and a bail bond violation due to the gun possession, which are all felony charges. Lesser charges included cannabis possession, cruelty to animals, and weapons registration charges.

The investigation leading to Taylor’s arrest included officers from the Bureau of Organized Crime, Gang Investigations Division, Animal Crimes Team, and the Calumet District Tactical Team.

Authorities planned to file a petition to take ownership of the dogs, which Taylor refused to give over voluntarily.

Staff report

5:55 p.m. CST, January 12, 2013
A man who robbed a shoe store at gunpoint this week was captured after someone chased him into a nearby coin laundry in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said today.

Eleizer Degaldo, 29, of the 1400 block of North Monticello Avenue, was charged with two counts of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon in the Thursday attack, according to a statement from police News Affairs.

Degaldo was scheduled to appear in court today but information about the hearing was not available immediately.

Degaldo and an accomplice walked into a shoe store on the 4000 block of West North Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday and forced the employees at gunpoint to the rear of the building, ordering them to open the safe, the statement said.

When Degaldo and his cohort discovered that the main safe could not be opened in a “timely manner,’’ they fled out the front door with cash from the store along with property from store employees, the statement said.

Grand Central District officers arrived on the scene and located the employees, who were not injured.

As the officers questioned the victims, one of the officers learned that a local resident chased the gunman into a nearby coin laundry in the 4100 block of West Grand Avenue, and Degaldo was arrested there, the statement said. Degaldo had the gun and stolen cash, police said.

Area North detectives are still seeking the accomplice Saturday evening.
