Default The Halls Community Park Board also has announced a $1,000 scholarship

The Halls Community Park Board also has announced a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded in honor of Newsom to a graduating senior at Halls High School and recently held its first Chris Newsom Baseball Tournament.

"Chris was one of those people that would help anybody for anything, and to be able to help another student with a scholarship in his name is a great honor," mother Mary Newsom said.

Husband Hugh Newsom noted that he and his wife had one day hoped to watch their son's grandchildren play at their neighborhood park, but a fatal carjacking in January 2007 forever robbed them of that chance.

Newsom, 23, a Halls graduate who attended Pellissippi State Technical Community College before becoming a carpenter, and Christian, who majored in sociology at UT, were on a date when they were accosted, kidnapped and forced into a house on Chipman Street where they were brutalized, raped and killed. Four suspects await trial in the slayings. A fifth was convicted two weeks ago of federal accessory to carjacking charges for hiding out one of the slaying suspects.

Anyone interested in contributing to the Christian fund or learning more about the tournament may call the dealership at 865-970-2615.

Bryant said the firm is still struggling with the 60-page application to get tax-exempt status.

"If someone out there knows how to write a 501(c)3 (nonprofit status application), please call, because we are at our wit's end."
