Paraphrasing from a YouTube comment I read a while back:

Just because someone says they're Christian does not always mean they are. If I say I'm a Reese's peanut butter cup, does that mean I really am? No, I would be pretending I was, just as the Popes pretended to be Christian.

lol, really? A Reese's peanut butter cup, what a hilariously stupid comparison. I remember that from months back because it is just so stupid.

In my opinion though, the Popes never really believed their tripe, but just used it to control the docile, serf-like masses. Galileo was persecuted because his ideas challenged the very foundation that the Pope used to dominate society even though Galileo professed to be a believer, not because he was a heretic.
