Americans had better cold-weather gear in Korea than the commies, right? Well, yes and no. Starting in 1951 US troops were issued improved versions of winter clothing than was used in WW2, such as the "Mickey Mouse" boots, M51 olive-drab field jacket or parka, gloves, mittens, etc., many of which remained in use into the 1980s when Gore-Tex, polar fleece and other newer materials and garments were introduced. Chinese and North Koreans wore cotton-quilted uniforms and ushanka hats similar to what the Soviet army wore in WW2, and in many cases were actual Soviet-manufacture items. The video below makes fun of it, but they were good warm and functional cold-weather dress even though they were more simple-looking compared to what Americans wore.
