Why didn't they take more pictures from multiple angles and get some closer up shots? It looks interesting enough to merit further investigation. There's plenty of examples of geology on Earth that look like they might have been crafted, but they're natural, and this is a totally different planet they know even less about.
Who's to say sand, water, or wind (I heard they got very powerful sandstorms on Mars, like category 5 hurricane, just larger, and with sand) erosion couldn't have done that millions of years ago?
We already know that rocks can form, or naturally break away, or get carved away by erosion in geometric patterns. Take basalt columns for example, or Devil's Tower in Wyoming, or natural bridges/arches, etc.
