At the very end, Adolf Hitler expelled Goering from the NSDAP and rescinded his appointment to take over in the event of the Fuehrer's death or incapacitation.

However, I think this was a misunderstanding on the part of Hitler of Goering's actions as the War ended. A general breakdown in communications led AH to believe that Goering was usurping his powers, which was not the case. Bormann may have encouraged the Fuehrer in his mistaken belief that Goering had betrayed him.

In any event, the Reichmarschall's stellar testimony and defiant demeanor at the Nuremberg kangaroo court proceedings more than made up for any possible missteps that he may have made in the final days of the War.
