Bahrain will normalize ties with Israel, Trump announces

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Bahrain will normalize ties with Israel at a White House ceremony next week, President Donald Trump said Friday on Twitter, less than a month after the United Arab Emirates agreed to normalize ties with the Jewish state.

Trump said at the White House that he believed more Arab nations would soon sign on to normalization with Israel, and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner outlined a strategy to the dealmaking: Removing the issue of Palestine as a top priority for Arabs and Muslims, as it has been for decades.

“Another HISTORIC breakthrough today!” Trump exclaimed in his Twitter announcement. “Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain agree to a Peace Deal – the second Arab country to make peace with Israel in 30 days!”

‘Treacherous blow’: Palestinian groups denounce Bahrain-Israel peace deal

Palestinian factions, from the PLO to Hamas and Islamic Jihad, have condemned Bahrain’s decision to join the UAE in recognizing Israel, calling it a betrayal of the Palestinian cause.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Bahrain will join the Emirates in signing a declaration of peace with Israel next week. The UAE had agreed to recognize Israel last month, the first Arab country to do so in 26 years.

The agreement is “another treacherous blow to the Palestinian cause,” said the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), also known as Fatah.

Bahrain’s step is “extremely dangerous” and “torpedoes the Arab peace initiative, the decisions of the Arab and Islamic summits, and international legitimacy,” the PLO added, calling on Manama to “immediately retreat from this step that causes great harm to the inalienable national rights of the Palestinian people.”

Similar reactions came from Iran’s former Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who also served as foreign policy adviser to Ali Larijani, speaker of the Iranian parliament until May. He called the Bahraini settlement with the “Zionist entity” a “great betrayal in the liberation of Al-Quds” – the Arabic name for Jerusalem.

“The reckless should not pave the way for the Zionist agenda. They should think about the difficult days ahead and draw lessons from history. Tomorrow it will be [too] late,” Amir-Abdollahian tweeted, adding, “The American lifeline has been corroding for years.”

Kosovo’s Jews cheer their Muslim-majority state’s new deal with Israel

(JTA) — For Flori Dedoni, a member of the tiny Jewish community of Kosovo, the news that his country is establishing formal diplomatic ties with Israel is cause for celebration.

Until last week, Israel was among the dozens of countries that had not recognized the Muslim-majority territory sandwiched between Albania and Serbia.

“When someone learns I’m Jewish, they usually ask sometime during the conversation why Israel doesn’t recognize us,” Dedoni said. “Now, finally it’s happening and the feeling is just festive. Plus, I don’t have to explain anymore.”

Israel’s implied recognition of Kosovo is part of a three-way deal announced on Sept. 4 by the White House. According to the announcement, Serbia, which claims ownership of Kosovo’s territory and has fought against international recognition of its declaration of independence in 2008, has agreed to cooperate on some economic issues with the government of the breakaway region.

The deal stipulates that both countries will open embassies in Jerusalem — a development that Israel and the United States are advancing despite opposition by the Palestinians and the European Union, who say that the city should only be recognized as Israel’s capital after a peace deal with the Palestinians.

(JTA) — Ebrahim Dahood Nonoo, the leader of Bahrain’s tiny Jewish community, was among the Gulf country’s approximately 50 Jews who thought peace with Israel would never arrive “in our lifetimes.”

“It just didn’t seem possible,” Nonoo told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency from Manama, the capital city where he lives with his wife.

Israel only has relations with two other Arab nations in the region, and most of its neighbors have long isolated the Jewish state and at times even gone to war with it.

“We can talk to our relatives and we can feel more comfortable now about going and coming. It actually changes quite a lot,” said Nonoo, a businessman who in 2001 became the first Jewish person appointed to serve on to the country’s Shura Council, the upper chamber of its National Assembly.

The Jewish community in Bahrain, an island nation of some 1.5 million people, dates back about 140 years to the late 1800s, when a group of Iraqi Jews arrived in search of economic opportunities. (...) “They were kind of misfits coming out of Iraq,” Nonoo said of the first arrivals. “In other words, they weren’t getting anywhere in Iraq, so they decided to try their luck in Bahrain.”

A smaller number of Jews also settled in Bahrain from Iran at around the same time. At its height in the 1920s and ’30s, the community had about 800 members, according to Nonoo, though others have said the number was as high as 1,500. Though community members mixed socially with Bahraini Muslims, they mainly married within the community and lived close to each other in Manama. Members continued to speak a Jewish dialect of Iraqi Arabic and still do.

In 1935, a member of the Cartier family, the Jewish clan who founded the eponymous jewelry company, passed through on a business trip and ended up donating money to build a synagogue and bring in a rabbi, according to Nonoo. Over the next 10 years, the community continued to flourish economically and gathered in the synagogue for services.

“[That] was a fantastic time for all of them,” Nonoo said.

KRASNAIYA SLOBODA, Azerbaijan (JTA) — A 19th-century silver Kiddush cup. Faded Soviet propaganda magazines from the 1920s. Clandestine letters mailed from the front by Jewish soldiers battling Nazis. Medallions from Azerbaijan’s bruising 1992 war against Armenia.

These are among hundreds of artifacts on display at Azerbaijan’s new Museum of Mountain Jews in the remote town of Krasnaiya Sloboda, an all-Jewish shtetl of about 3,500 inhabitants and two active synagogues 25 miles south of the Azerbaijani-Russian border.

The only problem: The global pandemic has prompted Azerbaijan to close its borders to foreign tourists. As a result, the museum is closed until further notice.

It was to have been inaugurated earlier this year by President Ilham Aliyev and the three Russian Jewish oligarchs who financed its construction. Invited guests from Israel and elsewhere were scheduled to attend.

But everything was canceled after the coronavirus first appeared in Azerbaijan.

One of the museum’s greatest treasures is the Slashed Book, a siddur used by a local rabbi hundreds of years ago to protect himself from the sword of a Muslim general whose army had come to attack Jews living in the area.

“The general tried to stab the rabbi, but instinctively the rabbi held the prayer book in front of him and it got cut in half — nothing happened to him,” said Pisakh Issakov, the top appointed municipal official in Krasnaiya Sloboda. “The Muslim saw this as a sign: ‘If your religion protects you this much, I have nothing to do here.’ That book has been passed from generation to generation, and now it has come back to us.”

The museum’s construction was financed by Russian billionaire property developer God Semenovich Nisanov, a vice president of the World Jewish Congress, along with two other Moscow-based Jewish oligarchs also born in Krasnaiya Sloboda: businessman Zarakh Iliev and German Zakharyaev, vice president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.

(JTA) — The United States is committed to preserving Israel’s qualitative military edge in the Middle East, Defense Secretary Mark Esper told his Israeli counterpart.

“A cornerstone of our defense relationship is preserving Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region,” Esper told Defense Minister Benny Gantz at the Pentagon on Tuesday.

“The United States is committed to that, and the Department of Defense is committed to that imperative. We will continue to support the longstanding U.S. policy to maintain Israel’s security.”

His comments came on the same day that Reuters reported that the United States is negotiating the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates and plans to have a letter of agreement prepared by early December.

(JTA) — Less than 100 years after Israel’s founding as the homeland for the Jewish people in 1948, the “Arab-Israeli conflict” appears to be winding down. The Sept. 15 White House ceremony celebrating a peace treaty between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, and a peace declaration between Israel and Bahrain, marks another advance in Israel’s regional integration. It also delinks resolution of Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians and the creation of an independent Palestinian state from the broader question of its acceptance by the rest of the Arab world.

As the normalization train moves forward, the most pressing question is when, not if, another country jumps aboard.

Though the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains unresolved, the promise of a warm peace among Israeli, Emirati and Bahraini citizens and businesspeople has the potential to change the region in profound ways by demonstrating the tangible, real-world benefits of people-to-people ties and cooperation.

Kushner has been a very busy boy. Whats the current list now in these last 2 months something like 5 or 6 countries have just miraculously at the same time decided we will have a working relationship with the israelis. Interesting to see how this is going to play out, I believe its because israel needs some friends in the region as iran grows more and more powerful they want to use their other arab buddies to counter that power. This of course all the while they continue to bomb syria and lebanon without provocation destroying and killing their enemies. Expect to see israeli companies moving in and making deals in areas they had little to no access to.

That's because the jews have managed to corrupt the so-called leaders of these Arab countries. Middle Easterners have their greedy, opportunistic cucks/sell-outs too, just like white people. I'm sure that most Arabs/Muslims are outraged at these disgraceful "peace deals", but if they protest publicly, they risk getting thrown in jail, tortured and killed.

Muslim countries that are controlled by jews, especially secular ones like Egypt, are known for suppressing pro-Palestinian sentiments in violent ways. And that's one of the main reasons why Egypt is praised as a "moderate" Arab country in the "Western" (read: jewish) media. It's utterly grotesque.

West Bank settler homes approved by Israel for first time since UAE & Bahrain peace deals

In a move that ends an eight-month lull in expansion, Israel approved more than 2,000 new homes in settlements across the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.

The Israeli authorities gave the go-ahead to 2,166 new homes in the West Bank, AFP reported, citing official figures. Israel signed agreements to normalize relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain less than a month ago, and was expected to freeze its plans to annex areas in the West Bank.

However, Wednesday's move deals a blow to hopes for a wider Israeli-Arab peace, according to the NGO Peace Now, which monitors settlement expansion. It also noted that the decision signals Israel's rejection of Palestinian statehood. The latest expansion is expected to be doubled, with around 2,000 more homes to be approved on Thursday, Peace Now said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "is moving ahead at full steam toward solidifying the de facto annexation of the West Bank," the NGO said in a statement on the move. The expansion will make 2020 the biggest year since 2012 for the construction of new units, according to the group.

I was a strange enough creature as it was: young, female and civilian, traveling with a mostly male, mostly military delegation; low ranking, but representing the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the top-ranked organization in the delegation. Its ranking was so far above the people in the field that one of my friends at the U.S. Navy base in Bahrain said that getting a call from me was like getting a call from Mt. Olympus.

I was a policy analyst in the U.S. Department of Defense in the late 1990s. As part of an effort to build cooperation between U.S. and Middle Eastern allies to combat the spread of weapons of mass destruction, I traveled several times to Bahrain and once each to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

In Bahrain, the fear was different. In my wildest nightmares I imagined being called out loudly as a Jew and all heads turning in my direction. My fear of being seen as an outsider was magnified by the nature of the country itself, which is marked by social inequality, sectarian discrimination and police repression. Among the Kingdom’s half million citizens, the in-group is composed of Sunni Muslims, with the ruling family at the center. Next come Shia Muslims and a few dozen Jews.

As an American and a member of a high-level delegation, I moved easily across lines. I could speak up and be heard in meetings with men twice my age. I ate lunch with the three female Bahrain Defense Force medical officers who attended our meetings, which would have been inappropriate behavior for my male colleagues. I went shopping in the pearl and gold markets in the evening with the guys from the delegation, while black-veiled Bahraini women shopped in quiet malls during the day.

That’s when I realized that I was safe. I was a privileged, protected “other.” In spite of my fears, if I had revealed my Jewishness, I would probably have suffered nothing more than a moment of uncomfortable silence.

I left government service long ago and now I live in Israel. I assumed I would never go back to the Gulf, but with Bahrain and the UAE opening diplomatic relations with Israel, it just might be possible. This time, I would be coming not from Mt. Olympus, but from Mt. Moriah, the holy plateau in the heart of Jerusalem, which sits just across the valley from my home.

In fact, 22 hotels in Moroccan cities are entirely reserved for Moroccan Jews who come to visit during the holiday.

Sudan will normalize ties with Israel, Trump announces

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Sudan will become the third Arab country in the past two months to normalize ties with Israel, continuing the trend of Arab states’ willingness to advance ties with the Jewish state even without a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

President Donald Trump announced the agreement on Friday. According to a joint statement released by Israel, Sudan and the U.S., the two countries will “end the state of belligerence between their nations.”

It is also symbolically significant because its capital, Khartoum, is where the Arab League met in 1967 after the Six-Day War and issued its “three no’s” to reject any engagement with Israel whatsoever and to continue the state of war.
