Sharp rise in asylum applications in Germany

In 2021, asylum applications made in Germany increased significantly, as people continue to flee Afghanistan and migration resumes following the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, there was a sharp increase in asylum applications made in Germany. The numbers reached levels not seen since 2017, when over 222,600 people applied for protection in Germany, mostly people fleeing the civil war in Syria. The Taliban takeover in Afghanistan and the subsequent economic collapse of the country has led to a significant increase in applications from Afghanistan.

More than 31,000 Afghans applied for asylum last year. Nevertheless, the largest number of asylum applications come from people fleeing Syria - with more than 70,000 applications, according to BAMF statistics.

According to figures from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), Germany accepted around 190,800 asylum applications in 2021. This marks a sharp increase of almost 70,000 from 2020 which saw almost 122,000 asylum applications lodged in Germany.

EU and UNHCR raise alarm over pushback methods in Poland, Latvia and Lithuania

European Union and UNHCR officials have announced that Latvia, Lithuania and Poland still use "pushbacks and other violations of human rights" at the borders to keep migrants out. They added that they are also denying access to aid groups trying to help people in the border region with Belarus.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson told lawmakers that border tensions between Latvia, Lithuania and Poland and neighboring Belarus had "de-escalated significantly" in recent months. But Johansson stressed that despite this trend, the three EU member states still engaged in questionable tactics at their borders.

She stressed that Latvia, Lithuania and Poland must "have legislation where pushbacks are not accepted and not legalized," as pushbacks are considered to be illegal under EU law and international UN agreements.

"People still have the right to apply for asylum, they still have the right to have access to the asylum process. We still have to be true to our values and to our treaty," Johansson added. Migrants who suffer pushbacks might not only face violence but are also routinely denied their right to apply for asylum and to have their case heard.

French authorities have claimed that the number of migrants rescued by French authorities after shipwrecks in the English Channel tripled in 2021 to over a thousand.

The French Office for Immigration and Integration (OFII) stated Monday that French authorities had rescued over a thousand migrants shipwrecked in the English Channel stating, “The number of people shipwrecked off Calais and sheltered was 1,002 in 2021,” compared to 341 in 2020, an increase of 194%.”

The surge of rescues comes after the English Channel migrant route saw a record number of 28,000 migrants successfully crossing from France to the southern English coast to reach the United Kingdom.

According to a report from the broadcaster 20 Minutes, the number of migrants living in makeshift camps along the French northern coast and were referred to France’s national reception system has also increased by 239 per cent from 9,172 in 2020 to 31,103 in 2021.

An ancient story tells of the kamikaze, or "divine wind," that twice saved Japan from Kublai Khan's Mongol fleets. So powerful was the legend that centuries later thousands of World War II pilots known as kamikazes would sign up to protect Japan again, by crashing their planes in suicide missions.

Now University of Massachusetts Amherst geologist Jon Woodruff says he has uncovered evidence of some truth to the legend of the ancient kamikazes, typhoon-strength winds that saved Japan from Kublai Khan in the 13th century.

Woodruff traveled halfway around the world to find evidence of the winds in Japanese lake beds, near the site of shipwrecks thought to be part of Kublai Khan's sunken armada.

"This is one of the earliest historical examples of atmospheric and oceanic conditions having a significant geopolitical impact," says Woodruff. Not until the 20th century would Japan have to defend its borders from a foreign power again.

In the 13th century, Genghis Khan's grandson Kublai Khan had already conquered much of China and hoped to expand his Mongolian empire. To attack Kyushu, the southernmost of the four main Japanese islands, he amassed an enormous fleet of Chinese and Korean ships. It was one of the largest armadas the world has ever seen, with more than 140,000 sailors, according to Woodruff.

Yet twice, in 1274 and 1281, Kublai sent his overwhelming forces across the Korea Strait, and twice his fleet was destroyed.

"We have fairly strong evidence of two intense inundations at the end of the 13th century," says Woodruff.

Sediments buried beneath lakes give geologists a record of past weather, because they often contain materials washed in by storms. Some of the old layers Woodruff's team hauled up from beneath Lake Daija, near the coast of Kyushu, contained unusually large amounts of rock made from other ground-up rocks—called clastics—and the metal strontium. The most likely source of these materials would be massive amounts of sand and pulverized shells washed in from the beach by typhoons.
