Jewish organized crime made jazz noteworthy – but left Black musicians flat

In his new book ‘Dangerous Rhythms,’ author TJ English exposes a dark underside of the music industry, showing how mob-adjacent Jews fought segregation while exploiting the talent

By RICH TENORIO
29 November 2022, 1:38 am

(...) There were pluses for jazz musicians performing at mobbed-up clubs, according to English. The lawless owners were surprisingly effective at protecting Black talent against the racial violence of the era. Illegal profits, including during Prohibition, paid for the expanding size of jazz orchestras and meant that the musicians did not need to turn a profit.
(...)
The Jewish part of the narrative is depicted through figures such as Joe Glaser, Armstrong’s longtime manager. English describes their relationship as a key part of the book.

An Ashkenazi Jew with family roots in the Pale of Settlement, Glaser became Armstrong’s advocate after meeting him in Chicago, where Glaser ran the Sunset Club in quiet partnership with Al Capone. When Glaser touted Armstrong as “The World’s Greatest Trumpeter” on the marquee, Capone sent an order to take it down through a henchman — which was refused. Yet Glaser was also indicted twice for statutory rape in the late 1920s, and many of the jazz talents he worked with, including Armstrong and Mary Lou Williams, came to regret their association with him.
(...)
Jewish mobsters connected to jazz included some of the most legendary names in organized crime, from Arnold Rothstein to Meyer Lansky.

Rothstein is “kind of a legendary figure in the history of jazz,” English said. “What I always find amazing about Rothstein is, he was somewhat of a middle-class kid, not a criminal type, who was never arrested or prosecuted for any crime.”

Yet he made a fortune in illegal booze and gambling during Prohibition, an era that was “truly when jazz and the underworld could almost be one and the same,” English said, calling it “the pinnacle of the relationship.”

Rothstein used his illicit funds to finance not only jazz, but Broadway shows. Due to his untimely death in a 1928 shooting, he did not live to see the fulfillment of his last production — “Hot Chocolates,” an all-Black show featuring the music of Fats Waller, with Armstrong performing the song “Ain’t Misbehavin.’” Yet Rothstein left an impression on Lansky that lasted long after the end of Prohibition in 1933.

“I think Meyer Lansky learned a lot from the example of Rothstein,” English said. “Always present yourself as a legitimate businessman, don’t become involved in the violence of the business.”

Decades later, Lansky became a pivotal figure as the Mob pursued an ambitious international venture, running casinos in pre-Castro Cuba. His involvement in this venture is also chronicled in a previous English-penned book, “Havana Nocturne.” One of its chapters is titled “El Judio Maravilloso,” Lansky’s Spanish nickname in Cuba, which translates to “The Marvelous Jew.”

The links between African-American and Jewish music

May 17, 2019
By Ruth Schweitzer and Kathryn Kates

The stage show Knishes ’n Grits explores the connection between black and Jewish music through the songs of composers like George Gershwin, Harold Arlen and Irving Berlin, as well as the music of singers such as Sophie Tucker, Ethel Waters and Lena Horne.

Written by two of its stars, Thom Allison and Micah Barnes, the show moves from the music of the days of slavery in the United States, through to hit songs from the 1960s.

“We learned a lot about Jewish and black culture and the way they have come together, but without a doubt there’s been a lot of eye-opening moments for us in the writing of the show,” Barnes said. “It’s been a challenge trying to decide what is the most important moment that we can tell from each era.”
(...)
Musically, African-Americans and Jews, both outsiders in American society, joined forces at the Brill Building in New York in the late ’50s and ’60s. There, songwriters Jerome Lieber and Michael Stoller wrote hit songs for black vocal groups. “They were two hipster, beatnik Jewish guys who felt like outsiders,” Barnes said. “Because of that outsider status, they were able to write really effectively for black vocal groups like the Drifters.”

Kelsea Ballerini and CMT Music Awards Drag Queens Explain Message Behind Performance (Exclusive)

By Mona Khalifeh
Published: 8:11 PM PDT, April 2, 2023

The CMT Music Awards co-host made a powerful statement with her performance Sunday night.

Kelsea Ballerini made her feelings about the Tennessee drag ban known during her performance at the 2023 CMT Music Awards Sunday.

Ballerini, who also served as the night's co-host, transported the audience backyard barbecue in the '60s, where she was surrounded by a bevy of drag queens while belting out her hit, "If You Go Down (I'm Goin' Down Too)."

The group served as Ballerini's backup dancers, while the singer sang and strummed along on a pink guitar. After throwing her long, green coat to the side, Ballerini showed off a yellow two-piece, which she strutted her stuff in while the drag queens followed behind -- all dressed in their best '60s-inspired wears.

The performance ended with a flutter of confetti that was illuminated with rainbow stage lights, which made Ballerini's stance loud and clear.

After 2 Years of Silent COVID Compliance, Rage Against the Machine Returns

So much for “fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.”

CHRISTIAN BRITSCHGI | 8.4.2022 12:05 PM

After two years of pandemic protocols, precautions, and prohibitions, Rage Against the Machine finally took the stage in Washington, D.C., for a long-anticipated, much-delayed reunion tour to shout fuck you, I won't do what you tell me.

At back-to-back concerts in a packed Capital One Arena, rock's most radical band reinforced just how enduring its musical appeal is while adding a layer of awkward irony to the ideological project that runs through its lyrics.

Filling up a 20,000-person arena in a city where COVID fears still have people wearing masks outside is no mean feat—particularly when the cheapest tickets cost just under $200. It's doubly impressive for a band that hasn't released a full-length album of original material this century.

Rage's Tuesday night show provided ample evidence for why people turned out. It was a tight, energetic performance one might have expected of a band half its age. The lack of new material didn't matter much to an audience eager to rap along to well-worn classics like "Take the Power Back," "Know Your Enemy," and "Testify."

But if its music and performance have managed to stay fresh, Rage's message can't help but feel rather stale and ordinary, given how politics has shaken out since its heyday—and particularly over the past couple years that its reunion tour has been delayed.

The lyrical themes of Rage Against the Machine are a whirlwind of historical references and contemporary 1990s polemics—a merger of old-school hippie paranoia about the security state ("Hoover, he was a body remover") with fresher attacks on an American-led post–Cold War order ("NAFTA comin' with tha new disaster").

Tying it all together is a rejection of "the system" itself as racist, exploitative, and inherently oppressive ("some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses"). Its broadsides against the FBI and U.S. foreign policy will easily resonate with libertarians. The attacks against consumerism and free trade won't.

Viewed in the context of the decade in which the band was made, there was something refreshingly fun and nonpartisan about these attacks on a "machine" whose oppressive nature didn't change all that much from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton.

But keeping this all fresh and distinctive has been a challenge. That's partly because many of Rage's once radical ideas have become basically mainstream.

Attacking globalization was a little bolder in the 1990s when Democrats and Republicans were largely supported it. Rage guitarist Tom Morello's headlining of the 2016 "Rock against the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership)" tour was less courageous when one considers that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both also came out against that modest free trade agreement.

Similarly, the band provoked cheers when it flashed an "abort the Supreme Court" text on a massive screen at Tuesday's D.C. show. One likely could have gotten the same message by turning on MSNBC.

The fading distinctiveness of Rage's brand of politics is less disappointing than the band's failure to apply its message of radical nonconformity to the issue of the past two years.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been one long series of the machine telling people what to do, from staying inside and social distancing, to wearing masks, to getting vaccinated. Rage Against the Machine has been conspicuously silent about all that.

I'm not aware of any band members going so far as to endorse lockdowns or other pandemic measures. Morello seemed to criticize mandates in 2020 when responding on Twitter to the hilarious rumor that the band would help President Joe Biden promote mask wearing and social distancing. But he was also incredibly dismissive of the idea that anyone would do anything but listen to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and isolate themselves.

It's possible for radical leftists to think COVID-19 restrictions were a prudent, effective means of controlling a deadly virus. Perhaps the system got that one right. But if it can be trusted to largely call pandemic policy correctly, what's left of the radical critique that the machine's very existence is intolerable exploitation? If we can trust the man to implement a stay-at-home order, do we really need the revolution?

(JTA) — Seven-time Grammy Award winner Alanis Morissette explores her family’s Jewish past, which she said was kept a secret from her for most of her life, on Tuesday night’s season premiere of the PBS celebrity genealogy series “Finding Your Roots.”

“I think I found out that I was Jewish in my late 20s. I didn’t know,” Morissette tells host and Harvard University history professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. in the episode, a snippet of which was shared exclusively with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Morissette, 49, was raised Catholic and is now a practicing Buddhist. But her mother, Georgia Mary Ann Feuerstein, was born in Hungary to two Holocaust survivor parents, Imre Feuerstein and Nadinia Anna Lauscher/Gulyas.

Jewish frontman of heavy metal band Disturbed raises $29K for private security for Matisyahu after pro-Palestinian protests

The GoFundMe has already surpassed its goal of $25,000

(JTA) — David Draiman, the Jewish frontman of heavy metal band Disturbed, is raising money to provide private security for Matisyahu after the Jewish reggae singer had two venues cancel on him in the face of pro-Palestinian protests.

“I’m raising funds to provide security for our brother @matisyahu,” Draiman, the heavy metal singer, wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Him and his family have been relentlessly harassed during his current tour. Let’s help give him some security and safety in this difficult time.”

The fundraiser, launched on Thursday, Feb. 22, had already raised more than $29,000 by the following Monday, surpassing its $25,000 goal. On the GoFundMe page, Draiman wrote that his management team reached out to Matisyahu upon learning of the cancellation of his shows in Arizona and New Mexico earlier this month. Both venues where he was slated to perform canceled after they were targeted by pro-Palestinian protesters.
(...)
Matisyahu, like Draiman, is an outspoken pro-Israel activist on social media and elsewhere. Both have been particularly vocal supporters of Israel since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on the country and the ensuing war in Gaza.

“After Oct. 7, it’s not religious per se, but there is this strange pull back to being Jewish and feeling Jewish, of wanting to be connected to other Jews and Israel and speaking out about what’s happening and writing songs about it,” Matisyahu told the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles in early February.

Best known for his 2008 peace anthem “One Day,” Matisyahu has faced backlash for his Israel activism before. He was temporarily ousted from a Spanish music festival after refusing to publicly back the establishment of a Palestinian state. Matisyahu was re-invited to the festival, and festival organizers apologized for the incident.

He performed “One Day” at the massive pro-Israel rally in Washington, D.C. in November.

More killings as Israel targets children’s hospital in Gaza

Israel has targeted a children’s hospital in Gaza as the regime’s brutal aggression on the besieged strip has entered its 31st day.

Palestinian sources said the Israeli army hit Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital in the early hours of Monday, leaving an unspecified number of people killed and injured.

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have repeatedly targeted hospitals, residential buildings, mosques, and churches. Under the Geneva Convention, attacks on hospitals are strictly prohibited.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas urged the United Nations secretary-general to form an international committee to visit hospitals in the besieged strip to counter Israel’s “false” claims that they are used as launch pads for anti-Israel operations.

Hamas noted in a statement that the claims are aimed to “justify” Israel’s attacks on hospitals in Gaza.

According to the statement, the Israeli army targeted more than 100 hospitals and medical centers since the start of the aggression which rendered 16 hospitals out of service.

On October 17, hundreds of civilians were killed and injured by Israeli airstrikes on al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City. The attack has been condemned as an act of genocide by many governments around the world.

Palestinians dying of hunger as world watches in silence: Gaza official

The world is watching in silence as the Palestinians are dying of hunger in light of Israel’s savage campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip, says the civil defense spokesperson in Gaza.

Mahmoud Basal said on Friday the Palestinian people were dying every day “under the light of a suspicious Arab and international silence.”

“The suffering of citizens in Gaza and the north is worsening daily, as thousands of them are waiting to die either due to hunger or Israeli targeting.”

He said more than 700,000 people are facing starvation and death every moment if Israel continues to prevent the entry of basic food and medical supplies.

“The Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is entering its 140th day without anyone with a conscience acting to save the remaining lives in Gaza.”

What Do Israelis Think About Americans? Start With Disdain.

By Naomi Zeveloff
March 8, 2015

Though Israel is a famously fractious society, Israelis tend to agree on one thing: Their strongest supporters are an inherently dupable people.

“Most Israelis think Americans are pro-Israel and we can sell them anything, especially mud from the Dead Sea,” said David Lifshitz, the lead writer for the Israeli comedy show “Eretz Nehederet,” or “Wonderful Land.”

But it’s not just American tourists whom many Israelis see as guileless. American foreign policy is held up to similar scrutiny here, even as Israel receives billions of dollars in foreign aid from the United States each year.

“Americans are perceived to be naive, especially when it comes to the Middle East,” said Uri Dromi, who served as a spokesman for the Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres governments. “It is a bad neighborhood and it seems like they just don’t realize it.”

The naivete Israelis perceive in Americans is not just something they believe only Israel’s adversaries exploit; Israelis believe they can do so, too — and do. In a secretly recorded video of a 2001 discussion with a group of terror victims in the Ofra settlement in the Israeli occupied West Bank, now-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid out this widely held perception.

“I know what America is,” Netanyahu, told the settlers. “America is a thing that can be easily moved, moved in the right direction.”

For the 3rd time, Matisyahu concert canceled amid threat of pro-Palestinian protests

BY JACKIE HAJDENBERG MARCH 8, 2024 3:44 PM

(JTA) — A third Matisyahu concert has been canceled in response to the threat of pro-Palestinian protests, the American Jewish reggae musician shared on his Instagram Friday afternoon.

The show had been scheduled for Friday night at House of Blues Chicago.

“While my fans and I are deeply hurt by this, please know we will not cower to these bullies and the pressure they exert,” Matisyahu wrote.

The cancellation comes three weeks after the artist had concerts canceled in Tucson, Arizona, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Both venues for those shows cited staffing shortages and safety concerns after having been targeted by protesters, who said Matisyahu’s history of performing for Israeli soldiers and pro-Israel groups in the United States should disqualify him from performing. Matisyahu is known for his peace anthem “One Day,” which he performed at the massive pro-Israel rally in Washington, D.C. in November.
