Default First up - Latalvis Cobbins (August 17)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The jury hearing the first murder trial in connection with the carjacking, kidnapping and killing of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom will not hear at least one recorded phone conversation between defendant Latalvis Cobbins and relatives, but others will be allowed at trial, Judge Richard Baumgartner ruled Monday.

The taped phone conversations reportedly contain comments, made by Cobbins, about DNA and other evidence in the case, as well as discussion of Cobbins being a gang member.

Judge Baumgartner ruled Monday that one of the phone call recording will not be allowed in court, and he decided to reserve judgment on two others. The rest will be allowed at trial.

Jury selection in Cobbins' case is set to begin Wednesday in Nashville. The trial is slated to start Monday, Aug. 17 in Knox County.

Cobbins jury selection begins Wednesday; sling explained
WBIR.com Updated: 8/11/2009 5:22:26 PM

Two years of legal wrangling come to a head on Wednesday, as jury selection for Letalvis Cobbins' murder trial begins in Nashville.

The process up to this point has seen several court-ordered delays, arguments over evidence, and pleas for speedy trials.

Once a jury is seated, members will be brought to Knoxville for the duration of the trial, where they will be sequestered.

Cobbins is the first of four defendants to go to trial for the carjacking, torture, and murder of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom in January 2007.

Ten News reporter Yvette Martinez will be covering jury selection from Nashville and will have updates throughout the day on wbir.com.

The sling

Video shot Monday of Letalvis Cobbins showed him wearing a sling. Tuesday, an explanation for that sling was made public.

According to a report filed by the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Cobbins complained of arm pain following an incident on Friiday.

While Cobbins was being transported to a motions hearing, the officer driving the transportation van had to hit the brakes suddenly, due to traffic conditions, according to the report. Cobbins complained of pain in his right arm and said it felt broken.

The officer called ahead, and medical staff at the detention facility were on standby for their arrival.

Officers wrote in the report that Cobbins carried on normal conversation with co-defendant Lemaricus Davidson, who was also in the transportation van. Officer Kenneth Allen wrote that Cobbins was laughing and singing with Davidson, who was on the other side of the van.

After a nurse evaluated Cobbins, an X-ray was ordered. Cobbins has since been seen in court with the sling.
