Default "Anti-Semitism" on the rise in Sweden

Published: 9 Feb 09 17:51 CET

An ugly wave of anti-Semitism is on the rise in Sweden, and politicians who compare Israel with Nazi Germany or apartheid-era South Africa cannot claim to be free of responsibility, writes David Stavrou, a freelance Israeli journalist based in Sweden.

Sweden, like most countries in the western world, is obsessed with the Middle-East. The Arab-Israeli conflict receives constant media coverage and public interest, and the recent events in Gaza were no exception. As usual, they sparked a lively and sometimes violent debate. Sadly, and this too is usual, the debate is full of misinformation and misunderstandings.

Most Swedish political figures positioned themselves between strongly condemning Israel while mildly criticizing Hamas' actions on the one hand and totally supporting Hamas and its administration in Gaza on the other.

On the left many condemned Israel's military operation and the Jewish state in general. "I don’t think Israel is a democracy worthy of the name. It’s a racist apartheid state,” said the Left Party's Hans Linde, calling for a boycott of Israel.

On the right, Carl Bildt, Sweden's foreign minister who visited Gaza last week, blamed Israel for intentionally targeting economic infrastructure and called Israeli policies "neither morally nor politically defensible". These remarks were part of a wider debate which included demonstrations, calls for boycotts and anti-Israel diplomacy.

A leading Social-Democrat, Urban Ahlin, Deputy Chair of the Committee of Foreign Affairs, implored the government to encourage the EU to suspend its cooperation agreement with Israel, while perhaps the most amazing remark was made by another Social-Democrat. “Israel is an apartheid state. I think Gaza is comparable to the Warsaw ghetto,” said Ingalill Bjartén, the vice-chair of one of the Social Democratic women's organizations.

This is all very well and is part of living in a democracy but when one mentions the Holocaust and the latest round of violence in the Middle East in the same breath - a ridiculous and manipulative comparison - one should try to remain true to the facts. These are important since the victims of the conflict in Gaza and southern Israel, Jews and Arabs alike, deserve the truth. Deceitful and over-simplified versions, like those listed above, are an insult to those who live through the reality of the region, and are part of the reason the tragedy goes on.

Here are a few inconvenient truths that Swedish politicians, on the left and right, choose to forget:

There is no Israeli occupation in Gaza. Israel withdrew all its troops and settlements years ago and did not blockade Gaza when its forces withdrew. In fact - and this may come as a surprise to those who don't bother with facts before they make their moral judgments - Israel signed an agreement with the Palestinian Authority concerning security arrangements and safe passage of people and goods between Israel and Gaza. The agreement was breached by Hamas, purposely ignoring the best interest of the Palestinians themselves, when they took control of Gaza in 2007 and declared that all agreements and cease-fires with Israel were cancelled and that Israel must be destroyed.

Hamas then launched numerous rocket attacks against Israeli citizens (who, for some reason, don't attract much attention from Swedish moral experts) and massacred hundreds of members of the rival Palestinian fraction, Fatah, among them those who were responsible for the safety of the borders with Israel (yes, that’s right, their own people). Two additional facts are interesting to point out here: first, even when Israel finally had to close its border with Gaza because of the violent nature of the new Palestinian regime it still allowed the passage of humanitarian help, fuel, electricity and money.

Second, Egypt too had to close its border with Gaza, which shows that this is not really an Israeli-Arab conflict, but rather a struggle against gangsters and thugs. Egypt, of course, drew absolutely no Swedish criticism though it is blockading Gaza just as much as Israel is. In Swedish terms you could imagine the following scenario: Norway is taken over by a gang of crazed fascists who regularly launch rocket attacks on Karlstad, kidnap Swedish nationals and threaten to annihilate all Swedes in a holy war. Obviously, in a case like this most Swedes would support a strong reaction and certain adjustments in Swedish border and foreign policies. Well, this is exactly what happened in Israel and Israel waited eight years before finally attacking the Hamas power basis in Gaza.

But this is only the tip of the iceberg. During the latest conflict Hamas intentionally fired rockets from schools and mosques in order to provoke a counter-attack. You would expect Hamas's rather unlikely Swedish supporters (oddly enough, usually left-wingers supporting ultra nationalist religious fanatics), to be a little more critical of a leadership cynically sacrificing its own people, including women and children for political purposes.

Even the Arab press has had enough of this. "There are a million and a half desperate people", wrote a columnist in the leading Arab daily Al-Hayat, "they were wounded, their houses destroyed, their children were kidnapped to be human shields for those craving a confrontation with Israel. And there are those who sit in their comfortable chairs in Damascus and Beirut, boasting their divine victory which never existed and preventing a cease-fire". It is one thing that extremist Arab regimes silence voices like this. It's incomprehensible that Swedes should do the same.

In the broader context, Hamas began to implement Sharia Law over the population of Gaza. These laws include punishments such as executions, beatings and limb amputations, not to speak of the degradation of women, a total lack of respect for human rights and a complete disregard of human life. Not exactly the material of Socialist utopias.

Now Israel is often accused of aggression towards its Arab and Muslim neighbors but history, both recent and far, shows that it is the Arab regimes which oppress their own people and sometimes slaughter them in an orgy of death-worshipping fundamentalism. Yet, somehow Israel is always to blame. Israel, though far from perfect, didn't butcher almost two hundred thousands Muslims with knives and axes during the nineties, that was Algeria. Thousands of Palestinians were murdered during "Black September" by forces under the control of the king of Jordan, not by the Israelis.

The Israeli regime, while having its flaws, didn't slaughter, rape and burn thousands of Shia Muslims in Afghanistan. That was the Taliban. Israel is not responsible for the daily suicide bombs in Iraq that claim the lives of thousands of Muslims. Israel is not innocent, it has also committed acts of violence and aggression, but it is nothing compared to the barbaric and murderous regimes in Sudan, Syria and Saudi Arabia, which, like Hamas are all responsible for countless Muslim deaths and for millions of Muslims living in poverty and despair.

Swedes with a conscience may want to stop turning their head the other way when it concerns the homemade tragedies of the Muslim world. Was there a large demonstration in Sergels Torg when the Syrians, the Pakistanis or the Somalis initiated yet another of their bloodbaths? Are there any boycotts of products from the Gulf States which continue to persecute minorities, oppress women and mock basic concepts of freedom and Democracy? Of course not. It's all Israel's fault.

If only the Jews could stop provoking the Arab world, say Israel's critics, if only Israel would accept a peaceful solution. But they're wrong. The assumption that the Palestinian struggle is a reaction to Israeli policies, though it may sound reasonable, is simply wrong.

Any careful study will show that radical Islamism is not a reaction to Israel's so-called imperialism - it existed long before the state of Israel; Islamic racism and anti-Semitism are not a reaction to Israel's so-called aggression, they existed long before the Zionist movement even began and, for God's sake, movements like Hamas and Hizbullah aren't really interested in a Palestinian state. Their agenda is to kill Jews, and focusing on this agenda enables them to continue oppressing their own people.

The Palestinians themselves rejected numerous chances to establish an independent state and reach a solution to their tragic situation (some examples are the 1936 Peel Commission, the 1947 UN Partition plan and the 2000 Clinton proposal). Their leadership simply thrives on the conflict and they'll continue it at any cost.

But why are these facts ignored in Sweden? How can a leading Social Democrat compare Israel to the Nazis and still keep her seat. Is this ignorance or deceitfulness? Are they ill-informed or are they knowingly playing an active role in the propaganda machine of extremist elements from the Middle East? One can only speculate as to which of these is the case for Ms Bjartén and Mr Linde.

And it's not just a question of words. Mr Linde and Ms Bjartén cannot claim their words have nothing to do with the eggs and bottles thrown at pro-Israel demonstrators in Malmö at the end of January. They are partly responsible for the attacks on Israel's embassy in Stockholm, the Jewish centre in Helsingborg and the Jewish cemetery in Malmö. An ugly wave of anti-Semitism is on the rise in Sweden and they cannot claim to be free of responsibility.

A participant in a demonstration in Stockholm, a Swede converted to Islam who writes regularly in the Swedish press, wrote in his blog: "it felt good to burn Israel's flag and trample on the remains. It was uplifting to shout "Allahu akbar" [Allah is great] together with blond and blue eyed non-Muslim Swedes".

Do Mona Sahlin and Jan Eliasson, leaders of Sweden's biggest political party, really think that marching under Hezbollah and Hamas flags, as they did a couple of weeks ago, doesn't contribute to the legitimacy of these actions? Can they really consider themselves worthy heirs to the noble Social Democratic values of Humanism and Solidarity?

Back in Israel, many Israelis are not at all sure that the Israeli operation in Gaza was wise or justified. Many opposed it and demonstrated against it. They may be right. Israel is a democracy and unlike the Palestinians in Gaza they are entitled to express their opinion without being tortured or executed. The obvious conclusion after almost every round of violence in the Middle-East is that the conflict isn't between Jews and Arabs, it's between progressive peace-seekers and warmongers within the various countries.

At the end of the day, the Palestinians have suffered the most from the recent conflict. Sadly, their own leadership is responsible. Most Palestinians, and especially the children and the families who have lost everything, are innocent victims. For their sake the historical lesson must be clear. Freedom and Democracy must be defended at any cost. Racists, fascists and promoters of oppression and genocide must be opposed.

Hamas is all of these things just like the Lebanese Hezbollah, despite the support they attract from the bizarre Swedish so-called left. Swedes, as lovers of peace and freedom, would be wise to encourage those who fight these forces of evil thousands of miles away or they might find them in their back yard. If they're not there already.

...The number of suicide attempts by young people in Sweden has risen dramatically, the agency reports, and more and more youths are being admitted to hospitals for treatment of depression and anxiety.

Violence is also an increasing problem in Swedish society, the agency reports, with roughly one in ten residents having been subject to some sort of violence, threat, or harassment in 2006...

Fascism and racism in Denmark and Sweden
RebelMouse - 12.04.2009 18:21

Well, before 2 days I was discriminated again, so I decided to spread information about institutional racism and fascism in Scandinavia. Discrimination became so wide in society that you should always ask Danish for his/her opinion about East Europeans in Denmark before you gives them place for sleeping or anything in your country.

Danish don’t discriminate people from old EU countries or USA but they discriminate people from East Europe. In Sweden they discriminate all foreigners who came to ask for job or who are without papers. Common for Danish and Swedish is also that they kiss in ass authorities, like German’s in the time of Hitler. They will do everything to help to authorities to control foreigners. Therefore, it would be nice, that they experience the same abroad what they do to foreigners in their country: always use chance to ask them about their opinion about foreigners in their country. But let’s write about concretely examples of discrimination…
Newest case was before 2 days, I visited after 3 months an organization for homeless and social cases in Copenhagen, it is called Fundamentet, woman chef told me that I can’t come there anymore under excuse that authorities will cut money for them if they accept foreigners so only people who can ask for social help can come there. It is daily place, it is not for sleeping, but it is first time to see that they limit people in daily places, until now they limited “only” places for sleeping. In Denmark, they created whole beaurocratic rules about social help, so people must have so called “CPR number” in order to apply for social help or to ask for job. In that way they excluded East Europeans (Polish, Romanians, etc) from social system even by theory they should be equal with other EU citizens. Old EU countries still think like Hitler, they think they are more worth than East Europeans; they included Eastern in EU but just in order to make possibility for businessmen to exploit new markets. Ordinary people have nothing from uniting of Europe. Plus financial crisis come, so very possible discrimination will become bigger and bigger and in that way conflicts (and fascist repression) in societies will become bigger.
Before one month I was discriminated in one more place also. I visited place called Lerkehoj (Lindevangs Alle 9), to sleep there. Fascist worker first tried to make lottery with hope that I will not get place for sleeping, but I got ticket for sleeping. Then fascist worker told me that I can’t come there anymore to sleep under excuse that I am not junkie. Of course I found on internet their application for money from some organization and from social ministry and there is written that people can come anonymous and that organization helps to the homeless plus to the people with alcohol/drug problems. So, real reason for refusing was that I am from East Europe and of course I know people who sleeps there, so an American man, an Irish woman, and Swedish are not refused even they don’t use alcohol and they are not junkies, they are just homeless, the same like me. As we see, if workers respect rules of organization, they don’t have right to ask us from which country we are, but their chef is connected with social ministry and social minister (Karen Jespersen) wrote book against foreigners. She had to change political party because of her statements against foreigners. Now she is social minister and she realize her fascism in social places. Therefore of course, who makes complaint he will never succeed to change anything, it is pyramidal/hierarchical/institutional discrimination. But therefore people must take justice in their own hands, and as we saw, crowd of foreigners burned 2 times everything in Denmark.
Before 10 days, I was eating breakfast in basement of one church (Blaagaardskirkens) and social worker there said to Romanians (when they asked to buy newspapers for homeless, they sell it in the city): You are Romanians, we don’t want you here, go back to your country. After several days I heard someone broke church and stole newspapers (hahaha). It is small rebellion, but I like when people act in harmony with their human dignity. Those Romanians are good, of course there are and those who are bad: bad Romanians help to Danish fascist secret agency to spy foreigners.
Daily place for homeless, for breakfast, called Fedtekaelderen (street: Overgaden Oven Vandet 6a) help to authorities to spy foreigners and they organize meeting between homeless and riches in order to convince homeless that they should not steal from shops/stores under excuse that riches give us food. This is good example of mentality of social workers, they brain is washed and they have even paper on window: “this is place for good homeless, not for thieves”. I can compare it with control described in film Matrix, although author of film decided to make science fiction from it but if we exclude decision of author to kiss in ass authority, film describe very good present society. Sweden is for example society where is everything under control of government, like in dictatorship, they know even where are hidden refugees (asylum seekers) because even people, who should help to hidden persons (priest especially), cooperate with authorities. Of course, workers in Fedtekaelderen help to authorities to spy foreigners, they don’t spy domestic people then they just try to convince domestic to stop to steal from rich bastards.
Sundholm is also place for homeless and social cases where is not allowed to foreigners to sleep, even during the day some of workers don’t let people from Poland to sit there. The same case, by the rule of organization, people have right to come anonymously.
Hillerodgade 62-64 is also place where they started to forbid to East Europeans to sleep there but their chef get 20 million Euro per year from budget on the basis that people are on the streets. They have places in more cities in Denmark, but if there come only Danish, in Hillerodgade sleep only 10 persons (Hillerodgade can accept 50 people).
During this winter, I saw also fascist behaviour in place called Kolde Naese (Horhusvej 4 or 5). There came many times only 3 Danish, the rest are foreigners. They have 20 places, and fascist worker accepted 3 Danish, 6 foreigners and the rest he refused. So, many nights half beds stayed empty and people could not get place to sleep, just because they are Romanians. I think Kolde Naese and Fundamentet belong to Salvation Army or they get finance from them. Now you can see how Salvation Army gets money from budget “on the basis that they help to the people” but in reality they have fascist behaviour when they decide who can get help. They get and private donations. So, I can conclude that places for homeless are in fact business, they make money from our life on the street, plus they keep us on the street after they got money for whole year. They do with people whatever they want, there is no control for social workers and who could control them when ministry is fascist. Therefore, before or later, homeless must make revenge, I say revenge because homeless are not in position to take things in their hands without spaces. Even if they occupy space, they are not organized for self-finding of food. And many domestic homeless are patriots so they will never support foreigners in trying to occupy place. Domestic see us like competition and they don’t like us.

Sweden

In Gothenburg, Newspaper library don’t let foreigners to use internet if we don’t have EU passport or some kind of their insurance, the same case is with Royal library in Stockholm. Only EU citizens can use these libraries. They don’t accept paper issued by migration office for asylum seekers. Amnesty International from Gothenburg work for authorities and they don’t want to do anything when they hear for cases of discrimination (they come in place where people ask for asylum, but they just ask you the same question like authorities (how you came here, directly or you stayed somewhere, etc). They just told me: it is so; expecting from me to accept discrimination. No one is illegal from Gothenburg is fake although it is hard to explain. They convince people to go to ask for asylum instead to help them to stay illegal, they send you to some priest who will again convince you to ask for asylum and he refused me to give me place even I had 3 months pneumonia and outside was snow. So, I can say, one day, this priest and fucking fake activists will finish bad. I could die, they didn’t give a shit. People from my country, who got place from priest, told me that there is place but it is will of priest if he wants to give me place. Swedish mentality is: we believe that our authorities are good and we believe that all people must be registered in system. When such pigs become activists, you can imagine their activism. They are totally good for fascist authorities and they are under control like in Matrix. Therefore Swedish politicians always speak how they don’t need security (body guards) like politicians need in other countries. They succeeded to control society like dictators. I forgot to mention, even when I asked for medical help this fucking church, they set me the same questions like authorities (whom I have from family in my country, how I came there, etc). So, Swedish authorities know very well where hidden refused asylum seekers are, and it is just will of authorities how long they will get place to stay hidden. Usually those who start to work against other people from their country (people who starts to spy), they get permission to stay in Sweden. As I said, everything is under control; it is not my blabla it is really like in dictatorship. I see Swedish like I see German’s in the time of Hitler.
In Gothenburg, there is fascist Urgent Centre (like hospital: Sodra Allegatan 6) where they didn’t let me to visit doctor because I didn’t have EU passport. They didn’t accept my paper issued by migration office and they asked me to pay 110 Euro to get possibility to visit doctor.
Place for homeless in Gothenburg, Gjutjarnsgatan 3, is also fascist place (belong to Stadsmission). Workers let you to stay 2-3 days if you are foreigner, after it they don’t let you anymore. In that way they try to push out foreigners from their country. Anywhere if you ask for sleeping, they send you to social worker who gathers info from you about you, but you are refused for sleeping. In that way, again, you are registered but there is no help for you.
Stadsmission place in Stockholm (Maria Prastgardsgata 32) even called cops to control all foreigners. I just go out from shower and I saw cops gather Romanians, I moved myself back and through window I saw several cops check all Romanians (passports and fingerprints). Of course, cops didn’t check Swedish junkies who watched from beside. It was clear case of fascism, organized by social workers and cops.
I read also one time news that one asylum seeker died in Sweden because he didn’t get help from doctors even he visited doctors.

As you see, I can conclude that Hitler died but his idea survived and became ruling idea in whole EU. Foreigners can really die from stupid sickness and there is no help for us. We are beside you, but we are living in different dimension. You are exploited but we are persecuted and our life is in constant danger. Even if you can help, I am suspicious that you will help like we need; you would rather help like you want, in harmony with your beliefs. Therefore I don’t ask you for help anymore, I just want to spread information about discrimination. When I get possibility, we will see what will be happen to fascists and spies. Even after many years; I will never forget them.

Default Sweden criticized for lack of effort on minority languagesPublished: 7 May 09 08:08 C

Published: 7 May 09 08:08 CET

Sweden has been taken to task by the Council of Europe for a lack of progress in raising social awareness about and promoting educational programs in the country’s five national minority languages.

Nine years ago, Sweden signed on to the Council’s Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the Charter for Regional and Minority Languages.

Since then, Jews, Roma, Sami, Swedish Finns and residents of the Torne Valley (Tornedalers) were granted status as national minorities.

In addition, Finnish, all Sami dialects, Torne Valley Finnish (meänkieli), Romani, and Yiddish are recognized as national minority languages in Sweden.

According to the Council of Europe charter, Sweden is thus obliged to ensure proper instruction in the languages, as well as the ability for those who speak the language to participation in society.

For nearly a decade, the Council, Sweden’s National Schools Administration (Skolverket), and the Obmudsman against ethnic discrimination (DO) have criticized Sweden’s adoption of the convention’s and charter’s requirements.

Now an expert group from the Council of Europe has issued a new report pointing out remaining shortcomings in Sweden’s treatment of minority languages.

In the report, Sweden is “strongly” encouraged to find “innovative solutions” to train more instructors to each Romani.

In addition, there ought to be more instruction in Yiddish, especially in Malmö, Gothenburg, and Stockholm, according to the report.

The Council also wants to see more preschool-level instruction in Sami, Torne Valley Finnish, and Finnish, as well as a more highly developed teacher training programme for instructors in Sami and Torne Valley Finnish.

Public sector employees ought to also be encouraged to attain higher proficiency in Sami, and to use it on the job.

Sweden is also criticized for not having the country’s laws and important societal information translated into each of the minority languages.

Also important, according to the Council, is an increased effort on the part of Swedish authorities to ensure that Sami and Torne Valley Finnish newspapers are established.

Of course, all the inferior languages that have slipped into Sweden ...

Many thanks for these interesting videos. It seems as the WN-movement in Sweden is beginning to grow up. At last.

Women are playing an increasingly active role on the Swedish neo-Nazi scene, a new book has revealed.

Authors Maria Blomquist and Lisa Bjurwald found that the notion of women as passive neo-Nazi group members, simply following their boyfriends into the movement, was largely a myth.

“Women are active in everything from distributing propaganda material, writing articles and takng part in white power concerts, to releasing their own collections of poetry, standing for election and speaking at public demonstrations,” Maria Blomquist told The Local.

http://www.thelocal.se/19602/

The book, Good dag kampsyster (’Good day, sister in arms’), also looks at the growing numbers of women signing up to the burgeoning right wing extremist movement in Sweden.

Swedish White Power Girls

“At the neo-Nazis’ national day march last June we counted 200 women, making up some 20 to 25 percent of the total participants,” said Blomquist, adding that women often find their way into neo-Nazi circles in much the same way as their male counterparts.

“They get involved via the internet, by attending concerts or following the lead of a famly member, to name just some examples.”

Blomquist and Bjurwald’s book tracks the development of 111 members of the National Socialist Front (NSF) from 1997 to 2003. By analysing membership registers and cross-referencing them with public records, the authors examine the women’s lives at the time they joined the NSF, followed by a snapshot of the same women’s circumstances in 2008.

According to excerpts published in the Swedish magazine Expo, the median age of women who joined NSF was 19, with just a handful over the age of 30.

Expo is the publishing arm of the Expo Foundation, “a privately-owned research foundation founded in 1995 with the aim of studying and mapping anti-democratic, right-wing extremist and racist tendencies in society.”

On average NSF’s female members — the majority of whom lived in southern Sweden — remained members for a year and ten months. Few of the women had jobs, and though their circumstances had improved by 2008, their incomes and education levels were generally low.

A lot of the women had left the organization by autumn 2008 but there were some who had remained members for over 10 years.

The National Socialist Front (NSF) disbanded in November 2008 and re-launched itself as the Folkfronten (’People’s Front’) party.
