Apple denounces neo-Nazis as Spotify bans ‘white power’ tracks

Technology companies join together to condemn white supremacists and President Trump in aftermath Charlottesville rally

Samuel Gibbs Thursday 17 August 2017 12.16 BST Last modified on Thursday 17 August 2017 16.27 BST

Apple, LinkedIn, Spotify and Twitter have joined a growing chorus of technology companies to hit out at the far right and Donald Trump’s attempt to put white supremacists and leftwing counter-demonstrators at Saturday’s Charlottesville protest on the same moral plane.

Following the lead of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google, Go Daddy and others, Apple CEO Tim Cook pledged $1m donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and the Anti-Defamation League and sent a strongly worded memo to staff, quoting Martin Luther King, about the violence in Charlottesville on Saturday.

“We must not witness or permit such hate and bigotry in our country, and we must be unequivocal about it,” Cook wrote. “This is not about the left or the right, conservative or liberal. It is about human decency and morality.

“I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.”

Apple also pledged to match two-for-one employee donations to human rights groups until 30 September, and said it would roll out donation systems for the SPLC through its iTunes store.

Trump has faced a growing backlash over his defence of those who took part at the far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. On Wednesday the US president was forced to disband two White House business councils that were disintegrating around him in the wake of his remarks. The same day, former US presidents George HW Bush and George W Bush issued a joint statement condemning racial bigotry.

Amid the ongoing fallout from the violence that saw a civil rights activist killed, music subscription service Spotify began removing so-called white power music, flagged by the SPLC as racist “hate bands”.

A Spotify spokesperson said: “Illegal content or material that favours hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us. Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention.

“We are glad to have been alerted to this content – and have already removed many of the bands identified, while urgently reviewing the remainder.”

Social media revolt

Twitter has removed accounts affiliated with neo-Nazi site the Daily Stormer, which lost its domain registration earlier this week.

The company said in a statement that its policies prohibit violent threats, harassment and hateful conduct and that Twitter “will take action on accounts violating those policies”. The Daily Stormer accounts were being used to keep followers appraised of its various website moves, as it struggled to stay online, eventually retreating to the dark web to avoid action from tech companies and the Anonymous hacker collective.

Microsoft’s LinkedIn also suspended a page devoted to Daily Stormer and another page belonging to a man associated with the site, Andrew Auernheimer, but declined to comment.

Google’s YouTube also started terminating accounts linked to white supremacists, including that of Christopher Cantwell, a web commentator who has described himself as a white nationalist and said on his site that he had attended the Charlottesville rally. Facebook had also removed Cantwell’s accounts as part of its crackdown on neo-Nazism and hate speech.

The wave of crackdowns against white supremacists and neo-Nazis reflects a rapidly changing mindset among Silicon Valley firms on how far they are willing to go to police hate speech.

Technology companies have taken down violent propaganda from Islamic State and other militant groups, in part in response to government pressure. But most internet companies have traditionally tried to steer clear of making judgments about content except in cases of illegal activity.

Google’s app store has banned Gab — a social network popular with the far-right — for 'hate speech'

Rob Price 9 HOURS

Gab, a social network popular with the racist "alt-right" movement, has been banned from the Google Play app store for hate speech.

The move comes amid a sweeping attempts from the technology industry to crack down on far-right and racist content in the aftermath of deadly violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Launched in 2016, Gab styles itself as "an ad-free social network for creators who believe in free speech, individual liberty, and the free flow of information online."

It has proved popular with the far-right it is the only place where they can speak freely you fucking moron, and in page soliciting fundraising it says it sees " a unique opportunity to carve a niche in a massively underserved and unrepresented market ... conservative, libertarian, nationalist, and populist internet users from around the world."

On Wednesday, Gab posted a photo on Twitter of an email it says it received from Google informing the company its Android app had been banned from the Google Play Store.

"After review, Gab.ai.android has been suspended and removed from Google Play as a policy strike because it violates the hate speech policy," it said.

The policy specifies that Google does not "allow apps that advocate against groups of people based on their race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, nationality, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender identity."

On its Twitter account, Gab speculated the move was related to the fact it apparently offered a job to James Damore, the Google engineer fired for penning a controversial memo about diversity. "Really interesting that shortly after Gab offered [Damore] a job and supported him in the media that our app gets pulled from Google," Gab wrote.

Google said it couldn't comment on individual cases. But a spokesman said: "We will remove any apps that break our policies."

And despite being booted from the Play Store, the service has also just surpassed $1 million (£775 millon) in crowdfunding from more than 1,000 investors.

Gab is just the latest controversial service to be barred by a major tech firm this week.

Almost all of the big firms have taken steps to block services associated with the alt-right or far right, with Google, GoDaddy, and Cloudflare refusing services to the Daily Stormer neo-Nazi news site, PayPal refusing payment services to hate sites, and Facebook banning white nationalist user accounts.

Gab remains accessible via its website on desktop and on mobile devices. It is not available in Apple's App Store, Breitbart reported in 2016, after it was rejected because it contains "pornographic content."

Support Richard Spencer and NPI

RICHARD SPENCER August 18, 2017 247

Comrades,

We’ve officially gone dark.

Corporate America, in alliance with the far Left, has campaigned successfully to shut our web outlets down. The homepages of both Radix Journal and The National Policy Institute have been removed from the internet after a concerted effort by our enemies to get us kicked off our publishing platform, Squarespace.

In the minds of many outside observers, we are both down and out.

Neither is the case.

Since we stormed out of Lee Park on Saturday, ducking bottles and dodging bats, fists, and flying acid, the phones have not stopped ringing and the challenges and false media accusations continue to mount. We have never faced more pressure from so many different directions.

And yet, we know what this really means. We have broken through.

There is a very good reason our rights to assemble and speak freely have been so obviously, viciously subverted. It is because there is no other way for our enemies to respond to our presence and message. They know this and are reaching levels of desperation that should not even be possible.

Instead of discouraging us, these events and reactions have served as reminders of the rightness of our cause and inspired us to press every more boldly forward. As we speak, teams of able and dedicated volunteers are contemplating a comprehensive solution to our obstacles on the Internet, while I am preparing to proceed against the universities that have foolishly sought to prevent me from speaking on their campuses.

Our rights are protected only when we stand and fight for them. The Charlottesville rallying cry, “You Will Not Replace Us,” today gives way to a new declaration: “You Will Not Silence Us!”

I have been overwhelmed with calls, texts, and emails about the best ways to support The National Policy Institute in the fight that is now only beginning. While most of our online fundraising tools have been shut down or locked permanently, there is still the old-fashioned way—mail.

To support The National Policy Institute, send funds directly to our address:

The National Policy Institute
PO Box 320482
Alexandria, VA 22320

We are grateful for any help you can give. Your support has never been more appreciated.

The crisis we have long predicted and about which we have only theorized is now beginning. We are ready. Are you?

Sincerely,

Richard B. Spencer
President
The National Policy Institute

Charlottesville white nationalists outed on social media; 1 fired from job

Updated on August 14, 2017 at 1:23 PM Posted on August 14, 2017 at 1:21 PM

By Geoff Herbert [email protected],

Social media efforts to identify white nationalists at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, have led to at least one alt-right member to be fired from his job.

The New York Post reports Cole Wh*te was terminated from his position at a restaurant in Berkeley, California, on Sunday after being outed by a Twitter account titled "Yes, You're Racist." Tweets have shared photos of individual "Unite the Right" protesters who appeared in Charlottesville on Friday and Saturday, encouraging others to help name them.

"If you recognize any of the Nazis marching in #Charlottesville, send me their names/profiles and I'll make them famous," the account wrote to its 290,000 followers with the hashtag #GoodNightAltRight.

Top Dog, Cole's former place of employment, said he was fired as a direct result of his involvement with hate groups who marched in Charlottesville, holding tiki torches and raising their arms in Nazi salutes.

"We believe in individual freedom, and voluntary association for everyone," an official statement from Top Dog said.

Another white nationalist identified by "Yes You're Racist" is P*ter Cvjetanovi*, a 20-year-old student from Reno, Nevada. Cvjetanovi* confirmed he was at the rally Friday in Emancipation Park, but said he was surprised by the backlash.

"I did not expect the photo to be shared as much as it was," he told Channel 2 News in Nevada. "I understand the photo has a very negative connotation. But I hope that the people sharing the photo are willing to listen that I'm not the angry racist they see in that photo."

"Yes You're Racist" has also shared photos of James Alex Fields Jr., who has been charged with second-degree murder for allegedly plowing into a crowd, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others. Fields had been pictured earlier carrying the emblem of two crossed axes for Vanguard America, one of the hate groups that participated in the events.

Heyer, 32, was among hundreds of anti-racist protesters who faced off with alt-right groups, including white supremacists, neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members, on Saturday.

Social media efforts to name all the participants in Charlottesville have led to some cases of mistaken identity. One torch-bearing white nationalist wearing a University of Arkansas shirt was misidentified as an associate professor Kyle Quinn, who was at an event in Arkansas at the time.

"Whoever wore the shirt obviously does not represent my values, the values of the College of Engineering or the U of A," Quinn wrote on Twitter, condemning the "horrible events in Virginia."

University of Arkansas Chancellor Joe Steinmetz also blasted the event and in a tweet.

The UNR student was not expelled and allowed to keep his job at the university. In this case at least. Unfortunately the other guy was not. Our enemies will keep these attacks up until we start doing the same to them.

THE GREAT SHUTTENING

There is currently a full scale war being waged by the politico-corporate interests against the free speech and livelihood of any person or organization that attempts to speak truth in face of the mainstream anti-White narrative.

Never before has the entire system been so united in trying to stamp out an idea from the public mind. They fear what we have to say because the truth is on our side and thus they must resort to tyrannical measures in an effort to prevent our message from being heard.

If they thought this would stop us, they were wrong.
We will build our own platforms.
We will not be stopped.
We will not be silenced.

You mess with someone's job, you're asking for trouble.

"Yes, You're Racist" is run by Logan James Smith, 30, of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Let's dox the doxxer. Smith's address is listed as 5025 Simmons Branch Trail, Raleigh, NC 27606. His land line is listed as (865) 220-8825. (Publicly available information.)

Maybe a call to his employer (if any) should be made. "Do you know that you employ a nationally famous internet bully who runs people out of jobs based on defaming them for their beliefs? Is that the kind of publicity that you're in business to have?"

RICHARD SPENCER’S ‘WHITE SUPREMACIST’ WEBSITE ALTRIGHT.COM TAKEN OFFLINE

BY JASON MURDOCK ON 5/4/18 AT 5:21 AM

U.S. domain registrar GoDaddy has shut down AltRight.com, the website co-edited by white nationalist posterboy Richard Spencer, following a legal complaint accusing the site of “actively inciting violence” against racial and ethnic minorities.

The decision was made following a letter sent by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law on April 20, appealing for GoDaddy’s chief executive Scott Wagner to help purge the website over its policy-breaking content. The registrar’s rules say a website using its services cannot promote illegal activity or violence.

“By promoting illegal and violent acts in its articles, AltRight.com’s content has an impact beyond its published articles and encourages a downward spiral of violent and threatening posts in its comments section,” the lawyers’ letter read. In some cases, the filing said, it advocated for woman-beating and sexual assault.

One comment on the website stated: “These whores need round-the-clock beatings, spankings, pussy poundings, throat-fuckings and humiliation to be put in their place.” There were also numerous mentions of Jews and “faggots,” the lawyers said.

A January 2018 article referenced in the complaint allegedly encouraged the use of “live ammunition at the border” to create a “substantial chance that [immigrants crossing] lose their life in the process.” The letter concluded: “This type of language clearly violates the provisions of GoDaddy’s terms of service.”

In a statement given to Buzzfeed, GoDaddy said: “It is our determination that altright.com crossed the line and encouraged and promoted violence in a direct and threatening manner. As is our standard process when dealing with these incidents, we gave the customer 48 hours to transfer the domain elsewhere.”

Spencer, who is president of a Virginia-based white supremacist think tank, was a speaker at the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which sparked violent clashes and claimed the life of counter-protester Heather Heyer.

The so-called "alt-right" movement was seemingly emboldened by the rhetoric of Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential election campaign. Spencer, who once shouted “Hail Trump! Hail our people!” during a gathering in November 2016, is widely known for quoting Nazi propaganda and getting punched in the face. He is facing legal action and is now appealing for supporters’ loose change.

Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the non-profit Lawyers' Committee, tweeted on Thursday: “We will continue using every tool in our arsenal to confront white supremacists, the alt-right & those who incite violence and hate in our country. We applaud GoDaddy for heeding our call and pulling the site.”

Richard Spencer did not respond to a request for comment. On Twitter this week, he retweeted multiple accounts using the hashtag #BoycottGoDaddy. Currently, AltRight.com’s homepage is down. It says the “IP address could not be found.”

It is not the first time GoDaddy has acted to purge white supremacy outlets for breaking its policies. In August last year it outlawed The Daily Stormer, a controversial website known for promoting Nazi ideologies, often for shock value. Social network Twitter has also banned a slew of far-right activists and bloggers.
