It is often referred to as an island since the construction of the Kuybyshev Reservoir at Tolyatti downstream Volga in 1955, but it is in fact connected to the mainland by a road.

Since the 15th century, Sviyazhsk served as a center of an uyezd. In 1920–1927, it was a center of Sviyazhsky Kanton; in 1927–1931 - the administrative center of Sviyazhsky District. In 1932, it was demoted to rural status."

The Kul-Sharif Mosque [in Kazan]

Tatars are Muslims.

"Kazan (Russian: Каза́нь; Tatar: Qazan) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan. With a population of 1,143,535, it is the eighth most populous city in Russia. Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in European Russia."

"The Kul-Sharif Mosque located in Kazan Kremlin, was reputed to be – at the time of its construction – one of the largest mosques in Russia, and in Europe outside of Istanbul.
Originally, the mosque was built in the Kazan Kremlin in the 16th century. It was named after Kul-Sharif, who served there. Kul-Sharif died with his numerous students while defending Kazan from Russian forces in 1552. It is believed that the building featured minarets, both in the form of cupolas and tents. Its design was traditional for Volga Bulgaria, although elements of early Renaissance and Ottoman architecture could have been used as well. In 1552, during the storming of Kazan it was destroyed by Ivan The Terrible.
Since 1996 the mosque has been rebuilt in Kazan Kremlin, although its look is decisively modern. Its inauguration on July 24, 2005 marked the beginning of celebrations dedicated to the Millennium of Kazan. It can accommodate 6,000 worshipers.
The Kul-Sharif complex was envisioned to be an important cornerstone of Kazan's architectural landscape. Besides the main mosque building it includes a library, publishing house and Imam's office."

Suzdal Museum of Wooden Architecture

"Suzdal (Russian: Суздаль) is a town and the administrative center of Suzdalsky District in Vladimir Oblast, located on the Kamenka River, 26 kilometers (16 mi) north of the city of Vladimir, the administrative center of the oblast.

The history of the town dates back to at least the year 1024. For centuries it functioned as the capital of several Russian principalities. According to O.N. Trubachyov the name of the town comes from the old Slavic verb to create (съзьдати) which also means clay-built. It forms part of the Golden Ring.

After a decline in political importance, the town rose in prominence as a religious center with numerous monasteries and a remarkable ratio of churches to citizens: at one point, forty churches for four hundred families. Today, the town operates as an important tourist center, featuring many fine examples of old Russian architecture—most of them churches and monasteries. Walking through the town, one might get the feeling that every third building is a church. Although having over ten thousand residents, Suzdal still retains a rural look with streams and meadows everywhere and chicken and livestock a common sight on the streets, some of which remain unpaved. This juxtaposition of stunning medieval architecture with its pastoral setting lends Suzdal a picturesque charm and in the summer artists and easels are a common sight."

Elias Church

"Church of Elijah the Prophet on Ivanova mountain or Elias Church - church in Suzdal in the bend of the river Kamenka, located opposite the Suzdal Kremlin. Built in 1744.

Stone Elias Church was built in 1744 on the site of a wooden, moved to the west side tenements (by the entrance of Jerusalem, the Church) by order of Metropolitan Hilarion of Suzdal. The temple stands on the edge of Elias meadows, where before there was the episcopal settlement.

In the XVIII century near Elias Church was located and a small winter church - the church of St. John the Evangelist. In the first years of Soviet power Church of St. John the Evangelist, as well as the refectory and the bell tower of St Elias Church were destroyed.

The restoration project of the church was designed in the 1970s, but realize it was only at the beginning of the XXI century: the bell tower and the refectory have been fully restored in 2010.

Besstolpny one-domed Church of Elijah is an example of suburban temple of the first half of the XVIII century. Its main business scope is the octagon on the quadrangle and topped with bulbous head."

Suzdal Kremlin, Cathedral of the Nativity, and Archbishop's Chambers

"The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Suzdal Russia is a World Heritage Site. It is one of the eight White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal. One of the most complex monuments of Russian medieval architecture. It was originally constructed during the reign of Vladimir II Monomakh during the late 11th century.

The Cathedral of the Nativity is surrounded by a ring of earthen walls in an oxbow of Kamenka River. It is notable for being the first city cathedral not built for the exclusive use of the knyaz or his relatives. The cathedral contains the remains of a son of Yuri Dolgoruki, knyazes of the Shuisky family and others.

The cathedral was originally built during the reign of Vladimir II Monomakh in 1102. In 1222, on the orders of Yuri II of Vladimir the dilapidated building was taken down and replaced by a new one built of white stone. Thus it remained until 1528, when the white stone walls above the arcade are replaced by brick. In the 17th century, the previously three-domed cathedral was given five domes and the interior was partially repainted. Thus the cathedral survives to this day with numerous changes throughout its history, both in the exterior, and the interior, where the wall frescoes are of 13th-, 15th- and 17th-century origin. The cathedral has also endured fire several times."

Pokrovsky Monastery

"Pokrovsky nunnery is located on the right bank of the Kamenka in the northern part of Suzdal. Founded in 1364 by Prince Dmitry Konstantinovich, but the present form of the ensemble was formed only in the XVI century, when the monastery became a place of imprisonment vows as a nun representatives of aristocratic families. In XVI-XVII centuries, the monastery was one of the largest in Russia."

Church of the Intercession on the Nerl

"The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin on the Nerl River (Russian: Церковь Покрова на Нерли) is an Orthodox church and a symbol of medieval Russia.

The church is situated at the confluence of Nerl and Klyazma Rivers in Bogolyubovo, Suzdalsky District, Vladimir Oblast, 13 km north-east of the ancient capital of Vladimir.

The church was commissioned by Andrei Bogolyubsky. According to some sources, it was built to commemorate Andrei's victory over the Bulgars and his son Izyaslav, who was slain in the battle. The exact construction date of the church is unknown.

The monument is built in white stone, and has one dome and four columns in the interior. Its proportions are elongated on purpose to make its outline seem more slender, although this architectural solution made its interior too dark for holding divine services.

For centuries, the memorial church greeted everyone approaching the palace at Bogolyubovo. In spring, the area would be flooded, and the church appeared as if floating on water. The church itself has not been touched by later generations; only the dome's shape has been slightly changed, and porch-galleries were added in the 12th-century, rebuilt in 18th-century and then demolished. The walls are still covered with 12th-century stonecarvings.

In 1992, the church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the site White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal."

Bogolyubov Church and Monastery

"The Bogolyubov monastery is one of the most ancient monasteries in Russia. A place sanctified by Heavenly visit of Mother of God…The Orthodox shrine which has been providentially kept by God up to now. Having incorporated eight and a half centuries of the Russian history the monastery has become a live witness of bygone glory and power of Russian state, as well as its disgraceful ravage and decline. After all throughout centuries these things happened not once. But each time Russian people found forces to regain and revive the glory of Fatherland finding the help in God-given Orthodox church, its sacraments and sacred places like monasteries with their piety and true Christian spirit.
The history testifies to that the future glory of Vladimir as a capital of the Old Russian state started just from this place, from Bogolyubovo grad (God-loving town) and Bogolyubov monastery.
In 1155 prince Andrey Bogolyubsky obeying revelation from heaven left Kiev for the north-east of Russia. Having passed the small Vladimir town, the prince soon was forced to stop. 7 miles away from a town, on a steep bank of the Klyazma river, horses bearing the closed sleigh with a wonder-working icon of the Blessed Virgin suddenly stopped and refused to move any further. Having ordered to make a halt the prince spent all night praying before the icon. At midnight the Blessed Virgin Herself appeared to him, enjoining to put Her wonder-working icon in Vladimir and to build a cathedral and found a monastery in this place. The prince in accuracy fulfilled the enjoinment of Mother of God and in 1157 the construction of the monastery started. The wonder-working icon was named Vladimirskaya , in honor of Vladimir town, and since then till our days it has been the main shrine and symbol of Holy Russia. Besides, on orders of the prince, the first Russian icon of Mother of God named Bogolyubskaya (God-Loving Mother of God) was painted to memory the night vision."

Don't apologize. Your mistakes are absolutely natural.
Just from my side it would be wrong not to pay your attention to this.

Подстаканник

"Glass-holder - stand, cover and support a glass beaker, mostly cylindrical shape, having a handle to use hot tea without burning your palm. In Russia and the CIS holders are traditionally used in the railway sector as a compulsory element of tableware (their use greatly improves the stability of the glasses).

Modern coasters are made of nickel silver (German silver), brass, copper and silver. As a protective and decorative coating is used in the production of silver, gold, nickel."

Text by Wikipedia.

Стакан

"Glass - usually a glass container, similar in shape to a cylinder or a truncated cone, without a handle. It is used for hot and cold drinks. In the latter case often used cupholder.

The form is usually close to the glass cylinder or a truncated cone, but there are more complex forms of glasses. The main difference from other types of glass ware is the absence of handles. Glasses are also faceted.

The ratio of height to diameter of the glass base of about 2:1, and it is close to the size of a human hand. The volume of glass is typically 200-250 cc."

Do not have an individual name glass and glass holder together.
When you need to call it, say "стакан".

I suggest just to name this photo 'Pretty lady on train.'

The lake is fed by snowmelt, rain and a few rivers and streams: the Etimynk, Hakytsin, Vychenkiya and Kirushutk. From the lake flows the Ozernaya (Lake) river into the Sea of Okhotsk to the west. The magnitude of fluctuation in the water level is one to three meters (the highest levels are from May to June and the lowest in April). The average water temperature off the shore is between six and seven degrees Celsius in September.

In the north-east coast is the dormant volcano Ilyinsky (Elijah). There are a few islands in the lake, the largest of which, Samang, is 0.66 km˛. Other islands include Chayachy, Serdtse (Heart), Nizkii (Low), and Glinyanii (Clay). There are hot mineral springs in the area."

Great pics on this thread, btw.

Liberation of Sevastopol

It is the reconstruction of "the liberation of Sevastopol" at Navy Day (July 31) in Samara city. (2014)

"Sevastopol (Russian: Севасто́поль) is a city located in the southwestern region of the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea.

The location and navigability of the city's harbours have made Sevastopol a strategically important port and naval base throughout history. The city has been a home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which is why it was considered as a separate city in Crimea of significant military importance and was therefore once a closed city.

During World War II, Sevastopol withstood intensive bombardment by the Germans in 1941–42, supported by their Italian and Romanian allies during the Battle of Sevastopol. German forces were forced to use railway artillery and specialised heavy mortars to destroy Sevastopol's extremely heavy fortifications, such as the Maxim Gorky naval battery. After fierce fighting, which lasted for 250 days fortress city finally fell in July 1942.

It was liberated by the Red Army on May 9, 1944 and was awarded the Hero City title a year later."

"Samara (Russian: Сама́ра), known from 1935 to 1991 as Kuybyshev (Куйбышев), is the sixth largest city in Russia and the administrative center of Samara Oblast. It is situated in the southeastern part of European Russia at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers on the east bank of the Volga. The Volga acts as the city's western boundary; across the river are the Zhiguli Mountains. The northern boundary is formed by the Sokolyi Hills and by the steppes in the south and east.

Formerly a closed city, Samara is now a large and important social, political, economic, industrial, and cultural centre in European Russia. The life of Samara's citizens has always been intrinsically linked to the Volga River, which has not only served as the main commercial thoroughfare of Russia throughout several centuries, but also has great visual appeal. Samara's riverfront is considered one of the favourite recreation places both for local citizens and tourists."
