Auckland's colonial-era statues could be removed after vandalism, protests
Aug 19, 2020 A review of colonial-era monuments is underway to determine whether they should be removed, given their link to racial inequality in New Zealand’s past. The move comes after three monuments were vandalised in June, including a statue of former prime minister Sir George Grey in Albert Park which lost its finger and nose. Auckland Council will engage with local iwi before deciding on whether to keep the statues later in the year. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300...alism-protests |

After the Christchurch shootings, New Zealand promised change. But Muslims there still don’t feel safe
After the Christchurch shootings, New Zealand promised change. But Muslims there still don’t feel safe
Aug 24, 2020 In the days and weeks after a right-wing terrorist live-streamed the massacre of 51 people at two Christchurch mosques, New Zealand’s leaders promised the country would change. “I don’t have all of the answers now, but we must collectively find them. And we must act,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, after the worst mass shooting in the country’s modern history on March 15, 2019. Within 24 hours of the shooting, she announced that gun laws would change. Within days, she put on a hijab for an emotional meeting with members of the Muslim community. Within four weeks, the gun reforms passed through Parliament almost unanimously. And within two months, Ardern launched a global campaign to stop terrorism spreading on social media. https://www.kesq.com/news/national-w...ont-feel-safe/ |

Cannabis referendum: Would legalisation change the 'race-based' targeting of Māori?
Sep 04 2020 A clergyman, a disability and human rights lawyer, a drug dealer and a doctor all have personal stories about cannabis. They agree too many Māori have been penalised for the drug but are divided about whether recreational use should be legalised. Carmen Parahi reports. Human rights lawyer Dr Huhana Hickey claims she knows of lawyers, judges and police officers who all use cannabis. But she won’t name them. Instead, Hickey uses their consumption of cannabis as an example of the racism involved in current drug laws. She’ll be voting yes in the cannabis legalisation and control referendum on October 17. Criminalisation a ‘racist policy’ “I can tell you it’s not like they’re innocent,” says Hickey. She calls the criminalisation of the drug, “a race-based hate for cannabis”. https://www.stuff.co.nz/pou-tiaki/30...geting-of-mori |

Friday, 18 September 2020 Dr Efraim Zuroff has joined the Holocaust and Antisemitism Foundation, Aotearoa New Zealand, as a member of its International Council. For the past four decades, he has played a leading role in helping to facilitate the prosecution of Holocaust perpetrators all over the world, and is the person who revealed the immigration to New Zealand of dozens of suspected Nazi war criminals. https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO20...foundation.htm |

Nazi flags and badges sold at Nelson auction despite protests
Oct 4, 2020 Nazi memorabilia went under the hammer in Nelson on Sunday despite multiple calls for the items to be withdrawn and an overnight graffiti attack on the auction house. Police confirmed they were investigating an incident of wilful damage to a business premises in Nelson. About 20 people reportedly attended the auction. Some were residents who outlined their concerns, and said they were asked to leave after they spoke out. Anne Smith said the auction made her feel “ashamed after what we promised the Muslim people, to stand beside them in banning all right-wing ideology in New Zealand”. “To see all those swastikas pinned up around the walls made me physically ill,” Smith said. “The loss of lives from all countries, war glorified for profit.” https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/122...spite-protests |

Group calls out art exhibition of neo-Nazi flags, white nationalism symbols Nov 11, 2020 Opponents of an Auckland art exhibition which featured neo-Nazi flags and symbols of white nationalism have received an apology from one of the exhibition's co-facilitators, but say it doesn't go far enough. The exhibition by Mercy Pictures gallery closed last week, but has come under intense scrutiny by locals and activist group Tāmaki Anti-Fascist Action who believe the display, which did not include context or justification, was deeply hurtful. In a statement, a spokesperson for the group said many of the images used were clearly symbols of oppression, disguised as art. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/...nalism-symbols |

New Police Minister wants more diversity but treads softly around race
Nov 23 2020 Expectations are high for the country’s first female Pasifika Police Minister Poto Williams to address acknowledged unconscious bias within the police service. Williams’ predecessor Stuart Nash said there wasn’t systemic racism in the police, a view contradicted by the then Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis and Police Commissioner Andrew Coster. During the Black Lives Matter protests Coster acknowledged poor outcomes for Māori in particular, saying, “We need to make sure that we’re not part of the problem, and we’re part of the solution.” https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/cri...ly-around-race |

Teachers lead new campaign to combat racism
May 18, 2021 A new campaign designed to help teachers confront racism should lead to a change of attitudes in the classroom. The Teaching Council has launched a campaign, “Unteach Racism” to give teachers the support to identify and dismantle racism in schools and preschools. Unteach Racism is made so teachers and education leaders can make a difference for children facing prejudice and bias based on ethnicity. The campaign uses an app and website, with resources for teachers to grow their understanding of racism. It is optional for teachers and not intended to be taught to pupils. Students will benefit from the change, through teachers adjusting their practice. https://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-sta...-combat-racism |

Canterbury brewer at centre of racism furore after 'Māori scurge' post officially quits company
May 18, 2021 An email sent to shareholders late last night announced David Gaughan would resign his position as owner and director of Eagle Brewing in Kaiapoi and would be “leaving the business altogether”. In the note, his partner, Marilyn, wrote that they had met with lawyers and the company was aiming to appoint an independent director by the end of the week, with the brand name to change “to distance itself from Eagle”. She added that “unfortunately we will also be separating in our relationship”, and said she will now receive Gaughan’s shares and be the majority shareholder and director. It comes after Eagle products were pulled from major retailers and suppliers in response to a racist post Gaughan wrote on Facebook, claiming "Māori are New Zealand’s biggest problem” and “the quicker we put them in prison the better”. https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-...-quits-company |

New Zealand Green Party accused of supporting ‘fascism’ after relocating portrait of ‘greatest anti-fascist’ Winston Churchill
Aug 11, 2021 The New Zealand National Party condemned the Green Party for getting a portrait of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill relocated in Parliament, while another party accused the Greens of embracing fascism. “Sir Winston Churchill, the greatest anti-fascist leader of the 20th century is removed from the walls of Parliament because the Greens don’t like him,” tweeted New Zealand National Party leader Judith Collins on Tuesday, adding that the portrait would be moved to her party’s offices in Parliament. https://www.rt.com/news/531739-new-z...ent-churchill/ |

No more All Whites? NZ Football consider dropping national team's nickname
Aug 23, 2021 New Zealand Football (NZF) is contemplating dropping the All Whites moniker for the men's national team. The potential change is part of a wider process NZF is going through to ensure they are up to the mark when it comes to cultural inclusivity. It comes on the back of the heightened worldwide awareness around racism and racial inequality, and the name's potentially racist connotations, and RNZ understands the national body began gauging feedback on the potential change more than six months ago. https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/footba...teams-nickname |

Flyers by neo-Nazi group distributed in Napier
Sep 1, 2022 Flyers with information about the far-right Neo-Nazi group the National Socialist Movement have been dropped into letterboxes in Napier. A resident, who wants to remain anonymous, says he and his neighbours received the flyers on Sunday night. The flyers incorrectly state the Holocaust never happened, and reference untrue information by Holocaust deniers. "I was really lost for words to be honest," the resident told 1News, "I’m all for free speech, but hate speech is disgusting." The flyers were received on the same day the group's New Zealand and Australia branch posted of an alleged recruitment drive in New Zealand on Telegram. A website listed on the flyer links through to a US website displaying far right imagery. https://www.1news.co.nz/2022/09/02/f...ted-in-napier/ |

Media Council: Racism Against White People Not Possible
Friday, 14 April 2023 Press Release: ACT New Zealand “The organisation that deals with complaints about media content says people don’t deserve protection from racism, ironically because of their race. It concluded that it’s not possible for white people to be victims of racism, seemingly unaware the conclusion itself is racist”, says ACT Leader David Seymour. “In defending Stuff’s publication of ‘The 250th anniversary of James Cook’s arrival in New Zealand’ by poet Tusiata Avia, the Media Council says ‘less powerful groups…can seldom be racist’. “New Zealanders will be appalled that a double standard is being applied to racism in the media. “After receiving a number of complaints about a poem that incites violence against white people, the Media Council concluded the poem ‘provides some balance to a long-running debate’ about colonisation. “The Council said that describing violence against people based on their ethnicity was somehow not racist: https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA23...t-possible.htm |

Auckland surgeons must now consider ethnicity in prioritising patients for operations - some are not happy
18 Jun, 2023 Auckland surgeons are now required to consider a patient’s ethnicity alongside other factors when deciding who should get an operation first. Several surgeons say they are upset by the policy, which was introduced in Auckland in February and gave priority to Māori and Pacific Island patients - on the grounds that they have historically had unequal access to healthcare. Health officials stress that ethnicity is just one of five factors considered in deciding when a person gets surgery, and that it is an important step in addressing poor health outcomes within Māori and Pacific populations. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/auckla...LADSRR6VTGQWE/ |
