Accused killer has bail revoked after murder charge in NYC death of Indiana tourist

By Georgett Roberts and Jorge Fitz-Gibbon
November 9, 2022

The Brooklyn thug charged with gunning down a young Indiana tourist outside a Bushwick Airbnb in 2020 has been indicted on a second-degree murder charge — and finally had his bail yanked.

William Freeman, 26, who was picked up last week and charged in the senseless Oct. 23, 2020, shooting death of 20-year-old Ethan Williams, had been held on $350,000 bail until Brooklyn prosecutors revealed in court that a grand jury had slapped him with the murder rap.

“Now that there is an indictment, the top count, murder-2, I am asking the court to revisit this issue… because there is now a change in circumstances,” Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Caroline Camomanes said.

Criminal Court Judge Christopher Robles agreed.

2 Hawaiian men guilty of hate crime in white man’s beating

By JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER
November 18, 2022

HONOLULU (AP) — A jury on Thursday found two Native Hawaiian men guilty of a hate crime for the 2014 beating of a white man who was fixing up a house he purchased in their remote Maui neighborhood.

U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright ordered Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi and Levi Aki Jr. detained pending sentencing scheduled for March 2, and marshals moved to handcuff the two men after the verdict was announced in the afternoon.

Family members and supporters wept in the courtroom and called out to the men: “I love you,” and “Be good.” “God bless you daddy,” said Alo-Kaonohi’s son Kahue, 3.

In an unusual move, the U.S. Department of Justice sought to prosecute Alo-Kaonohi and Aki and secured a federal grand jury indictment in December 2020 charging each with a hate crime count punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors alleged during the trial in U.S. District Court in Honolulu that Alo-Kaonohi and Aki were motivated by Christopher Kunzelman’s race when they punched, kicked and used a shovel to beat him in Kahakuloa village. Kunzelman was left with injuries including a concussion, two broken ribs and head and abdominal trauma, prosecutors said.
(...)
Kunzelman said he decided to take two pistols to Maui after hearing that a contractor he hired to do mold remediation had been assaulted when he showed up and after his realtor said the close-knit community of Native Hawaiians had a problem with white people.
(...)
“Haole,” a Hawaiian word with meanings that include foreign and white person, was central to the case, highlighting multicultural Hawaii’s nuanced and complicated relationship with race.

At one point Aki is heard saying, “You’s a haole, eh,” using a Hawaiian word that can mean white person. Defense attorneys said he didn’t use the word in a derogatory way.

North Carolina man pleads guilty, sentenced to life without parole in murder of 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant

Darius Sessoms, 25, avoided a possible death sentence with the guilty plea

By Andrew Mark Miller | Fox News

A North Carolina man accused of shooting and killing a 5-year-old boy in an unprovoked attack has avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty and will serve the rest of his life in prison without parole.

Darius Sessoms, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Thursday at the Wilson County Courthouse for the August 2020 shooting of 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant in a case that a judge ruled in October would be tried as a capital murder case that brought a possible death sentence, WRAL-TV reported.

Sessoms had been charged after prosecutors say he walked up to Cannon, his neighbor in Wilson, North Carolina, and shot him in the head at point-blank range as the boy rode his bike in front of his 7-year-old and 8-year-old sisters.

4 arrested in connection with LSU student who died, authorities say

By Lester Duhé and Gray News staff
Published: Jan. 24, 2023 at 2:38 PM GMT+1

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) - Deputies have arrested four men in connection with an incident that eventually led to Louisiana State University student Madison Brooks being hit and killed by a vehicle in Baton Rouge earlier this month.

Two of them have been charged with third-degree rape in the case, investigators said.

The other two have been charged with principle to rape, meaning they were present but did not take part in the alleged crime, arrest documents show.

Deputies arrested four in LSU student Madison Brooks case: from left, Kaivon Deondre Washington, Casen Carver and Everette Lee.(East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office)

Deputies charged both Kaivon Deondre Washington, 18, of Walker, and an unidentified minor with third-degree rape. The minor is 17 years old.

Everette Lee, 28, of Pine Grove, and Casen Carver, 18, of Denham Springs, were both charged with principle to third-degree rape.

A third-degree rape charge generally involves a victim who is “incapable of resisting or of understanding the nature of the act by reason of a stupor or abnormal condition of mind produced by an intoxicating agent or any cause and the offender knew or should have known of the victim’s incapacity,” according to Louisiana law.

Investigators said Carver admitted that he and the three other males went to Reggie’s Bar near the LSU campus and consumed alcohol, the arrest warrant states.

HAMMOND, La. (WVUE) - A 19-year-old man from Hammond was arrested for first-degree murder Sunday (Jan. 29) night after police say they learned that he allegedly shot a woman inside of her car who later died as the result.

Police say Johnathan Williams was taken into custody without incident at his home not far from where the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m.

Around 7:11 p.m., police say that a driver who was a witness to the shooting flagged down officers in the area of Southwest Railroad Avenue and Old Covington Highway. Inside the car, police say they observed Tori Banks, 24, suffering from a gunshot wound. Banks was transferred to a local hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries.

The driver that flagged down authorities told them that they witnessed the shooting at a gas station on Southwest Railroad Avenue. The driver told police that Williams pulled out a gun inside Banks’s car, which was parked at the gas station, striking her and threatening to shoot a fellow passenger. The driver told police he then placed Banks in their car and began transporting her to the nearest hospital before flagging down authorities after noticing them along the way.

An ER doctor was killed after being mown down by a Lexus and then stabbed to death by the driver in an apparent road rage incident.

Dr Michael Mammone, 58, was cycling on the Pacific Coast Highway, California, when he was run over by a white Lexus which sped through a red light at an intersection on Wednesday at around 3pm.

Witnesses say he was holding a BB gun when he approached Dr Mammone, a married father-of-two, and was screaming racial slurs about 'white privilege' , according to ABC7.

Shocking video shows the moment Smith, a trained accountant, careered into the cyclist, with police claiming that the pair were complete strangers.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Nearly 22 years after Christine Franke was found dead in her Orlando apartment, the man accused of fatally shooting the UCF student is on trial for first degree murder.

Benjamin Lee Holmes, 42, was arrested in 2018 after detectives turned to genealogists to help them identify the source of DNA found at the crime scene.

During opening statements, Holmes’s attorney did not dispute that his client’s DNA was found on the victim’s body.
