Default Nazi Party and Big Business

For this afternoon, Walter Funk, (Hitler's connection to the big industiralists) had invited the two leading men of the Allianz, whose headquarters were opposite the Hotel Kaiserhof (where Hitler lived), Dr Schimtt and von Finck. When the they came in at four o'clock Hitler explained his thinking. Then there was a short discussion, which made it clear that both gentlemen, in view of the impossibility of solving the unemployment problem, saw the political situation as being very dark, and therefore anticipated a great shift to the left. Funk went out with them and came back five minutes later with the message that Allianz would make five million Marks available. HItler was for a moment speechless. When Funk had left, Hitler asked whether I had anticipated such sums. When I said yes, he said "There you just see the power that big business has. Because these millions are power. And when they make these millions available to us, they cannot at the same time make them available to another party or organisation. So they are giving us their power!"

Hitler certainly did have support from the Capitalists

Really? Are you sure 'some capitalists' is not more accurate, or just 'capitalists'.

But all of them? Who is overegging?

well, no, not all the capitalists. Just the most important ones. Like the Deutsche Bank (which was and remaind private throughout the war), Thyssen, Krupp, the Quandt family, who had massive investments in the armaments industry, and Allianz insurance, who calmly made five million Deutschmarks available to Hitler in 1931 -- even Hitler was surprised, according to the diary of Otto Wagener, his finance adviser.

according to a very conservative estimate, in 1931 about half of the German companies listed on the stock exchange (by value, one in seven by number) had strong links to the Nazi party -- in other words, the biggest companies were backing the Nazis. And they were well rewarded.

[but were they backing the NSDAP before its success or after it? The important point is that those who claim Hitler or his party were the product or tool of big business or capitalists are wrong.]

[from Guardian comment]

[...]Hitler only started getting significant support from Big Business after he had already achieved his breakthrough 1930 Election. Before that Big Business supported the rival right-wing Nationalist Party, the DNVP.

Big Business gave huge amounts to Hitler after 1931. He rewarded them handsomely.

But that is not the same- as some Leftists sometimes assert- as saying Big Business controlled Hitler. he was always his own man and he controlled them rather than the other way round.
