New York City is paying for migrants' bus tickets upstate. Their next stop: crossing into Canada

With an overflow of migrants, NYC offering financial help to those looking to relocate

Asylum seekers can go from New York City to parts of the state near the U.S. border with Canada — and later attempt to cross at Roxham Road — with a bus ticket paid for by American authorities.

Mayor Eric Adams's office says it does not finance tickets to Roxham Road, and does not help people cross the Canada-U.S. border. But people who want to go to Plattsburgh, N.Y., — which is near the Canadian border — can do so by bus.

For several months, New York City has been facing an "unprecedented crisis," she said.

New York's newly opened migrant assistance centres are overwhelmed. Every week, several Republican states send hundreds of people to the northeast after they arrive from Mexico.

“I’ve had friends say Shakespeare is irrelevant”: Meet the Grade 12 student who changed the TDSB’s English curriculum

Eighteen-year-old Isaiah Shafqat successfully advocated for a mandatory Grade 11 Indigenous literature course across Toronto schools

BY MATHEW SILVER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSHUA BEST | FEBRUARY 3, 2023

This week, the TDSB voted to replace the standard Grade 11 English curriculum—which typically features classics by Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare—with a course focused on the work of contemporary Indigenous authors. The decision has a lot of critics clutching their dog-eared copies of The Great Gatsby. But Isaiah Shafqat, the 12th grader and student trustee who advocated for the new class, says it’s the perfect time to study Indigenous culture, history and politics.

In ‘The Talented Mr. Rosenberg,’ a con artist tale so strange it’s hard to believe

Acclaimed filmmaker Barry Avrich covers what might be his most peculiar subject to date: Albert Rosenberg, a charlatan with so many cover stories, even his family doesn’t know him

By RICH TENORIO
17 February 2023, 5:36 am

From the righteous to the revolting, Jewish Canadian film director Barry Avrich’s documentary profiles run the gamut. But he’s never had a subject quite like Albert Rosenberg.

Nicknamed the Yorkville Swindler after the tony Toronto neighborhood where he allegedly hatched outrageous cons, Rosenberg is the focus of Avrich’s latest film, “The Talented Mr. Rosenberg,” which made its United States premiere at the Miami Jewish Film Festival last month and has been picked up by Warner Bros, with a fall streaming release date soon to be announced.

“These seem to be the halcyon days of the con artist film,” Avrich told The Times of Israel. “It’s kind of a fun topic around the world.”
(...)
Avrich himself grew up following the straight and narrow. Raised in a kosher home in Montreal, he was close to his grandfather, a well-known local butcher who let needy customers buy on credit. Every weekend, Avrich accompanied his grandfather for collections.

The onetime butcher’s assistant has grown up into an acclaimed documentarian, with his latest recognition coming via five Canadian Screen Award nominations for “The Talented Mr. Rosenberg.”

According to the hour-plus-long feature, Rosenberg is a serial con artist who has donned multiple guises over the decades, including those of a Swiss baron and a billionaire, while defrauding ex-wives, art galleries, business colleagues and sundry others. His rap sheet dates to the late 1980s and includes multiple prison sentences.

In 2013, the luxury Yorkville penthouse dweller was arrested in a fraud case totaling around $1 million. Two years later, Canadian journalist Courtney Shea profiled Rosenberg for Toronto Life magazine, which not only gave the con artist his memorable nickname, but also brought him to Avrich’s attention. Shea joined the film as a co-producer and co-writer.

Canada's use of emergency powers during 'Freedom Convoy' met threshold, commissioner says

By Anna Mehler Paperny

TORONTO, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Canada's government met the threshold for invoking emergency powers when it did so in early 2022 to deal with border blockades and an occupation that brought parts of the capital to a standstill in opposition to vaccine mandates but the necessity of such emergency powers could have been avoided, the commissioner of an independent inquiry said on Friday.

For weeks last January and early February, the "Freedom Convoy" demonstrations against a wide range of government measures including COVID-19 vaccine mandates shut down Ottawa and blocked some border crossings, leading the federal government to invoke emergency powers to end the protests.

Roxham: The little country road that became a big political headache for the Trudeau government

Multiple politicians have called for the unofficial crossing to be closed. It's not that simple

A small road straddling the Canada-U.S. border has become a political hot potato again in recent weeks as politicians call on Ottawa to close it to migrants claiming asylum.

Quebec Premier François Legault recently wrote a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking him to close Roxham Road to asylum-seekers. Thousands of them have crossed into Canada from the United States at Roxham in recent years.

Legault claimed that the influx of people waiting to have their claims heard has put heavy pressure on the province's public services. In a similar letter published Tuesday in the Globe and Mail, Legault asked other provinces to help.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also has called on Trudeau to close Roxham Road. Trudeau himself said Wednesday the government is working on shutting down the irregular border crossing. But it's not at all clear how Ottawa could do that.

Here's what you need to know.

Northern Ontario diocese ignored decades of sexual misconduct allegations against priests, volunteers

From 1950s to 2010s, 12 priests and volunteers are said to have abused 40 people

WARNING: This article contains graphic content and may affect those who have experienced sexual violence or know someone affected by it.

A Catholic diocese in Northern Ontario protected priests who faced allegations of sexual misconduct for decades, an investigation by Radio-Canada's Enquête has found.

From the 1950s to the 2010s, 12 priests and volunteers are said to have abused some 40 people; almost all were minors at the time. Rather than being punished, some priests were transferred to other parishes, with these transfers happening well into the 2010s.

The diocese, now known as Hearst-Moosonee, is about 11 hours north of Toronto and comprises about two dozen parishes, many along the northern edge of Highway 11, deep in the boreal forest.

Hearst-Moosonee is one of Ontario's most isolated dioceses, and the church remains an important institution there. It also helped settle the area with a mostly francophone population in the 1920s. This double isolation — geographical and linguistic — made the church an influential player in the region, and it remains involved in several local organizations.

Climate change threatens Canadian security, prosperity, warns stark spy agency brief

Changes could create new fights over Arctic, freshwater, among others

Jim Bronskill · The Canadian Press · Posted: Mar 05, 2023 10:58 AM EST | Last Updated: 9 hours ago

Canada's spy service warns that climate change poses a profound, ongoing threat to national security and prosperity, including the possible loss of parts of British Columbia and the Atlantic provinces to rising sea levels.

A newly released analysis by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) also foresees an increase in ideologically motivated violent extremism from people who want to speed up climate change solutions and those more interested in preserving their current way of life.

The brief was prepared in April 2021 but only recently disclosed to The Canadian Press in response to an Access to Information request filed in October of that year.

Parents angry over 'safe spaces' for LGBTQ students disrupt York Catholic board meeting

Police were called in after parents forced board to pause meeting Tuesday

Police were called in to deal with angry parents after they disrupted a Catholic school board meeting north of Toronto earlier this week over the issue of safe spaces for LGBTQ students.

The parents attended the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) meeting Tuesday evening in Aurora to oppose what are known as "safe space" stickers, which are used by some teachers to signal acceptance to LGBTQ children and teens.

Carlo Ravenna, one of the parents, spoke directly to the board about the stickers in a pre-approved deputation.

"They shouldn't say 'safe space.' They should say 'danger zone,'" he said at the meeting. "Preaching confusion in the guise of inclusivity and acceptance is truly disgusting."

The parents say the stickers, and any LGBTQ-inclusive messaging, are at odds with their Catholic faith.

Sheree di Vittorio, another parent who made a virtual deputation, told the board, "Catholic schools should not allow transgender or LGBT students to attend."

"It is most certainly not appropriate to engage kids to be open to these ideologies. There are biblical reasons why homosexuality is considered a sin … regardless of what Pope Francis may think," she said.

Man accused of hate crimes at drag storytime won't commit to staying away from LGBTQ events

Derek Reimer remains in custody because he won't sign his release conditions

Meghan Grant · CBC News · Posted: Mar 06, 2023 2:33 PM EST | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

Derek Reimer is escorted away from an all-ages drag brunch at the Rec Room three weeks ago. More recently, he was arrested and charged with hate-motivated crimes after disrupting a storytime event at the Seton public library. (Brangwyn Jones)

The Calgary man facing hate-crime charges after disrupting a storytime event at the Seton public library refuses to sign release conditions ordering him to stay away from LGBTQ2S+ community members and their events.

Derek Reimer, 36, faces criminal charges of mischief and causing a disturbance as well as six harassment charges under the City of Calgary's public behaviour bylaw.

Reimer is accused of shouting homophobic and transphobic slurs at children and parents who were attending a Reading with Royalty event on Feb. 25.

The family-friendly storytimes at public libraries are led by local drag queens or kings, and children are invited to dress in their best outfit, cape or crown.

Reimer says conditions 'impossible to satisfy'

Reimer appeared in provincial court last week after his arrest and was granted bail on a $3,000 promise to pay under two conditions:

He is not permitted to have contact in person or over social media with any identified LGBTQ2S+ community member.

He is not allowed to attend or be within 200 metres of an LGBTQ2S+ community event.

Biological male pedophile who raped 13-year-old girl transferred to Ontario women’s prison

Radcliffe was sentenced to an indeterminate jail term in 2010 after being convicted of the rape of a 13-year-old girl the offender met in an Ottawa coffee shop.

A pedophile classified as a dangerous offender has been transferred to a women’s prison in Ontario, according to prison advocate Heather Mason.

The convicted sex offender reportedly now goes by the name of Carissa Marie Radcliffe, and has been transferred to Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener. Radcliffe was sentenced to an indeterminate jail term in 2010 after being convicted of the rape of a 13-year-old girl the offender met in an Ottawa coffee shop.
(...)
Since 2017, the CSC has been permitting male criminals to self-identify as female and be transferred to women’s prisons. Prime Minister Trudeau appeared to agree to this policy on little more than a whim in 2017.

Trudeau was questioned at a town hall in Kingston, ON in January 2017 by a participant who described the policy in place at the time of housing inmates by biological sex as "torture" for transgender inmates.

Trudeau replied that it was "not on his radar, but that he would move to address it" now that it was, the CBC reported.

"I will make sure we look at it and we address it and we do right in recognizing that trans rights are human rights and we need to make sure we are defending everyone's dignity and rights in every way we can," he said.

He made no mention of incarcerated women’s rights or dignity at the time and has not done so since.

Toronto school board becomes first in Canada to recognize caste discrimination

By Kanishka Singh

March 9 (Reuters) - Toronto's school board has become the first in Canada to recognize that caste discrimination exists in the city's schools and has asked a provincial human rights body to help in creating a framework to address the issue.

The Toronto District School Board on Wednesday voted in favor of a motion to that effect, which was introduced by board trustee Yalini Rajakulasingam. Sixteen trustees voted in favor of the motion and five voted against it.

The move addresses an issue important to the area's South Asian diaspora, particularly the Indian and Hindu communities. It comes weeks after Seattle became the first U.S. city to outlaw caste discrimination after a city council vote.

India's caste system is among the world's oldest forms of rigid social stratification.

"This motion is not about division, it is about creating healing and empowering communities and providing them safer schools that students deserve," Rajakulasingam said.

Transgender cartoonist with diaper fetish allegedly attacks journalist in Manchester

A British journalist alleges that he was attacked by the Canadian transgender cartoonist who creates diaper fetish art after he attended an event in Manchester in late February.

Mia Ashton Montreal QC
Mar 6, 2023

A British journalist alleges that he was attacked by the Canadian transgender cartoonist who creates diaper fetish art after he attended an event in Manchester on February 26.

Jack Hadfield, a writer for Valiant News, went to listen to Sophie Labelle speak at a bar in Manchester’s Gay Village. Labelle’s speaking tour of England recently came under scrutiny after it was discovered that the biological male who speaks openly about having a diaper fetish was scheduled to give a talk at a “family friendly” event hosted by Sheffield library.

Labelle has faced criticism for allegedly using photographs of real children found online and turning them into the diaper fetish art known as “diaperfur art.” This form of artistic expression combines an interest in anthropomorphic animal characters with an interest in wearing diapers, normally as part of baby role-play in a sexual context.

'Shift' in Holocaust education needed to counter growing ignorance: Educator

Mar 20, 2023

In the past, details about the world’s largest genocide weren’t required learning in Ontario’s classrooms and that may have contributed to ignorance about the subject, a London advocate for Holocaust education says.

“Survey after survey finds a profound lack of understanding about the Holocaust among the general public and schoolchildren in particular,” said Eric Robinson, program director at Jewish London. “This is true for both in Canada in particular and North America more generally.”

Canada's population grew by record 1 million in 2022, spurred by international migration

Total population closing in on 40 million as Canada remains fastest-growing G7 country: StatsCan

Thomson Reuters · Posted: Mar 22, 2023 5:20 PM EDT | Last Updated: March 23

New Statistics Canada figures show the country added more than one million new people in 2022 — the biggest one-year population spike since 1957. But while a growing population brings new energy and ideas, it comes as Canada struggles with a serious housing crisis.

Canada's population increased by more than a million people for the first time in history in 2022, almost entirely due to a surge in immigrants and temporary residents, Statistics Canada said on Wednesday.

Total population grew by a record 1.05 million people to 39.57 million in the 12 months to Jan. 1, 2023, and about 96 per cent of the rise was due to international migration, the statistics agency said.

The increase, which helped Canada retain its position as the fastest-growing G7 country, translates to a population growth rate of 2.7 per cent and such a rate would lead to the population doubling in about 26 years, the agency said.

Canada depends on immigration to drive its economy and support an aging population, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government sharply ramped up immigration since taking power in 2015.

Two dead, over a million without power after ice storm hits Canada

By Ismail Shakil

OTTAWA, April 6 (Reuters) - Two people died and more than a million were without power on Thursday after an ice storm hit Canada's two most-populated provinces ahead of a holiday weekend, bringing freezing rain and strong winds that toppled trees and weighed down power lines.

Just under a million people did not have power in Quebec and about 110,000 in Ontario as of 4 p.m. (2000 GMT), according to Poweroutage.com. Outages combined for both provinces had crossed at least 1.3 million earlier in the day.
