Athens: Rightists clash with immigrants

16 January 2011 | 13:34 | Source: Tanjug

ATHENS -- Extreme right groups threw stones at immigrants, unionists and human rights activists in Athens who were protesting against a wall on the Greek-Turkish border.

The extremists then clashed with police who used tear gas.

At least 100 members of neo-Nazi groups and about 200 residents attacked the participants of the peaceful protest with stones. Police used tear gas and signal flares several times, an official said.

Two people were arrested and 13 were taken for questioning, the Greek media have reported.

500,000 of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers live in Greece and the number of people who pass through Greece in order to reach other EU member states is constantly rising.

Therefore, the Greek authorities intend to build a 12-kilometer-long wall on the Greek-Turkish border. The polls show that as many as 73 percent of citizens support the decision.

Anti-Semitism is Back in Greece

Adar 18, 5771, 22 February 11 12:12
by Chana Ya'ar

(Israelnationalnews.com) Anti-Semitism is rearing its ugly head in Greece, where the phenomenon is more prevalent than ever especially in Athens.

In the 10 months since a Holocaust memorial was dedicated in the Greek capital, a neo-Nazi candidate has been elected to the city council and the city's Jewish Museum of Greece has been slathered with swastikas.

Jewish cemeteries have been desecrated across the country, and Holocaust monuments and synagogues have been vandalized. The country's 6,000 Jews a vestige of the 60,000 others who were deported in 1943 and 1944 to Nazi death camps have been the target of a recent surge in hate crimes in Greece.

Moreover, a visit this month by Jewish American leaders was greeted with dismay, and unchallenged anti-Semitism by many, including a prominent Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis. Zionism and its leaders are here, meeting in our country! he warned in a television interview. This is no laughing matter, he said, slamming Zionism and its control over America and the banking system of which Greece has now become a victim. Theodorakis openly admitted to being an anti-Semite on the program, a confession that reportedly did not raise even an eyebrow.

We've always been under siege by fanatics and far-right political movements here, David Saltiel, president of the Central Jewish Board of Greece, told the LA Times in an interview published Monday. The fear now is that anti-Semitism will get worse with the financial crisis.

The country's deep economic difficulties prompted a massive 110 billion euro ($147 billion) bailout last year by 15 financial ministers in the EuroZone (European Union) and the International Money Fund. The leaders of the 16-nation Eurogroup agreed to the deal in order to prevent Greece from defaulting on its massive debt. But the bailout could not prevent the rage triggered by the cascade of unemployment and skyrocketing immigration -- some of which has since been aimed at the Jews.

Extremists attack immigrants in Greek capital

May 12, 2011, 17:35 GMT

Locals stand on 12 May 2011 at the spot where a 44-year-old local man was stabbed to death at dawn on Tuesday in central Athens. Police said the victim, who was retrieving his car from a parking lot to take his pregnant wife to a maternity ward to give birth to their second child, was fatally stabbed by three suspects, ostensibly for a video camera he was carrying. The shocking incident generated several attacks against mostly Third World migrants in the same congested urban area, although authorities have not released any information on the identities of the killers. The specific inner city district where the murder occurred -- within walking distance from the city's central Omonia square -- has attracted over recent years numerous illegal migrants. A protest at the site, which authorities fear will attract far right groups, is planning later on Thursday.

Athens - Groups of right-wing extremists chased and attacked immigrants through the streets of Athens Thursday during a protest against a deadly mugging of a Greek man earlier this week.

Nationalists and far-right groups have blamed immigrants for Tuesday's stabbing of a Greek man in an area of the city where many immigrants are known to live, although officials say no evidence has been revealed to suggest that they are responsible.

The murder has shocked and sparked outrage, as the victim had been about to drive his pregnant wife to a maternity hospital and was apparently killed for his video camera.

More than 2,000 hooded youths, carrying sticks and broken bottles, could be seen chasing and clashing with immigrants through the streets in central Athens, sending others to run for cover during the rally.

Riot police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowd. At least 15 immigrants and one Greek man were hospitalised with injuries while more than 50 people were reportedly detained.

Similar anti-immigrant rallies have taken place since Tuesday night, after the fatal stabbing.

Police are also investigating the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old Bangladeshi, which took place earlier Thursday in central Athens. No arrests have been made and the motive for the attack remained unclear.

'There is the serious threat of Athens becoming a war zone similar to the likes of Beirut during the 1970s,' said Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis.

Immigrants have been beaten and stabbed in many of the city's squares over recent months. Several makeshift mosques, usually situated in garages or basements of apartment blocks, have been bombed, set on fire, and vandalized.

Last year, assailants locked the door of a basement prayer house and hurled firebombs through the windows, seriously wounding five worshippers in the area of St Panteleimonos.

The area is often the site of angry rallies by local residents, often infiltrated by extreme nationalist groups. The anger is aimed at what they charge is a crime wave fuelled by illegal immigrants and the downgrading of the neighborhood.

Far-right groups have won increasing public support in recent months. The leader of group Chrysi Avghi won a seat on Athens' city council for the first time in elections last November.

25 injured during far-right rampage against immigrants in Greece's capital

Gangs of far-right youths attacked dark-skinned immigrants in central Athens and clashed with riot police Thursday, leaving at least 25 people injured, in a show of force by extremist groups.

Quote:
The attacks, which lasted several hours, occurred following a downtown protest against a deadly mugging that had happened earlier in the week.

Several hundred youths, dressed in black and some wielding bats, were involved in the daytime attacks in an area where thousands of Asian and African immigrants live. Immigrants were chased through narrow streets of the city's Kato Patissia neighborhood and punched and kicked to the ground by groups of attackers.

Officials from a state-run Polykliniki and Athens General hospitals told the AP that 25 people were treated for injuries following the clashes _ 19 immigrants and six Greeks, with one man remaining overnight for observation.

Thursday's clashes followed a spike in racial attacks in Greece during its financial crisis and the election of the leader of a violent far-right Chrysi Avgi organization to Athens' City Council in November.

Police said 48 protesters were detained for questioning but none were immediately charged.

Human Rights Watch urged Greek authorities to conduct "a diligent investigation" and prosecute the violent offenders.

"It's horrifying. Clearly these are indiscriminate racist attacks in a city and a country that by all accounts has seen a troubling _ an alarming _ rise in racist sentiment and racist violence over the past several years," Judith Sunderland, a senior for researcher at the rights group for Western Europe told the AP.

Far-right and nationalist groups have seized on witness testimony that immigrants allegedly carried out the fatal stabbing on Tuesday of a man who was about to drive his pregnant wife to a hospital. Police have not identified any suspects.

A makeshift shrine with candles and flowers now stands at the site of the killing.

The far-right youths joined and eventually took over a peaceful demonstration from that site to Athens' City Hall, chasing and beating migrants as they marched through the city center. But most of the trouble occurred after the rally.

Thugs in motorcycle helmets beat up immigrants, sending others fleeing for safety amid heavy rush-hour traffic. Similar attacks have occurred over the past two days.

The black-clad ultranationalist youths marched through migrant areas, and running battles with riot police broke out as youths chased immigrants down side streets. Male and female protesters were seen taking part in the beatings.

Clashes with police broke out in a red-light district of the capital, where riot police fired volleys of tear gas, as women in closed-up brothels peered out of windows and balconies at the violence below.

The rioters taunted immigrant onlookers on apartment block windows and broke into chants of "Where are the foreigners now?" and "Jobs for Greeks only."

Also Thursday, police said they were investigating the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old Bangladeshi man in a crime-ridden part of central Athens with a strong far-right presence. There have been no arrests, and the motive of the attack was unclear.

Greece is the EU's main entry point for illegal immigrants. Over the past few years, the capital's center has seen a major increase in migrant numbers, which, combined with worsening crime rates, has prompted a far-right backlash.

A government spokesman on Thursday condemned violence during frequent anti-government protests and the recent racial attacks, but could not be reached for further comment.

On Wednesday, 20,000 people marched through Athens to protest the Socialist government's painful austerity measures. Most of the protest was peaceful, but clashes occurred between petrol bomb- and stone-throwing anarchists and riot police. More than two dozen people were injured, including two police officers.

Greece has been grappling with a severe financial crisis for more than a year and was rescued from bankruptcy by a euro110 billion international bailout package in May 2010. In return, the government imposed strict austerity measures, including cutting public sector salaries, freezing pensions and increasing taxes.

But it has struggled to meet revenue targets during a recession, and the government is soon due to unveil new cutbacks aimed at saving an estimated euro23 billion ($33 billion) through 2015.

Greek default could have dramatic consequences

Source: Beta

STRASBOURG -- European officials expressed concern on Wednesday about Greeces indebtedness and eurozone crisis that could have "dramatic" consequences for Greece.

A Greek public sector worker stands behind a banner reading, 'no' (Beta/AP

They added that Europe and the rest of the world would also face the consequences.

"Whatever way you look at it, it is absolutely certain that a default and/or exit of Greece from the euro zone would carry dramatic economic and social and political costs, not only for Greece but also for all other euro area member states and EU member states, as well as for our global partners," EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn told the European Parliament.

Rehn believes that the EU needs to implement a bigger integration which would enable faster and more efficient decision making.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso described the crisis as "the most serious challenge of a generation. This is a fight... for the economic and political future of Europe."

He called on all eurozone member states to implement measures adopted on July 21 and to implement the second bailout plan for Greece worth more than EUR 160bn, which is currently halted by Finland, Slovakia and the Netherlands.

Barroso added that Greece needed to implement its economic reform program aimed at decreasing the countrys budget deficit.

Default World Court rules Greece was wrong to block Macedonia's bid for NATO membership in 2008

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - The world court ruled Monday that Greece was wrong to block Macedonia's bid to join NATO in 2008 because of a long-running dispute over the fledgling country's use of the name "Macedonia."

In a 15-1 ruling, the court found that Greece's veto breached a 1995 deal under which Greece had agreed not to block Macedonia's membership in international organizations if it used the name "The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" while the matter was submitted to U.N. mediation. More than 15 years later, discussions over the name are still unresolved.

Although the question of Macedonia's name is sometimes seen as superficial by outsiders, it is a matter of deep concern for both sides. The young country has used the name in one form or another since shortly after World War II, when it was a province of Yugoslavia, but Greece sees use of the name as historically inaccurate at best and a potential threat to its territorial integrity at worst.

Monday's victory is largely symbolic since the court didn't order Greece to alter its stance in the future.

The U.N.'s highest court, formally known as the International Court of Justice, found that the ruling itself "constitutes appropriate satisfaction" for The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, said presiding Judge Hisashi Owada, reading the written decision.

But the ruling does lends moral weight to the small country's protests that Greece's moves to block it from joining NATO and the European Union are unfair.

Ordinary Macedonians appeared pleased.

"Finally, a little justice for Macedonia!" said housewife Marina Stevcevska, 49, after hearing of the ruling.

"After years of disappointments for this country, finally we have received a good news, somebody to tell Greece that it is doing wrong, that is enough", she said.

Meanwhile, about 150 members of an ultra-right group in held a demonstration in central Athens protesting the court decision, waving flags and chanting nationalist slogans. A few dozen people took part in a similar protest in the northern city of Thessaloniki, shouting "Greece belongs to the Greeks."

Outside the courtroom, Greece's Dutch Ambassador Ioannis Economides urged Macedonia "to resist using today's decision to subvert the negotiations," and NATO Chief Fogh Rasmussen said in Brussels that Macedonia still won't be admitted to the alliance until the name issue is resolved.

Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov said Greece should "respect the judgment of the International Court of Justice."

"For the time being, we do not want to look through the categories of winners and losers," he said, promising to continue the negotiations.

Though colloquial use of calling the country "Macedonia" has grown, U.N. documents refer to it consistently as "The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia," while Greece refers to it by the acronym "FYROM" apparently to avoid even mentioning the word "Macedonia" in relation to the country. The country calls itself the "Republic of Macedonia."

U.N. envoy Matthew Nimetz said Monday he had urged both countries "to view this event as an opportunity to think constructively about their mutual relationship and to consider a renewed initiative to reach a definitive solution to the 'name' issue."

There was little opposition from Athens to the Yugoslav territory using the name Macedonia until it declared independence in 1991. The country occupies some of the territory in the region that was known as Macedonia after the conquests of Alexander the Great in the 4th century B.C.

But over the centuries the region has undergone such complete ethnic and cultural changes as to render use of the name nonsensical, Greece argues not to mention that Greece has its own province called Macedonia.

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is now composed mostly of a people who speak a Slavic language similar to Bulgarian, not Greek and Bulgaria was a bitter military enemy to Greece in the first half of the 20th century.

Greece is concerned that if the country uses the name Macedonia, that will eventually lead it, possibly together with Bulgaria, to stake claims to parts of modern Greece.

Macedonia has been friendly to NATO since its independence, allowing U.S. troops to use its territory as a staging ground during the Yugoslav wars. NATO clashed with Serbia under the rule of Slobodan Milosevic, even as Greece sympathized with Belgrade due to historical strategic and religious ties.

Under the 1995 interim agreement, Greece dropped economic sanctions against Macedonia in exchange for the temporary compromise on the name. Macedonia also stopped using an ancient Macedonian flag and amended articles of its constitution which could be seen as hinting at claims to Greek territory.

Greek police sweep illegal immigrants from streets

Source: Tanjug

ATHENS -- Greek police on Friday started detaining illegal immigrants squatting in abandoned buildings in downtown Athens.

The police have also announced that they will continue the operation on a daily basis.

The operation followed after the Greek authorities announced that they would open centers across Greece where illegal immigrants would be placed until the authorities decided whether they would be deported back to their countries of granted asylum.

The plan is to place the illegal immigrants in closed centers, Greek Interior Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis told Ioannina-based Sky Radio.

According to him, illegal immigration represents a big problem and Greece cannot turn a blind eye anymore. He added that the problem was visible every day in downtown Athens.

Chrisochoidis assessed that the exact number of illegal immigrants in the country could be as high as one million. He added that Greece had to undertake emergency measures to curb illegal immigration so the country would not be thrown out of the Schengen zone.

The evaluation will be made in June and if we leave Schengen, it will be a huge step back, the interior minister concluded.

Default Greek unrest after pensioner suicide beside parliament

4/5/12
"Protesters have clashed with riot police in the Greek capital, Athens, hours after a pensioner shot himself dead outside parliament.

The 77-year-old man killed himself in the city's busy Syntagma Square on Wednesday morning.

Greek media reported he had left a suicide note accusing the government of cutting his pension to nothing.

Flowers have been laid at the spot where he died and tributes have been paid online.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the square outside parliament on Wednesday evening, the scene of many large protests in recent months.

Violence erupted, with petrol bombs hurled at police, who fired tear gas in response.

Depression and suicides are reported to have increased in Greece as the country introduces tough austerity measures to deal with huge debts.

Drastic austerity measures have been imposed on Greece to meet the terms of a huge eurozone financial bailout needed to save the country from bankruptcy.

Thousands of civil service jobs have been cut, taxes raised and there have been reductions in pay, benefits and pensions.

Suicides increased by 18% in 2010 from the previous year, according to Reuters news agency. The number of suicides in Athens alone rose over 25% last year.

Greek party with neo-Nazi slant poised for seats in parliament
Foreign Editor, in Athens

"We want Greece for the Greek people," says Costas Alexandrakis, an activist and teacher who works as administrator of the headquarters and book shop of Golden Dawn, a Greek far-right organisation. Foreign Editor, in Athens

Much of the symbolism and political message of Golden Dawn puts the blame on migrants

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is a major issue in the Greek general election and if opinion polls are to be believed, a party with more than a whiff of neo-Nazism about it is poised to enter parliament for the first time after the May 6th vote.

Officially, immigrants amount to about 10 per cent of the Greek population about a million people. However, in the absence of reliable statistics, many believe the figure is higher.

Loukas Tsoukalis, president of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy, suggests it is closer to 15 per cent that is more than 1.5 million people in a host population of 11 million.

The net effect, the ghettoisation of a large swathe of central Athens for instance and a popular desire to apportion blame for the crisis engulfing Greece, has provided fertile territory for Golden Dawn, a far-right organisation with a penchant for black shirts and neo-Nazi paraphernalia.

It was founded in 1993 by Nikolaos Michaloliakos (55), a far-right activist since elected to Athens Council. A fan of the junta that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974, Michaloliakos has fond memories of meeting the deposed colonels while in jail, where he was twice once for assaulting journalists and once for illegally carrying guns and explosives while also serving in the Greek army, from which he was then cashiered.

The centre of Athens explains Golden Dawn, says Tsoukalis. Immigration is now out of control; they [people from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and other parts of central Asia] keep on flowing in every day, through the islands and across the border with Turkey.

So, after the election, we will have, for the first time in 38 years, the extreme right in parliament which will not be a pleasant thing . . . It is going to be an awful parliament, a zoo. In a parliament of 300, you [will] have up to 60 who are screaming.

There is no screaming in the offices of Golden Dawn, located on the edge of the heavily immigrant area of northwest Athens. A huge banner hanging over the second-floor balcony announces, in deep red and black, the partys presence. The partys symbol, a variation of the ancient Greek meandros, the decorative meandering line often used as a border, is also on display. It evokes comparison with the swastika, the Nazi symbol.

Several young men in their 30s hanging around the pavement ignore me as I enter the building. Inside the narrow hall, there are half a dozen motorcycle helmets but no bikes visible. There are Greek flags furled around poles and what looks like a home-made riot shield. The office, a large open-plan room, is crowded with about 15 people, all men bar two, and most, but not all, in their 20s or 30s.

There are three tables and chairs and activity that mirrors any constituency office during an election campaign, but the posters and books on display tell a different story.

Most of the books for sale have neo-Nazi symbols on their covers. Most are in Greek and are historical but they include one titled White Power. Another sports on its cover Josef Goebbels, Hitlers minister for propaganda; still another has a picture of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, commander of the German- Italian Afrikakorps in the second World War.

Party T-shirts and baseball-style caps are on sale. So too are CDs by Der Stmer (German for The Striker), a Greek heavy metal band, whose members are all in Golden Dawn and who take their name from the most virulently anti-Jewish newspaper published in Germany between 1924 and 1945.

Did the Holocaust happen, I ask Costas Alexandrakis (33), the mild-mannered, smiling activist who runs the office and says his day job is home schooling maths teaching. The reply is, well, meandering . . .

We want to see history taught not in the politically correct way, he begins. David Irvine [the British writer and Holocaust denier] is a good historian but after the second World War, the victors wrote history. We want to see history in all its views . . .

Yes, but did the Holocaust happen?

Look, for the Holocaust right now in Europe, even if I say the Holocaust didnt happen, I will go to jail. Thats not democracy, thats not how history should be taught.

But did it happen? Look, he adds, many Jews died in the second World War in concentration camps but the whole thing is about the numbers. You want me to count them?

What does Golden Dawn want for Greece? We want Greece for the Greek people, he says. Greece no longer belongs to Greeks but to bankers and immigrants. Greek people that live in the centre of Athens are afraid to walk after seven [at night]. They [immigrants] kill and rape, they steal. Look around, soon other areas will fall.

So what is to happen? They must go home, to Afghanistan, to Pakistan, Libya, Algeria I dont know. When I see a Greek child, a little Greek child, I dont care where they [the immigrants] go; I just want him out.

Alexandrakis does not believe in democracy, as most people seem to understand it. The politicians lie and steal from me and my people. I dont believe in this democracy. Real democracy is telling the truth. Nor does he believe in capitalism.

I feel socialist but not Marxist, he says. I dont believe in syndicalism [a system of economic theory involving trade union collectivism and state economic corporatism that found adherents in 1930s Italy, France and Spain] or in fascism. I believe in co-operation, in one union for all workers.

I am a nationalist, I am a socialist but I am not German so I am not a national socialist.

Golden Dawn and Alexandrakiss solution to the current crisis is for Greece to remain in the European Union and the euro.

Leaving is not feasible now but we must make Greek people work go back to industry and agriculture and make our economy ourselves, not with tourism.

Golden Dawn says it has about 10,000 members and more every day, says Alexandrakis. When opinion polls ceased on April 20th, it was standing consistently above 5 per cent enough comfortably to win a dozen seats or more.

Default World Stocks Drop As Worries Over Country Intensify

MILAN — World stock markets dropped sharply Monday (5/14/12) as worries intensified over the condition of the eurozone and whether Greece is edging towards exiting the single currency union.

In Athens, Greek party leaders struggled for a ninth day to form a coalition government. As the political wrangling dragged on, markets contemplated the threat that the crisis-stricken country would not meet the terms of its bailout and drop out of the currency club.

President Karolos Papoulias' efforts to broker a deal among party leaders have failed since May 6 elections yielded no outright winner. Talks were to resume on Monday, but chances of success have been diminished after one leftist party pulled out of the talks, leading the country one step closer to new elections – and bringing its continued membership in the euro into serious doubt.

Default Greek depositors withdraw 700 million euros from the nation's banking system

quote

U.S. Stocks faded in the final hour of trading Tuesday to finish lower following news that Greek depositors withdrew 700 million euros from the nation's banking system and after Greece's leaders failed to agree on a coalition government.

"I think people need to prepare for the eventual removal of Greece from the EU and investors are getting ahead of that before they're forced to," said Matthew McCormick, vice president and portfolio manager at Bahl & Gaynor Investment Counsel on CNBC's "Closing Bell." "It's a political market and an event-driven market."
