Dems reach out to Lou Dobbs to build backing for immigration reform

By Alexander Bolton - 01/28/10

Senate Democrats have reached out to former CNN anchor and prominent illegal-immigration opponent Lou Dobbs in an effort to build broad bipartisan support for immigration reform.

Winning the support of Dobbs, who became a prominent critic of illegal immigration and proposals to grant amnesty to illegal workers, could provide a significant boost to reform efforts.

And even though the victory of Sen.-elect Scott Brown (R) in Massachusetts appears to have diminished the chances of passing far-reaching, controversial immigration reform, Democrats are not giving up.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is spearheading the Democrats’ effort to put together a comprehensive reform bill, met with Dobbs on Wednesday.

“We’re meeting with all different kinds of groups, trying to get everybody together to come out for one bill,” Schumer said.

Dobbs built up a large viewership for his show, “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” by striking a conservative populist stance and frequently criticizing the flood of illegal workers into the nation.

Dobbs was an outspoken critic of waiving penalties against illegal workers but has since said that government officials should consider legalizing illegal immigrants “under certain conditions."

Schumer noted that Dobbs, who left CNN in November, is “changing his views on immigration.”

The third-ranking member of the Democratic leadership said he is looking for two Republicans to co-sponsor legislation.

“We have to have this bill be a bipartisan bill [and have] two Democrats and two Republicans to introduce it,” Schumer said. “We’re not there yet; we’re still working on getting our Republicans.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he supports efforts to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws, but he declined to set a timeline.

“You get into trouble by setting deadlines,” Reid said. “It’s something we’re committed to do, and we’ll do it as soon as we can.”

Senate Democratic leaders say they have discussed their strategy for immigration reform with President Barack Obama.

Legalizing millions of mexishits will pretty much put the nail in the coffin here.

The "browning" of America will accelerate. And when I say "browning", I mean making America an even more shitty place to live. In the event of a breakdown in social order, white people will be attacked by non-whites whose numbers are increasing.

Look to the 2001 economic collapse in Argentina for what's in store for you.

Here is an example of how quickly things can go to shit:

November 6 2001 - Argentina conducts a second debt swap, exchanging $60 billion of bonds with an average interest rate of 11-12% for extended maturity notes carrying only 7% interest rate. International bond rating agencies consider it an effective default.

November 30 2001 - A run on the banks begins, with central bank reserves falling by $2 billion in one day. President de la Rua imposes $1,000 per month limitation on personal bank withdrawals.

December 1 2001 -Protests begin over bank withdrawal limitations.

December 5 2001 - The IMF withholds $1.24 billion loan installment, citing Argentina’s repeated inability to meet fiscal targets.

December 7 2001 - Argentina announces it can no longer guarantee payment on foreign debt.

December 13 2001 - The government announces that the unemployment rate reaches near record high of 18%. Unions call nationwide strike.

December 14 2001 - Supermarket looting begins.

December 19 2001 - Rioting spreads to major cities over deep budget cuts. The government declares a state of siege. Minister of Economy Domingo Cavallo resigns.

December 20 2001 - President de la Rua resigns in the wake of continued rioting, leaving 28 people dead.

December 21 2001 - Congress accepts President de la Rua’s resignation. Senate President Ramon Puerta is named provisional president for 48 hours.

December 23 2001 - Congress appoints San Luis Governor Adolfo Rodriguez as interim president until elections can be held in March 2002.

December 26 2001 - The liquidity standards for banks are relaxed. Rodriguez Saa announces a new economic plan based on:
1) suspension of payments on public debt;
2) new jobs creation program; and
3) creation of new currency (the Argentino) to begin circulating in January 2002 and not to be convertible to the U.S. dollar.
