Former Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexey Zhuravko reportedly killed in Russian-occupied Kherson



FOLLOWING a Ukrainian Armed Forces HIMARS attack on a hotel in the Russian-occupied city of Kherson, former deputy of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Alexey Zhuravko has reportedly been killed, as reported on Sunday, September 25.

According to several local reports, Alexey Zhuravko was killed after Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a HIMARS attack on a hotel in the city of Kherson in the Kherson region.

“A hotel where civilians were staying was shelled by the Ukrainian armed forces from HIMARS MLRS. As a result of the shelling there are two dead,” the correspondent was told by the emergency services.

An RT film crew was in the hotel, the operator was crushed by plates, he survived and was practically not injured. The explosion also damaged cars standing next to the hotel.

As noted by both Ukraine and Russian news outlets, Zhuravko represented the Party of Regions in the 5th and 6th convocations. In 2014, he moved to Rashka, and this year he returned to Kherson and “collaborated with the occupiers.”

According to some reports, many Russian servicemen returned from captivity castrated. Some guys committed suicide on their return home. Only after an autopsy in the morgue did the parents find out that their child was castrated in captivity. Russian media are silent about this for ethical reasons. The Russian side could not reveal all the horrific detail on the tortures as the prisoners exchange was carried out right after the announcement of the partial mobilization in Russia.

As for the Ukrainian prisoners, in total 215 were released. 118 National guardsmen, including 108 servicemen of the Nazi Azov regiment. Among them, there are notorious Azov commanders Denis Prokopenko (Radish), Sergei Volynsky (Volyn) and Svyatoslav Palamar (Kalina).

Among the exchanged Azov fighters, there are Konstantin (Fox) Nikitenko and Nikolai (Frost) Kushch, who surrendered at Azovstal. They were found guilty by the tribunal of shooting civilians and Russian prisoners. Frost “became famous” by sharing videos on the Internet. On of them showed a Russian tankman being shot in the stomach.

The exchange fund also included at least 10 foreign mercenaries, among them Britons Sean Pinner and Aiden Aslin, as well as Moroccan citizen Saadoun Brahim. All three were captured in April, and in the summer were sentenced to death in the DPR. The DPR claimed that in accordance with international humanitarian law, mercenaries cannot be considered combatants and claim the status of prisoners of war. Thus, they could not be exchanged. Among the foreigners released from captivity, there were five Britons, two US citizens, one citizen of Morocco, Sweden and Croatia.

The recent exchange is a complete media failure for the Russian side.

The Joe Biden administration has sent several warnings to Russia via backchannels regarding the possible use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the Washington Post reports. The White House’s messages to Russia have been intentionally nondescript to foster uncertainty in Moscow about what the US would do if Russia deployed its ultimate weapon.

The White House has sent the message several times since the war in Ukraine started, according to the US officials who spoke with the Post. The White House’s communications with the Kremlin have been intentionally vague.

The Biden administration believes these nonspecific threats will deter Russia through “strategic ambiguity.” “Strategic ambiguity” is an intentionally unclear policy that causes the enemy not to act out of fear it could cross a red line without knowing it.

For nearly 50 years, the US maintained a policy of “strategic ambiguity” toward Taiwan. By refusing to commit to defending the island, Washington has deterred Taipei from declaring independence. At the same time, suggesting it could defend Taiwan has deterred China from acting more aggressively against the island.

However, Biden has taken steps towards abandoning “strategic ambiguity” towards Taiwan. Since taking office, Biden has said he would go to war for Taipei four times.

President Vladimir Putin warned on Monday that he could order a nuclear strike to defend Russian territory. Putin’s threat was Moscow’s most direct warning it could deploy nukes. “If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will without doubt use all available means to protect Russia and our people – this is not a bluff,” Putin said.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev appeared to expand this nuclear umbrella to Ukrainian territories Moscow plans to annex. The Kremlin planned a series of referendums in areas of Ukraine under its control. If the vote goes as expected, those regions will request entrance into Russia, which Moscow will accept.

The Post says it is unclear if the White House reissued the threat after Putin’s statement this week. In January, Moscow and Washington reaffirmed the statement, “nuclear war can never be won, and must never be fought.”

EU has "serious questions" as Serbia enters regular consultations with Russia

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The EU on Monday denounced a decision by Serbia to hold regular foreign policy consultations with Russia, saying the move raised "serious questions" at a time when Brussels has told membership candidates not to continue business as usual with Moscow.



Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Serbian counterpart Nikola Selakovic signed a document on Friday dubbed a "plan on consultations".

Selakovic said that the plan envisages consultations on bilateral and multilateral activities, though there was nothing on security policies in it. Serbian opposition parties criticised the document.

Serbia, which was bombed by NATO two decades ago but now seeks to join the European Union, has long struggled to balance historically close ties with Russia against aspirations for economic and political integration with the West.

Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Monday, Peter Stano, a spokesperson for the EU's executive commission, noted that the new Russian-Serbian consultation document had been signed just days after Moscow announced a mobilisation for the Ukraine war and began to stage votes to annex territory it has captured.

The Serbia-Russia agreement was "a very clear sign about their intention to strengthen their ties", Stano said. "And this is raising serious questions".

The EU had been very clear with countries seeking to join that relations with Russia under current circumstances could not be business as usual, he said. Serbia had declared EU accession a strategic priority, which implied "alignment with European policies, including on foreign policy issues," he added.

"We are taking this very seriously and we are following this up," he said.

Serbian officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Stano's remarks.

Although Serbia has condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine at the United Nations, it has refused to join sanctions against Moscow.
