It's funny as hell, but there's truth to it. We do OWE the criminal respect enough to accept that HE and he alone is responsible for his act. And to respond to him based on that vital truth. For our own sake, the victim and his society, we show just how much we're willing to tolerate. Why even have a society if you can murder people and be back on the street in a few years? That's a joke.

One of more of the famous dystopian novelists predicted in the future all crime would be treated as illness rather than decision, well, we're already there.

Everyone likes to think he's refined, and pat himself on the back for it. But there are people in every culture and nation who must be killed because, well, there's nothing else to do with them. Officers say 22-year-old Christopher Lane was shot dead in what Police Chief Dan Ford described as a thrill killing. Ford said a 17-year-old defendant told police the three teenagers were bored and shot Lane for "the fun of it."

Two boys, ages 15 and 16, were charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bond. Bond was set at $1 million for the 17-year-old, who was also accused of using a vehicle while a weapon was discharged.

The 17-year-old wept in court after he tried to speak and was cut off by the judge.
