Massive rally in Brussels over cost of living

More than 10,000 demonstrators took to the streets of the Belgian capital to protest against skyrocketing prices

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Brussels on Wednesday for a “national day of action” to demand higher wages and lower energy prices. According to police, over 10,000 people descended on the Belgian capital as it was revealed that some 64% of the country’s citizens are afraid they may not be able to pay their bills.

The demonstrations were organized by Belgian trade unions, who claim that the average energy bill for families in the country has already increased threefold to more than €700 ($691) a month.

“It’s not that we don’t want to pay, but we can’t pay,” said Thierry Bodson, chairman of the General Labor Federation of Belgium, while speaking to thousands of union activists at the Place de la Monnaie. While the average Belgian family only makes €2,500 ($2,468) a month, Bodson pointed out that it’s “absolutely impossible” for someone below that line to pay their bills.

Police shootout in Antwerp with far-right group leaves one dead

Wednesday, 28 September 2022

Shots were exchanged during a search carried out by police in the early hours of the morning at an address in Merksem, in the province of Antwerp, reports RTBF. One suspect has been killed by the police.

The police operation targeted a small group with suspected links to violent far-right extremism. Investigators searched the address looking for weapons, notably homemade weapons. In addition to suspected arms trafficking, the suspects are also believed to have attempted to commit a terrorist attack, RTBF believes.

The federal prosecutor’s office states that a total of 10 searches were conducted across the province of Antwerp this morning, turning up a large number of illegal firearms. The circumstances of the shoot-out with police officers is currently being investigated by federal investigators.

Antwerp is currently experiencing a wave of violence linked to organised criminal gangs. The police have promised to get tough on violent criminals, giving local authorities and police forces new powers to crack down on organised crime.

This criminal gang is not believed to be linked to the kidnap plot against Belgian Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne.

A report published last year warned that right-wing extremism is growing at an alarming rate in Belgium. While Jihadism is still the leading threat, an annual report by the Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (OCAD) showed that the threat from far-right extremists had witnessed a "steep rise."

Europe faces deindustrialization and social unrest – Belgian PM

Soaring energy prices will lead to drastic long-term consequences on the continent, Alexander De Croo told the Financial Times

Europe could soon face a significant reduction in industrial activity and social unrest unless something is done to lower energy prices before winter sets in, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has warned.

In an interview with the Financial Times published on Thursday, he said that unless there was an intervention in the gas markets, “we are risking massive deindustrialization of the European continent and the long-term consequences that might actually be very deep.”

De Croo insisted on a multi-layered approach to the gas crisis, which he says should include a hard price cap on Russian natural gas, negotiations with suppliers such as Norway and Algeria, and a “dynamic” limit on the price of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which he suggests could be set slightly above prices in the US or Asia to ensure continued flows to Europe.

Belgian PM warns of blackouts if energy prices capped

By Marine Strauss

BRUSSELS, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo warned a cap on electricity prices called for by the opposition could lead to power being sold in other markets and blackouts in Belgium.

Its government has been pushing for a Europe-wide cap on electricity prices since March, but so far a common approach to tackle soaring energy costs has eluded the continent.

"If we capped the price of electricity in Belgium, electricity would be sold in neighbouring countries where prices would not be at the same level," De Croo told public broadcaster RTBF" late on Thursday. "There is a risk of a blackout because the electricity would be sold elsewhere."

Federal Government announces funding for 3 LGBTQ historical projects

Tuesday, 25 October 2022

Belgium's State Secretary for Equal Opportunities Sarah Schlitz has announced that over €300,000 will be allocated to two studies and an exhibition on LGBTQ history.

The first research will focus on the history of lesbian movements in Belgium, with €100,000 to be awarded to a researcher/institution and a further sum of €149,000 of support for the Archives and Research Center for Women's History (CARHIF).

The second research supported by the Federal Government has received €30,000 to quantify the extent of the 'anti-gender' movements in Belgium which attempt to roll back gender equality as well as the rights of the LGBTQ community, stated Schlitz's cabinet in a press release.

A further €60,000 will be allocated to the exhibition "Homosexuals and lesbians in Nazi Europe" set to take place in the spring of 2023 at the Kazerne Dossin – a former Belgian army barracks in the Flemish city of Mechelen that was used by the Nazis as a transit camp to transport Jewish and Roma people to the concentration camps in Auschwitz-Birkenau, Buchenwald and Ravensbrück.

The site of the Kazerne is currently integrated into the Memorial, Museum and Documentation Center on Holocaust and Human Rights.

Belgium's record high inflation won't decrease until early next year

Monday, 31 October 2022
By Thomas Moller-Nielsen

Belgium's soaring annual inflation rate rose to 12,27% this October – the highest rate since June 1975 – with many economists predicting that inflation will not decrease until the start of next year.

"Last March, when I mentioned the figure of 12%, everyone treated me like a pessimist," economist Bruno Colmant told L'Echo. "Now we are here."

Colmant added: "We should finish this year at [around] 12% inflation. Next year, inflation will probably be around 6% or 7%, which gives 20% inflation over two years."

Policeman killed, colleague wounded in knife attack in Brussels

Thursday, 10 November 2022

Police from the Brussels-North zone were on patrol on Rue d’Aerschot in Schaerbeek, Brussels, when they were attacked by a knife-wielding individual at around 7:15 PM on Thursday evening. One officer was wounded in the neck and has since died of his injuries.

According to various media reports, the perpetrator shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he attacked the patrolling police officers, but this information was not immediately confirmed by the public prosecutor’s office.

A perimeter has been set up and an investigation launched by the prosecutor’s office.

“Our police officers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of our citizens. Today’s tragedy demonstrates this once again,” Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Twitter on Thursday evening following the knife attack, in which a police officer was killed and another wounded.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased officer," the Prime Minister said. "My sincere hope is that his hospitalised colleague will be fine."

Belgium ‘fed you, gave you jobs’ and you ‘ransack it?’ – Belgian influencer rages after Moroccans riot over World Cup win

“To see such things in our f**king country, in our Belgium, which has taken you in and which you trash as much as possible after winning against Belgium?”

After Morocco’s shock World Cup victory over Belgium, a Belgian TIkTok influencer is questioning why fans of Morocco’s national football team, who live in Belgium, rioted and destroyed the cities that took them in as migrants.

“Morocco has won. It has won against Belgium… You live in Belgium, but you are ransacking Belgium after your team won. Well done! Respect! But why? Why? I fail to understand,” TikTok user Nanavk3 said. “To see such things in our f**king country, in our Belgium, which has taken you in and which you trash as much as possible after winning against Belgium?

“In the very country that has accepted you, given you f**king lodging, fed you, gave you jobs, and you, you win, and you have nothing better to do than to trash Belgium and ransack it?”

Belgium charges four people in European Parliament corruption probe

By Philip Blenkinsop

BRUSSELS, Dec 11 (Reuters) - A Belgian judge charged four people on Sunday over allegedly receiving money and gifts from a Gulf state to influence decisions in the European Parliament, accusations that have caused consternation in Brussels.

Prosecutors searched 16 houses and seized 600,000 euros ($631,800) in Brussels on Friday as part of an investigation into money laundering and corruption.

Six people were initially detained. Four have been charged and two released, prosecutors said in a statement. They did not name any of those involved.

Thousands protest cost-of-living crisis in EU country

The rally in Belgium's capital gathered some 16,500 people, according to the police

Thousands took to the streets in Brussels on Friday to demand a freeze on spiking energy prices, and better pay amid high inflation in Belgium and the EU.

Temperatures in the Belgian capital fell below zero Celsius on the day, but the rally still attracted more than 16,500 people, according to police.

The action was supported by leading trade unions, disrupting public services and transport systems in Brussels and elsewhere across the country. The capital’s airport said that some flights had to be canceled.

Belgian companies face economy 'tsunami' of up to €55 billion

Friday, 6 January 2023
By Thomas Moller-Nielsen

The President of the Federation of Belgian Companies (FEB) has warned that Belgian businesses are facing an economic "tsunami" of up to €55 billion in the coming months as a consequence of soaring energy and labour costs, Belga News Agency has reported.

"We are clearly not in a 'business as usual' situation and the government must realise the seriousness of the situation," FEB President Pieter Timmermans said.

FEB Chief Economist Edward Roosens similarly noted that virtually all sectors of the Belgian economy expect a decline in profits over the next six months. He also predicted that total labour costs will rise by 18%, or €25-30 billion, while energy bills will grow by "three to four times," or €10-15 billion: thus yielding a potential cost increase of up to €55 billion.

Charleroi declares itself an 'anti-fascist city'

Tuesday, 24 January 2023

Charleroi’s municipal council on Monday adopted a motion to make it “an anti-fascist city." The motion also enshrined the existence of an “anti-fascist coalition” composed of the town’s political parties, trade unions, associations and members of civil society.

This “anti-fascist coalition” is the result of discussions that started amid a general rise in far-right ideas and following the incidents that occurred on 25 January 2020 in Charleroi around the mobilisation of an anti-fascist front against the holding of a meeting of a new far-right party in the metropolis.

On that day, according to the anti-fascist demonstrators, the police had used sprays, fire pumps and even batons to disperse them. This caused a certain amount of commotion, including within the city’s political class.

The motion gives the coalition some general objectives, such as “to prevent by all legal means the dissemination of statements inciting hatred, racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, discrimination related to sexual orientation” or “openly fascist and xenophobic, on the territory of Charleroi.”

Another objective is to relay information “when it concerns an event likely to incite hatred, racism, anti-Semitism [or] sexism,” or “openly fascist or xenophobic.”

Grave of Flemish Nazi collaborator destroyed for second time in six months

Tuesday, 31 January 2023

The grave of August Borms, who was executed after World War II for collaborating with the Nazis, has been destroyed for the second time in half a year – prompting Filip Dewinter, a member of the Flemish far-right Vlaams Belang party, to ask for camera surveillance at the cemetery.

At the historic cemetery in the Antwerp district of Merksem, the grave of August Borms has been destroyed again. About half a year ago (in June 2022), this happened as well. Then, the City of Antwerp took on the restoration costs.

Despite previous racism controversies, Aalst Carnival participants don blackface

Tuesday, 21 February 2023

After two years without an Aalst Carnival parade due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year's edition of the controversial three-day event again raised eyebrows as some participants were photographed proudly donning blackface.

This weekend, the Sunday parade (called the 'Shrove parade') of Aalst Carnival drew some 105,000 spectators – a record according to the city. While the city announced the event's first day went off without any significant incidents, photos taken of a number of participants have caused controversy online.

Belgium freezes highest amount of Russian assets of all EU countries

Saturday, 25 February 2023
By Lauren Walker

Since the start of the Russian war in Ukraine, the Belgian treasury has frozen €58 billion worth of Russian assets, the highest amount of any EU Member State.

As part of the sanctions packages issued by the European Commission — the 27 EU countries agreed on the tenth on Friday night — Belgium has prided itself in applying these sanctions quickly and strictly. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, it has frozen €58 billion worth of Russian assets and blocked €191 billion euros of Russian financial transactions.

"The war in Ukraine is lasting longer than we all thought and feared. A strict follow-up of the economic sanctions measures against Russia, therefore, remains crucial," said Vincent Van Peteghem, the Federal Minister of Finance on Friday 24 February, marking exactly one year since Russia invaded Ukrainian territory.

"I am proud that we can count on FPS Finance working on this every day and achieving top results at the European level. Ukraine and our European partners can continue to count on Belgium's strict implementation and application of these sanctions."

Colonial statues in Halle given 'critical interpretation' but not removed

Tuesday, 7 March 2023

The Flemish city of Halle has decided not to remove but instead to adapt two controversial colonial references in one of its parks as a "reminder of the role Belgium played as a coloniser."

In Halle's renovated Albert park stands a statue and a monument dating back to the colonial period: a bust of Leopold II and the monument 'Homage to the Colonial Pioneers'. Both have both stood there since 1953, but since Sunday last week, they have been given a new makeover and interpretation.

Great replacement conspiracy: Protesters call for far-right debate at KU Leuven to be scrapped

13 march 2023

A group of academics, students, civil society organisations and residents of the city of Leuven is protesting a debate that will take place featuring Filip Dewinter of the Flemish far-right Vlaams Belang party. The topic is whether migration is an opportunity or represents a "great replacement" – a well-known far-right conspiracy theory.

Given Dewinter's political history, the event – scheduled to take place in a KU Leuven auditorium on Monday 13 March – is set to feature a number of divisive far-right tropes. Dewinter is due to debate with Maurits Vande Reyde of the Flemish liberal Open VLD party. But in an open letter, protesters argue that Dewinter's promotion of the great replacement conspiracy theory is "dangerous and racist."
