Ukraine to get howitzers from neighbor

The self-propelled guns will be supplied to Kiev as part of a commercial contract, Slovakia’s Defense Ministry says

Bratislava will supply Kiev with eight Zuzana 2 howitzers to “help innocent Ukrainians in their difficult fight” against Russia, Slovakia’s Defense Ministry announced on Thursday.

Sending the self-propelled artillery systems to Ukraine is “a responsible gesture for Slovakia as a neighboring country,” the ministry said in a Facebook post.

Despite using the word “help,” it pointed out that the howitzers would be supplied as part of a commercial contract, meaning that Kiev will have to pay for the hardware. The value of the deal hasn’t been disclosed.

SaS pulls out of coalition deal, calling on the PM to sack Matovič

The coalition party is prepared to leave the government if no new deal is on the table by late summer.

Peter Dlhopolec
staff writer & podcaster

Prime Minister Eduard Heger has placed the stability of his coalition government at stake due to his reluctance to remove Finance Minister Igor Matovič from his post.

One of the coalition parties, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), has announced that it will no longer accept the existing coalition deal starting from July 6, and demands the sacking of Matovič, the least trusted minister according to polls, from the government.

Ukraine resumes Russian oil flows to Hungary, Slovakia as bills settle

Reuters

Aug 11 (Reuters) - Oil flows have resumed from Russia to Hungary and Slovakia via the Ukrainian section of the Druzhba oil pipeline, Ukraine's Naftogaz said on Thursday, days after being suspended over payment issues.

Naftogaz's JSC Ukrtransnafta pipeline operator said it resumed operations upon receiving payment from Hungarian oil company MOL on Wednesday evening.

Ukraine had halted Russian oil shipments via Druzhba on Aug. 4 after Western sanctions prevented it from receiving transit fees from Moscow.

Slovakia beats neighbours on LGBT+ rights

But gender protocol that helped in new ranking recently suspended.

Compiled by Spectator staff

Slovakia has beaten its neighbours in a new ranking of LGBT+ rights thanks to rules on gender recognition - which have, though, been suspended since the survey information was collected.

The Rainbow Europe survey from LGBT+ rights group ILGA Europe ranked the legal and policy situations for LGBT+ people in 49 countries across Europe between January and December 2021.

Slovakia scored best among countries in the Visegrad Group, which also includes the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland, with an overall 34 percent in total LGBT+ rights score, despite the country having no formal legal recognition of same-sex marriage or civil unions, the Euractiv.sk website noted.

Google to launch campaign against misinformation in Slovakia

Short clips designed to "vaccinate" social media users against harmful content

Google subsidiary Jigsaw is to launch a campaign in Slovakia aimed at combating misinformation about Ukrainian refugees.

The campaign, which will begin next week and will also be run in Poland and the Czech Republic, is based on research by British psychologists from Cambridge and Bristol universities.
(...)
Slovakia has had a problem with Russian propaganda for many years, but the war in Ukraine prompted the government to take action, and soon after the invasion various misinformation websites were blocked . However, these outlets were back online within months.

Slovakia may stop power exports to EU without more help on energy costs

By Jan Lopatka

Sept 30 (Reuters) - Slovakia could halt electricity supplies to other European Union countries if it doesn't get more help to cope with soaring energy costs, its prime minister warned on Friday, saying measures agreed by the bloc so far were not sufficient.

EU energy ministers agreed on Friday a package including a levy on fossil fuel companies' surplus profits for this year or next, another levy on excess revenues low-cost power producers make from soaring electricity costs, and a mandatory 5% cut in electricity use during peak price periods.

Thousands marched the streets of Bratislava to say no to hate

Sorry that you cannot feel safe here in Slovakia: President Zuzana Čaputová to the LGBT+ community.

Thousands of people have gathered in Bratislava for the march to condemn hatred against LBGT+ people organised by the Inakosť (Otherness) initiative that advocates for the rights of LGBT+ community in Slovakia.

The march was staged as a reaction to the premeditated attack, in which a 19-year-old radicalised man killed two gay people on the evening of October 12, 2022 outside Tepláreň, one of the very few LGBT+ spots in the city. Police ponder terrorism charges.

"Many say that LGBTI+ people are an ideology. But I saw the blood of my friends on the sidewalk. I saw their shot bodies, no ideology.

Court favours same-sex couple in groundbreaking verdict

The ruling is the first of its kind in Slovakia.

A same-sex couple wedded abroad has the same right to be granted permanent residence as applies to married couples in Slovakia, the Regional Court in Žilina ruled in what lawyers view as a groundbreaking verdict.

The Žilina Regional Court was dealing with a case filed by a Slovak-Argentinian couple, who were wedded in Argentina, after they were refused permanent residence by the immigration authority, the Foreigners Police. At the end of the process, which took two years, the court found the decision of the Foreigners’ Police to be discriminatory.

A political hot potato, registered partnership bills unsavoury for most politicians

Attempts at passing legislation allowing registered partnerships have become a once-a-decade trend.

Peter Dlhopolec
staff writer & podcaster

Denis Svitek did not feel disappointment after parliament failed to pass a cohabitation bill to a second reading and disregarded the voice of almost 42,000 people calling for its adoption.

“I was outraged” the 28-year-old queer man from the Hlohovec area confessed.

The proposal, put forward by the liberal SaS party following the October 12 terrorist attack outside the Tepláreň gay bar in Bratislava, meant to help unmarried couples by granting them inheritance rights or rights to access each other’s health documentation.

However, conservative and far-right parties feared that the bill would have introduced registered partnerships. Alliance for Family, a notorious organisation that put together a failed ‘pro-family’ referendum that witch-hunts the LGBT+ community with the support of the Catholic Church in 2015, launched a petition against the cohabitation bill, which they presented as a registered partnership bill.

“Developments in the EU after the adoption of registered partnerships should be a warning to you!” the conservative group urged MPs. “Don’t play with fire! It’s about the children!”

Ukraine gets more Soviet-era weapons from NATO member

Slovakia has given 30 BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles and will receive German tanks as replacements, the defense minister said

Slovakia has sent dozens of BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine in exchange for a promised delivery of armor from Germany, Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad has announced. Bratislava has a record of sending outdated military hardware to Kiev while receiving NATO-compatible replacements.

The two nations agreed on the weapons swap in the summer, Nad said on social media. Slovakia is to get 15 overhauled Leopard 2A4 battle tanks, complete with ammunition, spare parts, and training, in exchange for the Soviet-era hardware it’s donating to Ukraine.

Now Slovakia has fulfilled its part of the bargain it expects the German tanks to start arriving as soon as next month and for the deal to be completed throughout 2023, the minister noted. Leopard tanks will significantly strengthen Slovakian capabilities and help it build a NATO-standard heavy mechanized brigade, he explained.

Survey: October attack shifts support for same-sex partnerships

More than 12 percent of people said the attack changed their opinion.

The murder of two LGBT+ people on the Zámocká Street in Bratislava has brought an increased support for the registered partnerships of same-sex couples.

This comes from the recent edition of the regular “How are You, Slovakia?” poll, carried out by the MNFORCE company, the Seesame agency and the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV). The research was conducted between November 4 and 12, and involved 1,000 people.

Slovak coalition government collapses after losing no-confidence vote in parliament

World Dec 15, 2022 3:10 PM EST

PRAGUE (AP) — Slovakia’s coalition government fell Thursday after losing a no-confidence vote in parliament called by the opposition following months of political crisis, in a development that could lead to an early election.

In the country’s 150-seat Parliament, 78 lawmakers, two more than the 76 needed, voted to oust the three-party minority government of Prime Minister Eduard Heger. Three coalition lawmakers voted against the government.

The liberal Freedom and Solidarity party, which requested the vote, withdrew from the coalition government in September. Freedom and Solidarity head Richard Sulik accused the government of incompetence and losing its anti-corruption drive.

“Finally,” Sulik commented on the government’s collapse.

President Zuzana Caputova will have to appoint a new prime minister. Several opposition and coalition parties have indicated they would prefer an early election. A two-thirds parliamentary majority would be needed to hold such an election.

President ready to appoint caretaker government

Parties have until end of January to agree on early elections.

Compiled by Spectator staff

President Zuzana Čaputová has said she would like to see snap elections in the first half of the year as the political crisis gripping Slovakia intensifies.

In a statement addressing the current political situation, she said she would also accept a September date for elections, adding that if the current temporary government was fundamentally unable to perform its functions until such time as early elections can be held, she was prepared to recall it and install a caretaker administration instead.

President wants results by end of January

In a post on social media, the President explained that the interim government - which she appointed after PM Eduard Heger's previous government lost a confidence vote in December - has limited powers and should rule only as long as necessary. Interim PM Eduard Heger (OĽaNO) must cooperate with the president on several matters, including foreign policy.

The push for "LGBT rights" in Slovakia is intensifying, no doubt thanks to Soros and his fellow globalist jews who are working behind the scenes to destroy Eastern European countries with multicultural, homosexual and transsexual propaganda.

Will Slovakia be the first country to send its jets to Ukraine?

Slovakia could reprise its bold move from last year, when it transferred its Soviet-era anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine.

Peter Dlhopolec
editor-in-chief

Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OĽaNO) has been saying for almost a year that Slovakia will consider sending its squadron of grounded Soviet-made fighter aircraft to Ukraine as soon as its eastern neighbour officially asks for such military help.

0 seconds of 0 secondsVolume 0%
“It is natural to use those systems where they can help the most,” he said last April.

Two weeks ahead of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with fears rising that Russia may ramp up the use of its own jets and helicopters in the conflict, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Heger and other leaders during an EU summit in Brussels on February 9. During the meeting with the interim Slovak premier, Ukraine’s president expressed his hope that Slovakia would provide his country with its MiG-29 fighter jets.

“I have asked your prime minister to help us in this case,” Zelensky said.

Conservatives' two proposals to erase transgender people

Transgender people cannot undergo medical or legal transition if proposals are passed.

Michaela Žureková, Compiled by Spectator staff
Editorial

A group of conservative MPs has submitted to parliament another amendment that could make the lives of transgender people in Slovakia more complicated.

In Slovakia, LGBT+ people have no rights. Moreover, transgender people have long been awaiting approval of the new gender reassignment protocol, which is being held back by the conservatives.

If lawmakers pass the proposed amendment in March, it will be impossible for transgender people to undergo a legal transition and have their birth number rewritten in their documents. From the number, it is possible to identify a person's sex, the Sme daily wrote.

'High time' to adopt action plan to help LGBT+ people in Slovakia, says ECRI

Commission assesses implementation of recommendations by Slovakia.

Slovakia has persistently failed to adopt an action plan and related legislation aimed at enhancing LGBT+ equality, states the new assessment of the European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), on how the country implemented previous recommendations.

In this connection, ECRI highlights that the October terrorist attack in Bratislava, which resulted in the death of two LGBT+ persons, has been considered as the result of the long-term use of anti-LGBT+ hate speech in political discourse.

Similarly, Slovakia has partly implemented recommendation to provide compulsory pre-school education to young children, including in municipalities with a considerable proportion of Roma children.

Support for Ukraine waning – EU member president

Slovakia’s Zuzana Caputova says military aid for Kiev is not unlimited and warns of weakening public resolve

Support for Ukraine is declining both materially and morally in Slovakia as the country’s ability to provide Kiev with military aid diminishes, President Zuzana Caputova said on Monday.

“Regarding possible military aid, resources are not inexhaustible,” Caputova stated during a Bratislava conference on foreign policy. “If we do not also invest in the defense industry, we will not be able to move forward even in our own defense,” she explained.

Caputova claimed that public support for Ukraine is “running out” in Slovakia – which is a member of the EU and NATAO – perhaps more than in any other country. She added that while the majority of Slovaks are still inclined to accept Ukrainian refugees, most believe that life has become worse with their arrival.

Cuban runs a gay bar in Bratislava - everybody is welcome, he says

Gay bar bringing capital’s communities together.

Mária Juríková

Turning off from Michalská Street, the often busy, bustling, café- and restaurant-lined thoroughfare in Bratislava’s Old Town district, into a narrow passageway, a burst of colour stands out on the whitewashed, weathered walls.

The colours of the rainbow flag hang above RU!DO, one of the few gay bars in the capital.

Opened last year just before the annual Rainbow Pride in Bratislava, it has become a popular spot in the capital.

But more than this, owner Angel Asiel Abreu Caro tells The Slovak Spectator, it is a safe space for all the city’s communities, not just LGBT+. “No matter what anyone‘s religion, skin colour or sexual preferences are, all are welcome here,“ he says.
