North Korea rejects US envoy’s offer to meet ‘anywhere, anytime’ to restart talks

In a statement released by North Korea’s state news agency, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ri Son Gwon rejected an offer by America's envoy to meet “anywhere, anytime” after negotiations between the two nations stalled.

The Korean Central New Agency (KCNA) quoted Ri on Wednesday as firmly stating that North Korea is “not considering even the possibility of any contact with the US,” adding that negotiations right now would just be “taking up precious time.”

The minister’s comments follow a similar statement from Kim Yo-jong, the younger sister of North Korea’s leader, on Tuesday. Kim, who is the vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), warned that false expectations from the US could simply “plunge them into greater disappointment.”

The UN body said Pyongyang had asked for the lifesaving vaccines to instead be sent to nations with low vaccination rates and surging Covid-19 case numbers.

In July, North Korea rejected a shipment of AstraZeneca vaccines. The Institute for National Security Strategy – a South Korean think-tank – suggested that the decision was due to concerns about very rare cases of blood clotting among a small number of the vaccine’s recipients. The 1.9 million AstraZeneca doses would have been enough to fully vaccinate 7.3% of North Korea’s 26 million people.

North Korea state media reported that the country carried out a test of its new long-range cruise missile. The launch took place over the weekend, and saw the missile successfully hitting its target, according to the report.

The tests were carried out over the course of two days, on Saturday and on Sunday, North Korea’s state KCNA news agency reported. As part of the tests, the missiles destroyed targets some 1,500 km (930 miles) away from the launch site and fell into the country's territorial waters.

Pyongyang hailed the tests as success, claiming that the launch has confirmed all the technical features of the new weapon, including the power of its propulsion system, the missile’s controllability and its accuracy.

North Korea’s armed forces tested out a new “railway-borne missile system,” which traveled some 800km (497 miles) before hitting a target off the country’s east coast, state media reported.

“The railway-borne missile system serves as an efficient counter-strike means capable of dealing a harsh multi-concurrent blow to the threat-posing forces,” said Marshal Pak Jong Chon, who also serves as a member of the Presidium of the Politburo of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea. Speaking during the first night of his four-date ‘History Tour’ in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday, Trump recalled gifting a tape of the song to Kim when the two lunched together.

He said he’d asked Kim whether he knew of it, and when Kim replied he didn’t, gave him a cassette of the album and a machine on which to play it. “I made sure the machine wasn’t made in South Korea,” Trump told the laughing audience.

Pyongyang appears to have carried out its first ballistic missile test of 2022



North Korea has launched a ballistic missile off its east coast, according to military officials in Seoul and Japan, though the exact munition used in the apparent test remains unclear.

“North Korea fired one (short-range) projectile, which is presumed to be a ballistic missile, from an inland region into the East Sea today [January 5] at around 08:10 am,” South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement on Wednesday, as quoted in local media.

The officials added that the military is maintaining “readiness posture in preparation for additional launches” and will closely monitor the situation along with its allies in the US.

Kim spent this week chairing a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, the sole party in the communist state. Launch of what is speculated to be a ballistic missile is the second missile test by Pyongyang in less than a week



Japanese and South Korean governments have reported that a possible ballistic missile was launched by North Korea into the Sea of Japan, warning vessels in the area to stay clear and report any impact.

South Korea’s military said an “unidentified projectile” was launched from the north on Tuesday morning local time. The Japanese coast guard spoke of a “possible” ballistic missile.

If confirmed, this would be the second North Korean launch in the span of six days. Pyongyang said last Wednesday it had test-fired a hypersonic missile that successfully impacted its intended target.

North Korea has appeared to have launched another missile into the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military announced on Thursday morning local time.

Thursday’s launch comes just two days after the test-firing of two cruise missiles on Tuesday morning. It is the sixth such incident since the beginning of 2022, involving at least nine missiles of various types – ballistic, cruise and even hypersonic, as claimed by Pyongyang.

While North Korea is prohibited from launching ballistic missiles under UN resolutions, cruise missiles are not explicitly banned by the UN.

The launch takes place days before the US vice president visits the region

North Korea has test-fired a short-range ballistic missile ahead of US Vice President Kamala Harris’ trip to the region, Seoul says.

The projectile, launched from around Taechon in North Korea’s northwest, traveled around 600km (373 miles) before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The news comes ahead of Harris’ visit to South Korea and Japan, and the planned US-South Korean joint naval exercise. The VP will embark on an Asian tour next week.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has revealed his daughter to the world for the first time as they inspected an intercontinental ballistic missile ahead of its launch.

Mr Kim's daughter, whose existence had never been publicly confirmed before, was seen holding hands with her father.

While state news agency KCNA did not name the girl, experts believe she is Ju Ae, who is estimated to be aged between 12 and 13.

The pair were pictured before the missile was fired on Friday and landed 200km (124 miles) off the coast of Japan, according to South Korean and Japanese officials.

Kim stressed the importance of “mass-producing tactical nuclear weapons,” saying “an exponential increase of the country’s nuclear arsenal” would be the “main orientation” of North Korea’s defense strategy in 2023, KCNA reported.
