Default British soldiers linked to murder probe in Kenya

The Ministry of Defence and Foreign Office are assisting the authorities in east Africa after the body of a woman was found in a sceptic tank at a hotel close to where British troops were training.

Agnes Wanjiru-Wanjiku, who has a six-month old baby, disappeared from the town of Nanyuki around 130 miles north of the capital Nairobi on March 31.

It is understood she had been working as a prostitute and witnesses have since come forward claiming to have seen her enter the Lion’s Court Hotel with two British soldiers on the night she went missing.

A night porter at the hotel claimed to have witnessed a violent altercation between a British soldier and Miss Wanjiku in one of the rooms.

On June 5 workers at the hotel discovered her remains in a sceptic tank within the grounds and a murder hunt was launched.

But Miss Wanjiru’s family have expressed concern that the investigation has made little progress and they fear those responsible may now never be brought to justice.

They claim police have not even requested CCTV footage from the hotel and have not taken statements from any of the witnesses.

After human rights groups raised the concerns with the Kenyan director of public prosecution, he wrote to the local police force demanding a progress report on the case.

British armed forces travel to the area to take part in live firing exercises before deploying to Afghanistan.

An MOD spokesman said they were aware of the investigation and were assisting the Kenyan authorities where appropriate.

MOD spokesperson said: "This is an ongoing Kenyan investigation. We understand that individuals who were in the local area, potentially including some military personnel, may be called on as witnesses in the case. We stand by to offer any assistance and co-operation that is required. As this is an ongoing Kenyan investigation it would be inappropriate for the Ministry of Defence to comment further.”

With thousands of British troops passing through Nanyuki each year as part of their training, there have been problems in the past.

Earlier this year 200 soldiers were involved in a bar brawl at a pub in the town which resulted in a number of troops being injured and requiring hospital treatment.
