Regarding a CNN article titled ‘White House furious after being trolled with Russia Oval Office photos’

12 May 2017 - 10:14

We have been taken completely by surprise by the latest lies published by CNN on May 11 under the title “White House furious after being trolled with Russia Oval Office photos.”

CNN claims, citing its White House sources, that Moscow has again tricked Washington by posting photographs of an Oval Office meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The author of this article alleges that the partners had agreed not to publish these photographs. He cites a White House official as saying: “They tricked us. That’s the problem with the Russians -- they lie.”

This low-grade fake has been laid bare at a briefing of a White House spokesperson held on the day of the above meeting. Replying to media questions, Sarah Sanders said without a shade of indignation that there were official photographers in the room, as it always happens when the US president meets with a foreign minister or a head of state. Moreover, she pointed out that “proper protocol was followed in this procedure.” https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press...ah-sanders-and.

We have to say that this information blunder, far from the first in CNN’s recent history, has shown yet again that the network does not have any serious sources in the current US administration, and neither does it have a professional attitude to journalism.

"Stop spreading these lies and false news. This is good advice for CNN."--Mariya Zakharova, March 2017

If they stop spreading false news, then their sponsors will stop paying money to them. Their ears are closed with money.

Regarding a Neue Zürcher Zeitung article on Russia’s alleged interference in Western election campaigns

16 May 2017 - 21:01

We are perplexed by the involvement of Neue Zurcher Zeitung in the campaign to accuse Russia of intervention in Western election campaigns. On May 13, the Swiss newspaper published an article titled “Putin is waging war on the West.”

The author claims that Russian hackers in the employ of special services interfered in the election campaigns in the United States and France. Their next target is the parliamentary election in Germany, Andreas Ruesch writes.

He refers to “lots of circumstantial evidence” and cites the opinion of Western security services and unidentified software developers. At the same time, he admits that it is impossible to identify the source of the cyberattacks with absolute certainty. And yet, Mr Ruesch blames Moscow for the hacking attacks that discredited the Democratic candidates.

This means that Neue Zurcher Zeitung has joined the host of other media outlets that have abandoned the fundamental principles of professional journalism, such as objective and unbiased reporting, to wage an open information war against Russia. The author of the article in question based his unsubstantiated accusations against Russia on circumstantial evidence, the opinion of security services and his personal perceptions. This is nothing but undisguised mudslinging.

Such publications are primarily damaging the positive image of the Swiss media, which have been regarded until recently as an important social institution committed to the principles of neutrality and dialogue based on mutual respect.

Russia has always advocated respect for international law. We reiterate once again that Russia is not involved in hacking attacks.

Comment by the Russian Embassy in Macedonia on articles in The Sunday Times of April 30 and May 7, 2017, on Macedonia

19 May 2017 - 11:15

Only recently, many doubted that the active involvement of the British media in any information war could undermine the foundations of traditionally strong British journalism. But now it is clear: the quality of British journalism is irreversibly in decline. Further proof of this is the publication of two articles on Macedonia in The Sunday Times dated April 30 and May 7.

The articles, attributed to Bojan Pancevski, with eye-catching headlines of Russia’s alleged interference in Macedonia’s affairs, are such a concentration of neglected facts, such an unhealthy ambition to present adulterated facts and blatant lies that these nonsensical stories cannot even be called professional journalism. It is a shame that the standards of the British media have stooped so low that even The Sunday Times, one of the oldest newspapers in the UK, is forced to publish such cheap propagandised hoaxes.

To refute all the errors and downright fraud of this ‘Bondiana,’ where the rampant imagination of the author and his ‘sources’ have nothing in common with the facts and reality, would be a hopeless waste of time.

How can you hold a serious discussion with an “expert” who takes on the appearance of a knowledgeable journalist reporting on the situation in Macedonia but is not even aware of the results of the December 2016 pre-term parliamentary elections? What can you talk about with an ‘analyst’ who calls the current Macedonian government “pro-Kremlin” and then, several lines down, claims that “members of the Macedonian government were presented with demands by the Russian ambassador to shift their allegiance to Moscow.” Where is logic or just simple common sense?

There is none, as there are no critical questions of political or other implications for Macedonia of the crude and unlawful interference into its affairs via Western diplomacy. The country has been subjected to brazen pressure, blackmail and threats by Brussels, Washington and London who have declared themselves the “outposts of democracy.”

But what is there in abundance is a commitment by Western capitals and the journalists who serve them to blame Russia for this hotspot of chaos and inter-ethnic tension created by the West in Macedonia and around it.

Again, what this undertaking by the West in the Balkans will lead to is still hard to predict. One thing is clear: The Sunday Times will continue to come up with excuses to expose the Kremlin’s ‘schemes’ and this smoothly running machine will continue to churn out Russophobic hoaxes in London.

The Times article ‘Putin’s Propaganda’

20 May 2017 - 09:14

The British daily The Times, which on May 5 published the article “Putin’s Propaganda”, continues to astound us.

Apart from the usual insinuations regarding the alleged interference of the Russian special services in the US and French election campaigns via hacking attacks, the newspaper delivered a dose of antagonism aimed against Russia Today (RT) and the Sputnik news agency. According to The Times, they are a “formidable apparatus of fakery disguised as news.”

We assume the UK media circles are aware of the British media regulator Ofcom’s check of the Russia Today (RT) and the Sputnik news agency’s operation. It is known for a fact that none of the information products issued by these two Russian media outlets fall under the category of fakery. Meanwhile, The Times is regularly caught spreading fake news.

We cannot rule out that the editors of The Times were moved by professional jealousy when they decided to slander Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik.

A fake Facebook page of the Russian Embassy in the Czech Republic

14 April 2017 - 15:35

We have noticed the appearance of a fake page of the Russian Embassy in the Czech Republic in the Czech segment of Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ambasadaRF/. Here are our comments on this matter.

This source has no connection with the official page of Russia’s overseas diplomatic mission. Therefore, the creators of the fake resource are disseminating information on behalf of the Russian Embassy in the Czech Republic without any legal grounds, deliberately misleading Czech readers. We regard this disinformation as a sophisticated method of hybrid influence on the Czech public, highly popular with the West of late.

The official Facebook page of the Russian Embassy in the Czech Republic is located at www.facebook.com/AmbRusCZ/. A link is available on the official Embassy website at www.czech.mid.ru.

Publication in the online Lithuanian outlet DELFI.LT: A Dizzying Career: From an ambitious press secretary in Vilnius to a Russian spy in the United States

14 April 2017 - 15:45

Another fabrication about the activities of Russian diplomats that holds no water was posted on website DELFI.LT. This piece of so-called “investigative journalism” contains a reprint of absolutely false allegations about the work of a Russian Foreign Ministry employee, career diplomat Mikhail Kalugin, who, in August 2016, completed a six-year assignment at the Russian Embassy in the United States. The official representative of the Foreign Ministry pointed out on several occasions that neither Kalugin, nor other Russian diplomats in the United States, were involved in last year's presidential race in the United States.

The Lithuanian website reprints the far-fetched allegations of some “experts on Russia,” who see a KGB officer or a spy in every Russian citizen, not to mention Russian diplomat. A recent report of the Lithuanian special services is a case in point. In it, Russia was once again portrayed as the “main threat” to the security of Lithuania, the Russian Embassy in Vilnius a “spy nest,” and its employees, special service agents posing as diplomats.

This material is interspersed with completely absurd and paranoid observations by a number of named and unnamed Lithuanian diplomats. For example, with reference to the former Lithuanian Ambassador to the United States, it is alleged that about 100 Russian diplomats based in Washington are surveilling Lithuania and other post-Soviet republics. That, in fact, is almost the entire diplomatic staff of our embassy. Who then is doing the work of maintaining relations with the Administration, the State Department and US businesses?

No less false are the allegations that Lithuanian diplomats are under targeted surveillance. That begs the question: What about the fact that these “named and unnamed Lithuanian diplomats” themselves proactively communicated with their Russian colleagues in Washington, attended receptions at our embassy, asked for meetings and spoke at the same expert panels? Does this mean that they, too, were systematically keeping tabs on Russian diplomats? The answer is simple. Clearly, the person who wrote the article and the individuals featured in the article are not aware or pretend that they are not aware of the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, according to which the functions of a diplomat include finding, using all legal means, information about the situation and the events in the host state, which also applies to that country's relations with the outside world.

Finally, the Lithuanian journalist made epically foolish conclusions based on the fact that Mr Kalugin speaks Lithuanian and was part of the Russian diplomatic mission in Lithuania. Indeed, our diplomat is a graduate of the first group of MGIMO students who studied the Lithuanian language. Indeed, immediately after graduation, he was sent to Vilnius, where he worked as press attache and made public statements on the Russian-Lithuanian dialogue. Is that not also what Lithuanian diplomats do – study foreign languages and comment on bilateral relations? What precisely, then, is the author of this “article” exposing?

Publication, on April 13, of information about alleged supplies of Russian weapons by the Croatian newspaper Večernji list

17 April 2017 - 18:22

We have taken note of an article published by the Croatian newspaper Večernji list dated April 13 and titled, New Russian pressure on Croatia: We delivered S-300s to you, where are the missing missiles? regarding alleged deliveries of Russian weapons, including S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, to Croatia during the 1991–1995 conflict in the former Yugoslavia.

In this connection, we would like to emphasise once again that we have unwaveringly adhered to international legal commitments in relation to the UN-imposed embargo on arms exports to the conflicting parties during the Yugoslav crisis of 1991–1995. It is no secret that, during this period, a large number of Soviet-made weapons, ammunition and military equipment were available in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in the former Soviet republics. As is known, shady Croatian dealers took advantage of this circumstance to supply Zagreb. Of course, Russia had nothing to do with this. Meanwhile, the goal of this propaganda campaign, built on malicious speculations surrounding the alleged fabrication, is quite clear, and is designed to damage Russia's cooperation with friendly states in the Balkans, and complicate our interaction with our partners, especially Serbia.

HVG article titled “Russians in our homes”

19 April 2017 - 20:53

It is not surprising that we took note of an openly anti-Russia article published by the Hungarian weekly online resource HVG on April 13. An article titled “Ruszkik idehaza” (Russians in our homes) claims that “the pro-Russian policy of Viktor Orban government can undermine Hungary’s national sovereignty.”

The authors also blame Russia for the erosion of the EU and for creating conditions where “EU citizens will lose their trust in democracy, Western values and unity with America.”

I agree that all of the above is indeed happening in Europe, but not because of Russia. These changes have been generated by the actions of the European countries themselves, in particular, their security and migration policies.

The article includes paranoid references to the “Russian security services that have penetrated Hungary’s civil and military departments” and “drive around the country in expensive cars and eat at luxury restaurants.”

The authors also throw mud at the Russian media, describing RT as “the Russian government’s propaganda bullhorn affiliated with Russian security agencies.”

These and other pseudo-facts provided in the article have nothing to do with reality.

We hope that this primitive attempt to derail the growing Russian-Hungarian cooperation will not do palpable damage to our bilateral relations.

Fake Facebook account of the Russian Embassy in Slovakia

21 April 2017 - 17:03

We have taken note of a fake Facebook account of the Russian Embassy in Slovakia at https://www.facebook.com/Sovietska-a...7029279152889/.

This resource has nothing to do with the official page of the Russian Embassy. The goal of the information posted without a legal reason on the fake page on behalf of the Embassy is to mislead the public. We regard this form of disinformation as a hybrid method of influencing the public, something our partners in the West like to talk about so much.

The official Facebook page of the Russian Embassy in Slovakia is available at https://www.facebook.com/ambasadarus/. The link to it can be found on the Embassy’s official website at http://slovakia.mid.ru/ .

Publication by the Times

25 April 2017 - 22:02

A New Cold War, an editorial published in the British newspaper The Times on April 18, 2017, referred to the Russian media Russia Today and Sputnik as fake news outlets Let's leave this fiction on the conscience of those unknown authors who should be perfectly aware that the British media regulator, Ofcom, never found any proof that the media in question disseminate false information.

The article does not provide any evidence of why these news agencies are called spreaders of fake news or cite any facts to support this. Furthermore, the authors of the article say that Russia Today and Sputnik help spread "fraudulent propaganda." To see such conclusions in a newspaper that once enjoyed the reputation of a highly professional publication is very sad. Unfortunately, The Times continues its information attacks on Russia without trying to understand the context of the rather complicated relations between Russia and the West.

Publication by British tabloid The Sun

28 April 2017 - 17:29

We are surprised by the lack of professionalism of the popular British tabloid The Sun, which published a video titled Racism in Russia depicting the atrocities of Ukrainian football fans in Kiev in its Football Videos online section on April 27, 2017.

Despite the fact that The Sun has edited its original text after the public response on social networks, we still have questions about the reasons for the "geographical error" made by the British news outlet.

Apparently, our predictions about Western media trying to damage Russia’s reputation as we get ready to host the Confederations Cup in 2017 and the World Cup in 2018 are coming true.

Die Welt article ‘Russische Propaganda kinderleicht’ of June 2, 2017

9 June 2017 - 19:42

Die Welt published an article on the German desks of Russia Today, a Russian television network, and Sputnik News Agency. The article’s message was that RT Deutsch and the Sputnik hub in Germany were engaged in “bare-bones pro-Russian state propaganda,” instead of doing journalism. The article went on to suggest that the best solution would be to boycott RT Deutsch and Sputnik’s German website.

In this connection the Foreign Ministry reiterates that RT Deutsch and Sputnik were officially accredited to work in the Federal Republic of Germany and operate in strict compliance with the law. Their work in Germany is absolutely legal and legitimate, and there have been no complaints from the German authorities against them.

The Foreign Ministry would also like to ask Die Welt editorial board a question. Are accusations of professional incompetence appropriate, taking into account Die Welt’s commitment to “support the Transatlantic Alliance and the liberal community in solidarity with the United States of America?”

To add a touch, many Russian Twitter users have noticed intrusive advertising by Deutsche Welle’s Russian desk, saying “Russia surrounded by enemies? Click here. News as they are and without hysteria.” The one and only way this marketing trick can be described is "Deutsche Propaganda kinderleicht.”

Euronews item covering the situation in Venezuela

6 July 2017 - 20:33

We have taken note of the Euronews report aired on July 6 “Venezuela: Protesters storm National Assembly.” It says that a day earlier President Maduro’s supporters wielding sticks and pipe cutoffs stormed the National Assembly and physically attacked the opposition deputies. As a result, a number of legislators have been wounded, and some of them are in critical condition.

On the very day of the incident, President Maduro officially condemned the attack on the oppositional National Assembly and initiated an investigation. He said: “I launch an investigation to bring justice, I myself will never be an accomplice to violence.”

Apparently, the Euronews journalists opted to ignore the stand voiced by the head of state, and covered the incident from the point of view of only one side, the opposition. The professional media community classifies this as “deliberately biased, lopsided coverage of facts.” It is common knowledge that such tricks lead to a misinterpretation of the events described.

We urge the TV channel to give up its politically motivated approach in covering sensitive issues of domestic policy in other countries and go back to the standards of objective, responsible journalism.

Euronews report on Merkel's visit to China

6 July 2017 - 20:40

It is hard not to comment on the July 5 Euronews report stating that “China is the crucial partner and ally of Germany and the whole European Union both in the economy and politics, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during her visit to China.”

China is undoubtedly a crucial partner and ally, and not of Germany alone. There is no doubt about that. Yet the Chancellor was unlikely to say that during her visit to China as Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently in Germany for the G20 Summit.

Normally, we could ignore such an “insignificant” factual error. However, we think that a respectable news channel can hardly afford to report hastily cooked-up fake news, misleading their global audience, regardless of whether it was done deliberately or through negligence.

Regarding the latest anti-Russia allegations by Le Monde

20 July 2017 - 17:34

We have taken note of the article by Le Monde correspondent Benoit Vitkine titled “Faux reporter, vrai tueur” (Pseudo-reporter, true killer), which was published on July 14 of this year. Mr Vitkine writes in the style of the tabloid press, without any facts to prove his story, about the alleged involvement of Russian diplomats and security services in the murder of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s opponents abroad.

According to Le Monde, on June 1 in Kiev, a certain Artur Kurmakayev (Artur Kourmakaïev), who posed as Alex Warner, general manager of Le Monde in Ukraine, made an attempt on the lives of a Chechen couple whom Mr Vitkine described as “a shining example of true fighters against the pro-Russian separatists in Donbass.”

As expected, Mr Vitkine detected a Russian connection in this crime.

In light of this, we would like to remind the French media and the global public that Russia, its diplomats and security services do not engage in such dirty deeds. We also recommend that Le Monde, if it wants to keep up its rating, stop these hackneyed anti-Russia allegations in the French media – allegations which thoughtful people have long ago learned to disregard.

The latest fake propaganda by CNN

26 July 2017 - 20:27

We took notice of the July 25 report by CNN, “Videos suggest Russian government may be arming Taliban”. Distorting the facts to support these groundless attempts to accuse Russia of military cooperation with the Taliban that the US side has made since spring, CNN published videos demonstrating some small arms as “evidence” of the alleged links between Russia and the Taliban. Its journalists admit themselves that it is absolutely impossible to establish the origin of these arms because the brands of their producers are totally absent and serial numbers removed.

Moreover, the arms shown on video are standard. It is common knowledge that they were produced both in Russia and other East European countries. It is also widely known that in the early 2000s the Americans themselves brought them from East European countries directly to Afghanistan on a mass scale.

We are urging the US media to stop their pointless efforts to create evidence to back up their insinuations about Russian defence cooperation with the Taliban. We would like to emphasise again that Russia does not support the Taliban. But we are working to implement a relevant resolution of the UN Security Council. This resolution was adopted at the proposal of the Afghan Government and provides for the Taliban’s inclusion in the political process provided it recognises the current Constitution of Afghanistan, renounces violence and stops cooperating with terrorists.

We would like to remind these “experts” from CNN that the Taliban is part of the population of Afghanistan and it is hard to imagine that the conflict can be ended without them, especially considering the ruins the country was left in by the NATO forces that did not resolve a single issue in the decade they were there. Quite the contrary, during their “work” the terrorist and drug threats have substantially grown in Afghanistan – ISIS has appeared while local drug production increased more than ten times.

Publication by The Washington Post

11 August 2017 - 20:15

The Foreign Ministry noted yet another questionable piece titled ‘What it’s like to live and report in Russia in the Trump era,’ published by the US newspaper The Washington Post on its website on August 6, 2017.

For instance, The Washington Post correspondent Andrew Roth shared his thoughts on the alleged administrative pressure from the Russian authorities related to his professional activities. Mr Roth mentions that in 2014 he was stopped at an overland border crossing from Ukraine into Russia by the border guards who said that the circumstances of his crossing from Ukraine into Russia were suspicious, suggesting that his accreditation could be revoked. Mr Roth went on to describe a 2016 telephone conversation he had with a Ministry of Defence official who hinted that the journalist’s ability to participate in a press tour to Syria would depend on the tone of his reporting in the The Washington Post following the trip.

All this so-called ‘evidence’ of some kind of administrative pressure is clearly far-fetched. The author does not provide any names or positions of the officials from the Russian agencies who allegedly put pressure on him.
