Le Pen calls for far-right unity

Far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen today called for a “union of patriots” to present a single candidate in 2007 French presidential elections.

Le Pen, who faced down incumbent President Jacques Chirac in a stunning run-off vote in 2002, said the far-right could succeed in next year’s presidential election by uniting behind a single candidate.

Next year’s legislative voting also could be won with such a coalition, Le Pen, who heads the National Front party, told France-Inter radio.

“We need a single candidate for the presidency and a coalition I call a ’union of patriots’ which in legislative elections could claim the possibility of an electoral victory,” he said.

The 77-year-old Le Pen did not say whether he had anyone in mind for the job. However, he has said he would run for the presidency again.

The far-right is divided, with a small dissident movement that broke off from the National Front and the growing strength of the Movement for France, headed by Philippe de Villiers.

Villiers does not claim to represent the extreme right, but he espouses similar views on a variety of subjects.

Le Pen’s National Front claimed its ranks were swelling because of the political crisis that grew out of student and union protests over a youth jobs law. Chirac withdrew the measure on Monday. Party spokesman Alain Vizier provided no figures, and the claim could not be verified.

Le Pen – who shocked all of Europe with his second-place showing behind Chirac in 2002 elections – told the daily Le Parisien on Saturday that the crisis had boosted his chances for next year’s presidential vote.
