Doug Emhoff to chair White House roundtable with Jewish groups on rising antisemitism

BY RON KAMPEAS DECEMBER 5, 2022 2:16 PM

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The White House will convene a roundtable with Jewish organizations on antisemitism, to be chaired by Douglas Emhoff, the Jewish Second Gentleman.

Also appearing at the event will be Susan Rice, President Joe Biden’s top domestic policy advisor; Deborah Lipstadt, the State Department’s special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism; and Keisha Lance Bottoms, Biden’s senior advisor for public engagement, the White House said Monday in a statement.

Biden has made combating antisemitism and other bigotries a centerpiece of his agenda; he launched his campaign in April 2019 by saying that the deadly 2017 white supremacist march in Charlottesville, Virginia, and former President Donald Trump’s failure to unequivocally condemn it, made him decide to run for president.

Antisemitic expression has spiked following Elon Musk’s removal of content controls after he purchased the social media giant Twitter and unabashed antisemitism embraced by rapper and designer Kanye West. Biden convened a White House summit in September to address the threat extremism poses to various communities.

New busload of migrants from Nicaragua dropped off at Kamala Harris’ DC home

By Snejana Farberov
December 7, 2022

Dozens of migrants were bused from Texas to DC and deposited on the doorstep of border czar and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday morning.

The newcomers, who said they came from Nicaragua, were filmed getting off the bus, some wrapped in blankets against the morning chill, carrying their belongings outside the Naval Observatory shortly before 7 a.m.

NBC News’ Gary Grumbach tweeted that the new arrivals — among them young children — were immediately met by volunteers from the humanitarian organization SAMU First Response who assessed their needs and found out their travel plans, before loading them into vans headed for the organization’s headquarters.

This isn’t the first time that migrants have been dropped off outside the guarded gates of Harris’ official residence.

During the Biden presidency, migrants have crossed the border in record numbers — with a record-shattering 2.4 million people crossing into the US during the 2022 fiscal year.

Between September and October, at least three buses from Texas brought a total of more than 125 migrants to Harris’ doorstep, after the VP claimed on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the US had a “secure” border.

According to recent Customs and Border Protection data, migrant arrest numbers have almost doubled under the Biden administration and already exceed last year’s record.

More migrants dropped off outside vice president’s home in freezing weather on Christmas Eve

By Noah Gray, CNN
Updated 6:58 PM EST, Sun December 25, 2022

CNN — Several busloads of migrants were dropped off in front of Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, DC, on Christmas Eve in 18 degree weather late Saturday.

An initial two busloads were taken to local shelters, according to an administration official. More buses arrived outside the vice president’s residence later Saturday evening. A CNN team saw migrants being dropped off, with some migrants wearing only T-shirts in the freezing weather. They were given blankets and put on another bus that went to a local church.

Amy Fischer, a volunteer with the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, which has been receiving migrants sent to DC since the spring, said the organization had been prepared for Saturday night’s arrivals, having been informed about it earlier by an NGO working at the border in Texas.

The arrivals included asylum seekers from Ecuador, Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Peru and Colombia, according to Fischer, who told CNN the buses were supposed to go to New York but were diverted to DC due to the weather. Busloads of migrants have been arriving in Washington weekly since April.

White House assails Texas Governor Abbott over Christmas Eve migrant drop

By Nandita Bose and Kanishka Singh

WASHINGTON, Dec 26 (Reuters) - The White House on Monday accused Texas Governor Greg Abbott of endangering lives after busloads of migrants from the southwest border in Texas were dropped near Vice President Kamala Harris' home in Washington, D.C., on a cold Christmas Eve.

The Republican Abbott, a vocal critic of Biden administration immigration policies, has not acknowledged the Christmas Eve drop and his office has not claimed responsibility. President Joe Biden is a Democrat.

An estimated 110 to 130 migrants seeking asylum in the United States, many of them families with children, were placed on buses by Texas officials, immigrant aid groups said on Sunday after the migrants arrived in the U.S. capital.

Kamala Harris’ ‘deep insecurity’ causes toxic work environment, book claims

By Victor Nava
December 30, 2022

Former aides to Vice President Kamala Harris say she is possessed by “deep, deep insecurity” that has led to a toxic work environment in her office, a forthcoming book claims.

Author Chris Whipple writes in “The Fight of His Life” that Harris refused to answer questions about “turmoil and morale problems” among her staff for his book on President Biden’s first months in the White House, but ex-employees described the woman a heartbeat from the Oval Office as dysfunctional and unprepared.
(...)
The onetime staffer further claimed that Harris “refused to do the kind of preparation that you need to do before going public on a hardcore policy matter. And then she became incensed and outraged when things wouldn’t go the way she thought they were supposed to.”

Harris refused to answer questions about “turmoil and morale problems” among her staff, according to the book excerpt.
Scribner

(...)
“When somebody raises an issue about Kamala, everybody’s like, ‘You don’t want to see black women succeed.’ That’s completely backward. Everybody who goes to work for Kamala, by definition, wants to see her succeed. That’s why you take these jobs,” they said.
(...)
“The amount of stress she created by constantly being impossible to manage and taking out all her stresses on staff — usually women, or people who were not in great positions of authority — was just kind of unbearable,” he said.

The descriptions to Whipple are similar to reports that have been published in other outlets since the former senator from California became VP. In June 2021, Politico quoted a source as saying people who worked for Harris “feel treated like s–t.” That December, the Washington Post quoted staffers who said the veep was a “bully” with a “soul-destroying” management style.

Biden yet again refers to his vice president as ‘President Harris’ during border speech

By Steven Nelson
January 5, 2023

WASHINGTON — President Biden yet again referred to his vice president, Kamala Harris, as “President Harris” during Thursday remarks on immigration at the White House.

“President Harris led this effort — led this effort to make things better in the countries from which they are leaving,” the 80-year-old president said.

Later in his remarks, Biden correctly identified Harris as the “vice president.”

The oldest-ever president has made the same error in public on at least five prior occasions.

In October, Biden called Harris a “great president” while wishing her a happy birthday.

Last January, Biden referred to the veep as “President Harris” during a speech in Georgia, in which he also falsely claimed he was arrested multiple times fighting for civil rights.

In December 2021, Biden told students of a historically black college in South Carolina that “of course President Harris is a proud Howard alum.”

Kamala Harris compares January 6 to Pearl Harbor and 9/11 in anniversary speech at the Capitol

On the one-year anniversary of the attack, Vice President Kamala Harris underscored the severity of the January 6 insurrection by comparing it to Pearl Harbor and 9/11.

"Certain dates echo throughout history, including dates that instantly remind all who have lived through them where they were, and what they were doing, when our democracy came under assault," Harris said. "Dates that occupy not only a place on our calendars, but a place in our collective memory: December 7th, 1941, September 11th, 2001, and January 6th, 2021."

Harris recalled her own experience on that day, describing how her staff was "converting filing cabinets into barricades" after she and other lawmakers were evacuated from the Senate and House chambers.

She went on to emphasize how the "fragility and strength" of democracy were represented in tandem on the day of the Capitol siege.

Biden forgets how to pronounce ‘Kamala’ Harris at White House event

By Steven Nelson
January 17, 2023

WASHINGTON — President Biden seemingly forgot how to say “Kamala” Harris Tuesday — years after his vice president taught the country the correct pronunciation.

“As Kamala said, we’re all closely monitoring the storms, the floods, the landslides all across California,” Biden said at a White House celebration for the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, saying his second-in-command’s name like “CAM-a-la” rather than the proper “COMMA-la.”

Biden, 80, is the oldest-ever president and his mental acuity is often debated as he prepares to launch a 2024 reelection campaign. His defenders say he’s simply prone to gaffes and a stutter.

Harris’ name was inspired by her mother’s South Indian heritage and she effectively educated much of the public on how to say “Kamala” before or during the 2020 election campaign.

Harris to mark 50th anniversary of Roe ruling with speech in Florida

BY BRETT SAMUELS AND ALEX GANGITANO - 01/18/23 1:38 PM ET

Vice President Harris will deliver remarks in Florida on Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling, aiming to put the spotlight back on abortion rights following last summer’s ruling that struck down the precedent set by Roe.

Harris will travel to Florida where Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) last year signed into law a ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, to highlight the administration’s efforts to protect reproductive rights and abortion access.

“The Vice President will push for national legislation to protect reproductive rights, and she will draw contrast between the Republicans’ extreme approach to reproductive health and that of the Biden-Harris Administration,” a White House official said of Harris’s planned remarks.

The decision to pick Florida was due to it being at the “forefront” of the fight for reproductive care, senior administration officials said.

Harris plans to push back on legislation in Congress the restricts abortion access, efforts by some Republicans to pass a national abortion ban, and efforts in states to embrace extreme restrictions on abortions, officials said. The speech will also focus on executive actions from the administration to defend reproductive rights.

Kamala Harris reveals Biden's 2023 priorities includes inflation, job growth: 'Never been more optimistic'

Harris said the administration would continue to battle inflation, would create more jobs, and would grow the economy

By Lawrence Richard | Fox News

Vice President Kamala Harris teased the Biden administration's top priorities for 2023, following a meeting at the White House Thursday with members of the Cabinet.

After the meeting, Harris shared a photo of the administration’s top officials at the White House and said they would be focusing on slashing inflation, job growth, and growing the economy.

In the tweet, the vice president said she has "never been more optimistic about our future."

"I've never been more optimistic about our future. Today, standing with [President Joe Biden] and other members of the Cabinet, we discussed our plan for 2023. Together we will deliver on lowering inflation, creating more jobs, and building an economy that works for everyone," she wrote.

Did Kamala forget the Declaration? VP says all Americans are 'endowed with the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness' but leaves out 'life' in remarks demanding reinstated abortion rights on 50 anniversary of Roe v. Wade decision

By KATELYN CARALLE, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM
PUBLISHED: 18:12 GMT, 22 January 2023 | UPDATED: 20:31 GMT, 22 January 2023

Kamala Harris conveniently left out the right to 'life' part of the Declaration of Independence during her remarks pushing the administration's new plan to tackle abortion rights.

The vice president attacked Florida Governor Ron DeSantis from the ground in Tallahassee on Thursday with remarks announcing new nationwide protections for access to abortion pills and denounced the Sunshine State's new abortion laws.

Harris was deployed to Florida by the White House to commemorate what would have been the 50 year anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, which was overturned by the Supreme Court in June.

Kamala Harris’s Silence on Biden Doc Scandal Raises Questions, Suspicions

WENDELL HUSEBØ 25 Jan 2023

Vice President Kamala Harris has been eerily quiet about President Joe Biden’s classified document scandal, causing at least some Republicans to believe Harris could be angling to push Biden out of the way for a shot at the Oval Office.

Though Harris has delivered several public statements since the scandal was leaked to the press on January 9, she has neither supported Biden nor condemned any wrongdoing. Her public comments during this timeframe have largely remained on script, ranging from global warming, Venn diagrams, electricity, school buses, and the southern border invasion.

The communications strategy appears noticeably different from her attacks on former President Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified materials. In August, Harris slammed Trump as “irresponsible” for questioning the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago.

“It’s just highly irresponsible of anyone who calls themselves a leader and certainly anyone who represents the United States of America to engage in rhetoric for the sake of some political objective that can result in harm to law enforcement officers and agents,” Harris said.

We’re visiting Auschwitz because the fight against antisemitism didn’t end with liberation

(JTA) — Today, we will visit Auschwitz-Birkenau to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day. We will represent the United States and honor the lives of 6 million Jews and millions of others murdered. While at Auschwitz, we will also express gratitude to the survivors and speak of the lessons learned in that era of terror.

As we reflect on history, we know that the bigotry that fueled the Holocaust did not end when the camps were liberated. Antisemitism may be considered one of the oldest forms of hatred, but its insidious impact and its deep dangers are not relegated to the past.

Antisemitism is increasing at home and abroad. Hatred of Jewish people simply for being Jews is real and rising. We can only stop this scourge if governments and community leaders declare it unacceptable and inconsistent with our values.

With that in mind, we will convene community leaders in Poland to discuss efforts underway to combat antisemitism. Then, we will travel to Berlin, where we will meet with foreign government officials, who are also dedicated to turning the tide of hate. Our goal is to deepen our relationships with European partners — in and out of government — to combat the rise in antisemitism.

Twitter reacts to Warren stopping short of endorsing VP Harris for re-election: 'Interesting word choice'

Warren says, 'I really want to defer to what makes Biden comfortable' regarding VP pick

By Jessica Chasmar | Fox News

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., sparked a flurry of speculation on social media over the weekend after she stopped short of backing Vice President Harris as President Biden's 2024 running mate.

During an interview on Boston Public Radio, Warren was asked if Harris should be Biden's running mate.

"I really want to defer to what makes Biden comfortable on his team," she responded. "I’ve known Kamala for a long time. I like Kamala. I knew her back when she was an attorney general, and I was still teaching and we worked on the housing crisis together, so we go way back."

"But they need — they have to be a team," she added, "and my sense is they are — I don’t mean that by suggesting I think there are any problems. I think they are."

US VP’s own party questions her fitness to serve

Kamala Harris lacks the “force, charisma, and skill” to win a presidential race, senior Democrats told the Washington Post

More than a dozen senior Democrats doubt US Vice President Kamala Harris can win a presidential election.

“People are poised to pounce on anything – any misstep, any gaffe, anything she says – so she’s probably not getting the benefit of the doubt,” former Cobb County Democratic Party chair Jacquelyn Bettadapur told the Washington Post for its article published on Monday. Nor is the vice president “adept as a communicator,” she added.

Many of the Democrats who spoke to the Post – most on condition of anonymity – insisted they personally liked the VP, but feared her “underwhelming” performance since joining President Joe Biden’s administration would prevent her from closing the enthusiasm gap among voters should Biden opt not to run for reelection.
(...)
Harris would face an uphill climb to gain popular support, however. The former California senator failed to win a single state in 2020’s Democratic primaries, dropping out before voting began after poor debate performance and trouble retaining staff sandbagged her campaign. Her approval rating hovers at a dismal 38.4%, below Biden’s own 42.4%.

Americans grade Kamala Harris' performance as border czar

How well has the vice president managed the border crisis? Americans weigh in

By Gabrielle Reyes | Fox News

AUSTIN, Texas – People in the Lone Star state graded Vice President Kamala Harris' performance as border czar, with those who spoke to Fox News evenly split.

"Typically, the grading system goes A through F," Beverly, of North Dakota, told Fox News. "I give her a Z."

Harris has visited the southwest border only once since President Biden tasked her in March 2021 with addressing the root causes of the ongoing immigration surge. In June, the vice president said the Biden administration's efforts alongside private organizations were "making progress" — in part by generating over $3.2 billion in economic investments across Central America.

‘Emotional and intense’: Douglas Emhoff’s trip to Poland and Germany brings him back to his Jewish ancestral roots

BY TOBY AXELROD JANUARY 31, 2023 5:56 PM

BERLIN (JTA) — For second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, the final hours of a five-day working trip to Poland and Germany brought everything into focus.

It was here in the underground information center in Germany’s central Holocaust memorial that Emhoff sat down with several survivors, including two who had recently fled war-torn Ukraine.

Sitting in a small circle, they shared their stories. One of them “was saved in the Holocaust as a young baby, settled in Ukraine and then just had to flee again. And she was taken in by Germany,” Emhoff said in remarks immediately following the meeting. “It was a real emotional and intense way to finish the trip.”

The journey, which he undertook with Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, included visits to Krakow, Poland; to the nearby memorial and museum at Auschwitz-Birkenau; and to the Polish village of Emhoff’s ancestors, Gorlice.

It was all intended to feed into the design of a “national action plan against antisemitism” that Emhoff is working on with Lipstadt and others. The second gentleman has made combating Jew hatred his main focus since entering the White House, touring college campuses to talk on the subject and leading events with Jewish organizations.

Poll: Only 39% Want Kamala Harris to Be Joe Biden’s Running Mate in 2024

JACOB BLISS 5 Feb 2023 Washington, DC

Only 39 percent of likely voters in the United States want Vice President Kamala Harris to remain as President Joe Biden’s running mate in 2024, a Rasmussen Reports poll found.

The poll released Friday found that only 39 percent want to see Harris run as Biden’s running mate if he runs in 2024. In comparison, 48 percent of the respondents said they did not want to see Harris be the running mate. Thirteen percent said they were unsure.

Divided by party, 68 percent of Republican respondents said they would not want Harris to run as the vice president on the 2024 ticket, while 63 percent of Democrat respondents said Harris should be the running mate.

However, with independents, 32 percent said she would be the running mate, while a majority (51 percent) think she should not be. Only seventeen percent were not sure.

Additionally, the poll found that only 43 percent of the respondents also had a favorable impression, which included 19 percent who said they had a “very favorable” view. In comparison, 55 percent viewed the vice president unfavorably.

Last month, shortly after Biden hit his halfway point as a first-term president, there was a report that indicated several Democrats have also expressed doubts about Harris running on the 2024 Democrat ticket as many are becoming worried about Biden’s age and if she would be able to take over — since he would be 86 years old at the end of a second term.
