Great thread.

In April 1982 I was a very young boy and I picked up the newspaper my parents bought just to read the articles about the war in the Falklands/Malvinas Islands.

I followed the war fairly closely back then even though I was only 19 years old. Several years ago, I watched a documentary about the search for the General Belgrano cruiser that was sunk by the British. Unfortunately, the wreck was not located. A few years ago, Argentina lost a submarine in an accident, but I can't remember if they found it yet.

I was 11 years old, and I still didn't understand all the strategic details at that time; I was only interested in combat.

I consider the Falklands to be naturally Argentine, but we also know that Argentine President Leopoldo Galtieri invaded the islands to divert attention from the serious internal problems in his country.

Now, they are talking about Caribexit, in which the English-speaking island nations there want to ditch the queen.

Curious fact is that most American supported the Brits back in '82.

Despite Argentina being a "hemispheric partner" and all that, enough of us still felt the kinship with the home islands back then.

Now? Good question.

(Thanks for the prod upward. I had no idea it was FORTY YEARS AGO!)

Too bad Lutador Branco is away from the forum at the moment, I wanted to ask him if he remembers when the low on fuel RAF Vulcan bomber had to divert to the Rio de Janeiro airport for an emergency landing. Rather embarrassing moment for Maggie Thatcher and her government in London at the time.

I only knew this story briefly and superficially, but I'm getting to know it a lot better now with Mark Felton's video, thanks for posting!

THE CONFLICT 30 YEARS LATER

Brazil and Great Britain almost clashed in the skies in the Falklands War, says fighter pilot

On June 3, 1982, the country intercepted British planes that had invaded its airspace.

When the world was shocked to discover that Argentina had invaded the Falkland Islands, a historically claimed territory located 500 kilometers off its coast, global actors slowly began to decide which side they would take.

The islands were and remain a British overseas possession called, in English, the Falkland Islands. Although the Brazilian government adopted a neutral stance, the Falklands War, which began its 30th anniversary on Monday, was too close not to spill over into Brazil.

The then captain Raul Dias, now a major brigadier, was one of the protagonists of the day when Brazil and Great Britain almost faced each other in the skies.

Mission: Black Buck 6
Given the distance of more than 12,000 kilometers between Great Britain and the Falklands, seven RAF (Royal Air Force) missions, called Black Buck, were launched, in which British bombers departed Ascension Island, a British domain in the middle of the Atlantic, more than 2 thousand kilometers east of Pernambuco. The aircraft used were the Avro Vulcans, which, due to their low flight autonomy, needed to be refueled in midair. F-5E fighter pilot stationed in Rio de Janeiro, then Air Force captain Raul Dias, now living in Porto Alegre, recalls:

"The war was happening very close to us, although the fighting took place far away. The British planes were passing close to us too. Argentines in the Falklands. On their way back, they also needed to refuel in order to return to base."

Fireworks
On June 3, 1982, Brazilian radars picked up planes invading airspace. At first, the exact reasons for the approach were not known. It could be either a plane with problems or an assault. The entry of an aircraft into the airspace of another country is not a declaration of war, but a serious incident. It was necessary to react - and fast.

"A colleague and I were going to take off for another mission that day. But the air defense radars identified four planes coming from the sea to Rio de Janeiro and that, from the speed, it was known that it was a jet aircraft. he knew, however, what type of plane it was, because at the time of the problem, British regulations said to silence the radio and head, in this case, in Rio de Janeiro. Only later, they would request an emergency landing or something The British planes were more than 100 miles off the Brazilian coast. That is, they were identified at the maximum limit of radar detection at the time, between 150 and 200 miles. Then three of them left. the alert was activated, a siren sounded. And the coordination control, through the radio, activated the code for the situation: Fire fire, which indicated a real mission."

"It was the first and last time I heard the code and there I knew that I was engaged in a real mission and that I was taking off to enter combat. The chief flight controller was Brigadier Major José Orlando Bellon - today also in the reserve He triggered the alert in Santa Cruz, a military base in the suburbs of Rio. The fighters had their cannons loaded, because we were already flying with the maximum cartridge capacity, we just didn't have the bullet in the needle in the 20mm cannons. , we took off to make the intercept without knowing who it was."

the interception

Dias had a confused sense of time, but the almost daily training of similar situations helped him in a historic moment of the 1st Hunting Group: it was the first time that the contingent was activated since the FAB's participation in World War II. With seven years of training, he piloted an F-5E, an American-made fighter, considered very modern by the standards of the time. The exercise routine made taking off, checking the weapons, talking to the controller an automatic movement, where reasoning is almost replaced by a reflex act.

I guided him - because I was getting air defense instructions - and hooked up to the international emergency channel, through which I passed the coordinates to the bomber. Afterwards, we escort him to the Galećo."

The other side

The Vulcan was heading for Rio only because the aircraft could not land anywhere else. With no way to refuel in flight, the crew only had fuel to get to Brazil, otherwise they would have to eject in the middle of the ocean.

"The Vulcan pilot went through a limit situation, because they had no idea that they would be intercepted so soon. They thought they would land in Rio without being intercepted. They underestimated our capacity. They must have thought: 'will they shoot us down?' We were Latinos, neighbors of Argentina, could it be that, in this context, an attack would not be possible? Until we said that we would escort them, accompany the landing, it must have been an anguish for them. When the in-flight refueling device broke , they already knew they would have to land in Brazil.

The return

The mission was a success. Communication was established, and the Vulcan landed safely on Galećo. Upon returning to Brazilian soil, at the base of Santa Cruz, the 30-year-old captain left the fighter with trembling legs and his heart racing:

"After I landed, I talked to the Vulcan crew. sweats a lot and even loses a few pounds. After the mission, the adrenaline rush, all the shaking, that certainly happened to them too, because when your body relaxes, your body reacts with those almost uncontrollable spasms."

Falklands War

The RAF Vulcan was escorted by two Brazilian Air Force F-5Es to land in Rio de Janeiro.

Note: Brazil let the Vulcan bomber go days later, but its missile was held up here in Brazil.

The Vulcan Bombers came from a museum!! The look on the Argentinas face when they realised the Brits had bombed the airfield was priceless😂

I think if this war were fought over those barren rocks in the South Atlantic today, or if Argentina took them back, nobody would really give a shit. I seriously doubt the United Kuckdom would even bother with it now, and their military is an utter joke. The Falklands War is probably the last war they will ever win.
