According to a report in The Intercept, the top five US defence contractors — Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman — the 20-year Afghanistan war was an “extraordinary success”.

Raytheon to Produce 1,300 Stingers for US Army

The US Army has awarded Raytheon Missiles & Defense a $624 million contract to replenish the Stinger missiles delivered to Ukraine to defend itself against the Russian invasion.

The contract covers the production of 1,300 Stingers and the provisions for equipment and engineering support to address obsolescence and accelerate the missile's production.

The latest contract is being paid out of the $40 billion Ukraine supplememtal funding.

The manufacturer has been struggling to restart missile production since it received a $340 million Stinger order from the Pentagon last year on behalf of a foreign client.

Raytheon had not produced the missile in 18 years due to a lack of demand from the Department of Defense.

Western countries have sent the shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile to Ukraine "in thousands" since the war broke out in late February. The US has committed 1,400 Stingers to Kyiv.

Raytheon CEO Greg Hayes was quoted as saying in late April that the company has "a very limited stock of material for stinger production."

Moreover, as the missile was not in production for almost two decades, some of the missile components "are no longer commercially available," forcing the company to redesign some of the missile's electronics.

. . . Meanwhile, the US Army has solicited information from the industry for a Stinger replacement. The army plans to begin design and development of the replacement in 2023.

US Soldiers in Hawaii Accused of Blow-Darting Cats

Some of you may have wondered “what are US soldiers doing when they’re not having gay sex or training terrorists?” The answer, of course, is that they are torturing cats.

Army Times:

Army officials in Hawaii say they’re looking into reports made by an Oahu animal rescue organization accusing soldiers at Schofield Barracks of shooting stray cats with blow darts.

“It is our understanding that a group of Soldiers purchased blow dart guns while on a recent training to Indonesia and brought them home to Hawaii,” KAT Charities wrote on the group’s Facebook page. “We have seen multiple cats with darts currently in them, such as the one pictured here.”

The accusation, and the Army’s response, was quickly picked up by local TV news stations.

“U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii was just made aware and is initiating an investigation into these reports,” officials at the installation said in a statement to KHON2. “We cannot speculate about the details at this time while the investigation is ongoing. We ask that witnesses with first-hand information contact Schofield Barracks Military Police at (808) 655-5555. This type of behavior is not tolerated on the installation and is not in keeping with our Army values.”

Schofield Barracks officials did not immediately return a request for comment sent by Army Times on Friday afternoon.

The Marine Corps has confirmed that all 5 Marines who were on board a MV-22 Osprey that crashed in southern California on Wednesday afternoon are dead, according to a statement from the branch.

The Osprey tiltrotor aircraft crashed near Glamis, Calif. - a small town between El Centro, Calif. and Yuma, Ariz. According to the Marines, the aircraft was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton with Marine Aircraft Group 39.

"We mourn the loss of our Marines in this tragic mishap," Maj. Gen. Bradford Gering, the commander of 3rd Marine Air Wing, said in the latest update issued Thursday.

While speaking over the radio, first responders discussed having to be cautious around the crash because of "radioactive materials," leading to concerns the aircraft was carrying nuclear materials. However, the Marines have confirmed that "contrary to initial social media reports, there was no nuclear material on board the aircraft."

. . . The crash is the second fatal Osprey incident for the Corps this year and once again brings attention to the craft's troubled and deadly development.

In March, an Osprey crashed near Bodo, Norway while participating in a military exercise, killing four Marines. That aircraft was based out of Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina. Initial reports suggested weather may have been a factor.

Although these latest crashes are the first deadly incidents with the aircraft since 2017, between 1991 and 2006, while the aircraft was undergoing testing, there were four crashes resulting in 30 deaths.

This aircraft may have been part of a huge mysterious military exercise that was going on off the Baja California coast that involved planes from the air force and navy, in addition to the aircraft carrier Nimitz. It's the same area where in 2004 and 2015, the Nimitz's planes encountered the "Tic-Tac" UFOs.

Military Leader Warns of 'Pre-Serial Killer Tendencies' After 4 Mutilated Cats Found at Nellis Air Force Base

A military leader at Nellis Air Force Base is warning airmen about "pre-serial killer" activities at the Nevada base after four cats were found mutilated in recent months, leading security forces to start an investigation into the animal abuse.

A June email from Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Schaefer, the command chief master sergeant of the 57th Wing at the base, circulating online warns airmen that four cats have been found "cut in half" since February.

"The only parts found have been the lower portion and the cuts have been clean, indicating it is not a natural attack by a coyote or any other predator," the email says.

. . . The cats' bodies were discovered by housing maintenance workers. The Security Forces Squadron at Nellis is investigating the incidents, according to the email.

It's not clear who owned the animals that were located, but a Nellis representative told Military.com that no base residents reported their cats missing.

Schaefer's email raised the alarm about the animal killings and told airmen tp report suspicious activity or if they witnessed any attempts to catch stray animals.

On Monday, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks said Pentagon leaders believe the state of Ukraine will survive Russia's invasion and that the US is preparing to arm the country for years to come.

Biden Says US Will Beef Up Military Presence in Europe as NATO Summit Begins in Madrid

President Biden kicked off his three-day visit to s NATO summit in Madrid by announcing that the US plans to increase its military presence in Europe.

Speaking with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Biden said the US will increase the numbers of US Navy destroyers stationed at a naval base in Rota, Spain, from four to six.

The president said that this was the first of multiple announcements the US and NATO will make at the summit on increasing their forces in Europe, steps being taken in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"And as I said before the war started: If Putin attacked Ukraine, the United States would enhance our force posture in Europe and respond to the reality of a new European security environment," Biden told reporters.

. . . NATO is set to approve a significant increase in its troop presence in Eastern Europe and the Baltic States, although exact numbers aren't set. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday that part of the plan is to increase its high-readiness force from 40,000 to over 300,000.

Stoltenberg described the alliance's plans as "the biggest overhaul of our collective defense and deterrence since the Cold War." NATO preparing for its largest military buildup in decades as it is pumping weapons into Ukraine also means the risk of nuclear war is at its highest since the end of the Cold War.
