The book quotes one of Martha's close friends at the time, Norma Collier, a high-fashion model who became her partner in a successful catering business, as stating that Martha's parties were on the wild side. 'I knew that they had nude pool parties. Martha told me that these parties were happening, and she told me she was not inviting my husband and me because she knew we were uptight Republicans, wet blankets.

'Martha was not embarrassed by any of this, said it was fun, and liked it. She's an experimental person and will do anything to get kicks or shock people.'

The point of the quotation is that great attention to detail does not necessarily go along with uptightness or that certain type of personality you might expect.
