Bulgaria: The Ministry of Economy will Unblock Arms Exports for BGN 1 Billion

Politics | August 8, 2022, Monday // 16:18

The Ministry of Economy will unblock arms exports for BGN 1 billion (EUR 510,648,536). This was announced by the caretaker minister, Nikola Stoyanov, at a press conference.

According to him, the arms industry is currently "on its knees" due to delays in export approvals. The previous minister, Kornelia Ninova, did not convene a committee to approve eligible export requests.

"This is a planted bomb, but I will fulfill my duties. I will convene a commission and all traders who meet the conditions will be allowed to carry out their activities. Between 230 and 240 files worth BGN 1 billion have been accumulated," explained Stoyanov.

He added that he cannot dispute the claims of the former executive director of the state arms dealer "Kintex" Alexander Mihailov, that Bulgaria exported more than 4,000 tons of weapons to Ukraine via Poland.

Former Bulgarian PM: It would be Tragic to Give Up Liquefied Gas and Pay in Rubles

Politics | August 10, 2022, Wednesday // 11:01

Kiril Petkov @Nova TV

“Liquefied gas from the United States is the best option for Bulgaria”. Former Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said this on Nova TV. According to him, he negotiated personally with the suppliers, without intermediaries.

"For me, it would be tragic to give up liquefied gas and pay in rubles. Not for anything else, but because I will be afraid of what will happen in the winter. Now they are talking about whether Gazprom will let us pay in rubles or not. The ruble is not the problem. The real issue is security of supply. At the moment, the German companies pay in rubles and have stopped their gas on Nord Stream 1, the Italian ones have reduced their supplies. I am most afraid that in the fall, just as the heating season begins, the problems will begin. For example - planned repair of some turbine", said the former Prime Minister.

According to him, the best option is if Bulgaria is independent from Gazprom this winter

North Macedonia Jews Condemn Naming Bulgarian Club After ‘Collaborator’ King

August 10, 2022

North Macedonia’s small Jewish community on Tuesday condemned the decision by an association of Bulgarians in Ohrid, North Macedonia to name itself after King, or Tsar, Boris III of Bulgaria – the wartime monarch under whom Bulgaria joined the Nazi-led Axis in World War II and occupied much of today’s North Macedonia.

“It is obvious that the registration of associations with Bulgarian self-consciousness that bear names of proven collaborators of Nazi Germany is becoming more common. This represents an intentional provocation and offence for the Jewish community, and an offence for the Macedonian state and its citizens,” the community wrote.

American Soldiers are coming to Bulgaria to Defend NATO's Eastern Flank

Politics » DEFENSE | August 14, 2022, Sunday // 10:15

American soldiers will be deployed in Bulgaria as part of NATO's plans for deterrence and the defense of the eastern flank. This was reported by the Twitter account of the US mission to NATO.

The announcement does not make it clear what part of the 2,400 soldiers from the US 101st Airborne Division will remain in Bulgaria. The rest will be located in Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.

The American soldiers will participate in the reinforcement of the eastern flag, where there are battalion battle groups, specially created by a decision of NATO and approved in March and May by the Bulgarian government.

It is noted that the 101st Airborne Division is known as the "Screaming Eagles". It was first deployed in Europe during World War II.

Bulgaria will Not Support a Complete Ban on Visas for Russians to the European Union

Politics » DIPLOMACY | August 25, 2022, Thursday // 17:47

Bulgaria will support the suspension of the agreement to facilitate the issuance of visas for Russian citizens, which was signed between Moscow and Brussels, but not its complete ban. This was announced today at a briefing by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kostadin Kojabashev.

The idea comes from the Czech Presidency of the European Union and is to be discussed in Prague at the end of August at an international forum dedicated to Ukraine.

On the Bulgarian side, Deputy Minister Velislava Petrova will participate in the forum.

Bulgaria’s President blamed the "Petkov" Cabinet for the New Gas Price and Defended Talks with Gazprom

Politics | September 2, 2022, Friday // 18:39

Kiril Petkov (left) and Rumen Radev (right)

President Rumen Radev described as shocking the price of natural gas for September after returning from an official visit to the UAE. Yesterday, the Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (EWRC) decided that it would rise the price by nearly 19% compared to August and make it BGN 353.21/Mwh. Asked to comment on a statement by acting Prime Minister Gulab Donev that the government's work will be judged by the price of gas, the president stated that the tasks of the acting government are to hold elections and control inflation.

Radev emphasized that the "huge jump" in the price was due to two liquefied gas tankers contracted in July, when the “Petkov” cabinet and the previous management of Bulgargaz were still in power. He added that the price of gas from them is almost twice as high as declared by businesses and consumers to be extremely bearable.

"Even mixing with Azeri gas cannot mitigate these shockingly high values," Radev said.

Half of Bulgarians Do Not Approve of the Euro: Top 3 Eurozone Skeptics

Business » FINANCE | September 16, 2022, Friday // 11:45

@BNR

Almost half (46%) of Bulgarians who participated in the latest Eurobarometer poll do not approve of the monetary union in the EU with a single currency, the euro. They remain more than the adopters of the euro, although in half a year the "In favor" group has increased by three percentage points to 40%.

Nearly 18 months before the date the authorities have set as a target for Bulgaria to join the Eurozone, 14% say they "don't know" or "refuse to answer" whether or not they approve of the euro. No other country in the EU has such a high proportion of people without an opinion - even those countries that are not obliged to adopt it or do not plan to do so at all.

The end result is that Bulgaria, a country in the "euro waiting room", is in the Top-3 in terms of the share of those who disapprove of parting with the national currency.

US announces New Foreign Military Financing to support Bulgarian Modernization and Regional Defense

Politics » DIPLOMACY | October 7, 2022, Friday // 11:12

@Ministry of Defense

The US Embassy is pleased to announce that the Congress of the United States has approved nearly million in additional Foreign Military Financing for Bulgaria. This funding is intended to assist in modernizing Bulgaria’s military, bolstering NATO collective defense efforts in the region, and building capabilities and interoperability in Bulgaria to deter and defend against the increased threats to the Alliance in a critical region.

Bulgaria has provided valuable humanitarian support to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s full-scale invasion and has contributed greatly to collective defense by hosting a multi-national NATO battlegroup that is an important part of the Alliance’s deterrence and defense posture on its eastern flank. Bulgaria has also provided refuge to tens of thousands of displaced Ukrainians.

Bulgarian vice president opposes plan for Zelensky to address parliament

A speech by the Ukrainian president would only disrupt work of legislators, Iliana Iotova believes

Bulgarian Vice President Iliana Iotova has voiced her opposition to plans for Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to address MPs at the opening session of the country’s recently-elected parliament. Such a move would be a part of a political game that would only disrupt the normal work of the legislature, she told journalists on Saturday.

Iotova said she considered it “unacceptable” for Zelensky to address Bulgarian parliamentarians at a time when his own country is going through “its hardest moments.” She also said the whole idea of such an address was nothing but part of an internal political struggle in Bulgaria.

Poland will send Engines for the Bulgarian MiG-29 Fighter Jets

Politics » DEFENSE | October 28, 2022, Friday // 17:55

The Ministry of Defense is looking for a solution to continue the operation of the MiG-29 aircraft through repair and/or delivery with the support of Poland. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said this in response to a parliamentary question.

At the beginning of August, a request for the purchase or repair of 6 engines was sent to the Polish side. As a result of the meetings held, Poland undertook the repair of the six engines, said Minister Stoyanov.

He also announced that the Polish Ministry of Defense has decided to decommission one MiG-29 aircraft and prepare its engines for sale to Bulgaria.

"The Ministry of Defense has received information that Poland will present an offer and a draft contract next week," added Minister Stoyanov.

Since the beginning of 2022, there have been 10 Deaths along the Bulgarian-Turkish Border

Politics » DEFENSE | November 12, 2022, Saturday // 10:59

Since the beginning of 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has received two reports of violence against migrants. The checks on them have been completed and it has been established that there is no evidence of physical violence. At the same time, for the same period, there is information about ten deaths of refugees found while patrolling the border area. The Ministry of the Interior believes that the reason for the data on violence by Bulgarian police officers is that the traffickers instructed the refugees to say that they were beaten.

This is understood from the answer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to "Dnevnik" to questions related to the data of non-governmental organizations from Bulgaria, but also international observers, according to which the Bulgarian police force repels refugees trying to enter the country.

A Pro-Russian Paramilitary Formation in Bulgaria is being Investigated for a Crime against the Republic

Politics » DEFENSE | December 16, 2022, Friday // 12:12

The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office is investigating a possible crime against the Republic of Bulgaria, the prosecution announced.

The object of the inspection is the Military Union - Bulgarian National Militia "Shipka" (BNO Shipka/БНО Шипка), which was reported on 12.12.2022 as carrying out anti-state activities.
(...)
After completion of the inspection, the supervising prosecutor will assess whether there is sufficient evidence of a crime committed, according to the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office.

On the Facebook page of the paramilitary union in question, a video was uploaded with a man named Vladimir Rusev, who called on the militia's supporters to prepare for important events of an international scale, including the suspension of Facebook and advising them to download the Telegram channel on their phones to stay informed in time for an approaching apocalypse. Rusev himself is in a military uniform with a tag with his name and blood type, under it is an eagle badge with the Russian flag, and the video is against a geographical map.

Bulgaria’s President and Austria’s Chancellor: Guarding the EU's External Borders is Key to tackling Illegal Migration

Politics | January 1, 2023, Sunday // 14:30

“Protecting the external borders of the European Union is a common commitment of all member states and is key to tackling illegal migration.” This was the general position of President Rumen Radev and the Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria Karl Nehammer, who talked today in Vienna, reports the press service of the Bulgarian presidency.

At the invitation of Karl Nehammer, the Bulgarian president is the only state leader invited to this year's edition of the traditional New Year's concert of the Vienna Philharmonic in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein.

The two leaders highlighted during the warm-up the good cooperation between Bulgaria and Austria and discussed the European migration and asylum policy before the European Council on February 9 and 10.

Rumen Radev stressed that the protection of the external European borders requires even closer cooperation between European countries, as well as targeted technical and financial support from the EU. The President also reminded that Bulgaria has made substantial investments in the improvement of the protection of its borders and this has been confirmed by all the missions of the European Union.

Bulgaria anti-graft party drops bid to form government, extending deadlock

Reuters

SOFIA, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Bulgaria's second largest party, the anti-corruption We Continue the Change (PP), gave up plans on Friday to form a government after failing to win backing in the hung parliament, prolonging a political deadlock.

The Balkan country has been in political crisis since 2020, when thousands of Bulgarians took to the streets to protest against rampant high-level graft.

A snap election on Oct. 2, the fourth in less than two years, was inconclusive. After the centre-right GERB party of former long-serving premier Boyko Borissov failed to win support for a technocrat cabinet last month, PP also gave up on Friday, raising the prospect of another early vote in the spring.

Row over Bulgarian football official’s ‘no different skin colour in the national team’ remark

January 27, 2023 The Sofia Globe staff

Controversy has ensued after Bulgarian Football Union technical director Georgi “Gonzo” Ivanov was quoted as saying that as long as he held that post “a foreign player, with a foreign passport, with a different skin colour will not play in the Bulgarian national team”.

Bulgarian National Radio reported on January 24 that Ivanov, formerly a top Bulgarian football star before entering management, had said that only Bulgarians should play in the Bulgarian national team.

“I don’t want footballers from other countries to replace the Bulgarian ones. In some countries, this can happen, but for me it’s a vicious practice,” he was quoted as saying.
(...)
Ivanov said in a statement issued via Bulgarian news agency BTA that his words had been taken out of context.

“It is definitely not a matter of racial or ethnic discrimination,” he said.

“My principled position is clear – footballers of Bulgarian origin and Bulgarian self-awareness should play in the Bulgarian national team, regardless of whether they were born in the country or not. I stand by my words that my desire is to watch Bulgaria with Bulgarian players and I believe that the football public will agree with that,” Ivanov said.

“I am aware that my line can be interpreted in all sorts of ways, especially when it is taken out of context, but for me it is important to distinguish between club and national teams. While in club you can transfer players from all over the world – something, which I also did as a director, in the nationals it is about a cause that cannot be bought or faked,” he said.

Bulgaria Parliament’s Declaration Adds Tension With North Macedonia

MPs' declaration in Sofia condemning alleged 'anti-Bulgarian campaign' in North Macedonia includes threat to again halt North Macedonia's EU integration.

Bulgaria’s parliament on Thursday adopted a declaration condemning the recent attack on a Bulgarian activist in neighbouring North Macedonia, an alleged “anti-Bulgarian campaign” in the country and warning that this could derail Skopje’s EU integration.

The MPs’ declaration expresses concern that “the escalation of the anti-Bulgarian campaign in North Macedonia may threaten the process of inclusion of Bulgarians in the country’s constitution” and so endanger North Macedonia’s EU accession, which would “serve the interests of third-party countries”.

This was an apparent reference to Russia, which opposes further EU and NATO enlargement in the Balkans, though the declaration does not explicitly name which countries it is referring to.

Bulgaria: 18 NGOs sign declaration against hate speech and for banning of pro-fascist Lukov March

February 16, 2023

Representatives of 18 non-governmental organisations signed on February 16 a declaration “Against the hate that divides us” that states rejection of hate speech and calls for the banning of the Lukov March.

Held annually in Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia since 2003, the Lukov March, organised and backed by extreme far-right groups, is a torchlight procession in honour of Hristo Lukov, who led the pro-Nazi Union of Bulgarian National Legions at the time of the Second World War.

Lukov was assassinated on February 13 1943. The march, which culminates outside his central Sofia house, has over the years attracted participation of neo-Nazi groups from elsewhere in Europe and the world.

Before departing Warsaw on Wednesday, Biden will hold talks with leaders of the Bucharest Nine, a group of countries from the easternmost parts of the NATO alliance that have come together in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Putin, AP adds.
