Early settlement of Australia
Botany Bay
The story of the Convicts transported from Ireland to Australia, 1791 - 1853 This is the story of 45,000 Irish convicts (men and women) transported to Australia between 1791 and 1853. The majority of the transportees went in the 212 convict ships which sailed from Dublin or the Cove of Cork. The others were included in the convict fleets from England. The book investigates the social background of the period and the procedures under which the accused were tried, imprisoned and transported. A grim picture of life in the prisons, hulks and convict ships emerges. On arrival in Australia the bewildered transportees faced further hardship and prejudice. But it is not all a story of depression and degradation. The bulk of the men and women found a tolerable life in the new land. A good number of them eventually became prosperous and encouraged their families to join them in Australia. The Irish contribution to the making of Australia has been well acknowledged and celebrated in recent times. Published 1987. Best I've read on the early settlement of Australia. |
