Autopsy Results Confirm The Montreal College Shooter Took His Own Life

Thursday September 14, 2006

Kimveer Gill died the way he wanted - on his own terms.
In an autopsy report released just before the dinner hour on Thursday, Quebec officials confirmed that the gunman who wounded 19 people and killed an 18-year-old at Montreal's Dawson College, turned his own weapon on himself as authorities closed in.

A Quebec Provincial Police spokesman now says cops hit Gill in the arm as they fired at him during a cafeteria siege. When he was hit, he quickly turned his rifle around, aimed it at his head, and pulled the tirgger.

It's a common outcome of so-called spree killers and refutes an earlier claim by Montreal police that they fired the shots that felled the assassin.

The 25-year-old Laval, Quebec native used a rifle and two other weapons to pick off students as he walked into the school during the noon hour Wednesday.

When it was over, Gill and one of his victims were dead and 11 others would be struggling for life in hospital.

Gill kept an online blog at a vampire-related website, and it reveals a disturbed young man who despised the world and was obsessed with death.

"His name is Trench. You will come to know him as the Angel of Death," he wrote in his personal journal at vampirefreaks.com.

"Work sucks ... school sucks ... life sucks ... what else can I say? Metal and Goth kick ass. Life is a video game, you've got to die sometime."

He also related a wish to "die young and leave a mangled body".

His decription of himself is both revealing and chillingly ironic. "He is not a people person," he wrote. "He has met a handfull (sic) of people in his life who are decent." But he finds the vast majority to be "worthless, no good, kniving, betraying lieing (sic), deceptive."

One other observation is also prophetic.

"I think I have an obbsetion (sic) with guns . . . muahahaha," he put below a shot in which he aims a rifle at the camera.

His ramblings also relate his likes - "Super Psycho Maniacs roaming the streets freely," massacres, trenchcoats, destruction and "crushing my enemies skulls" - and dislikes, which are summed up in six short words: "The world and everything in it."

And in what may be a key insight into the events that would unfold on Wednesday, he expands on that list to include jocks, preps, country music, Hip Hop and "all those who oppose my rule."

He also expresses an extreme hatred for authority, including police and "all the government on Earth," while pouring out his contempt for "bible-thumping know-it-alls" and God.

A recent picture he posted is also chilling. It shows a tombstone with his name on it. The epitaph reads, "Lived fast, died young, left a mangled corpse."

The 6'1" adult was heavily into alcohol, junk food, horror movies and violent video games. He lived with his mother and borrowed her car to head to the campus.

In at least one message, he describes wanting to die like "Romeo and Juliet - or in a hail of gunfire", while pointing out how much he hates everything in life - including life itself.

His last posting came at 10:41am Wednesday - just two hours before the gunfire began at Dawson College in downtown Montreal. It doesn't make any specific mention of what was about to happen, but it showcases a highly disturbed young man who was apparently ready to go over the edge.

Pictures posted to the website show Gill pointing a rifle at the camera, and noting "anger and hatred simmers within me". It was an anger police believe boiled over and emerged at the campus during the noon hour.

A man dressed in a long black coat and sporting a Mohawk arrived at the school just after 12:30pm with a mission. He removed three guns from a car, one of them a semi-automatic rifle.

What happened next will be forever written in the memories of those who survived. The man began coldly and randomly shooting at anyone he could find, before moving inside to the cafeteria and more terrified targets.

He wounded at least 19 overall and killed one, a student identified as 18-year-old Anastasia DeSousa of Montreal.

Six of his victims are in intensive care, and two of those remain on life support in hospital.

For at least 15 minutes, the gunman's rampage continued, as he took out his self-professed rage on anyone he saw.

Students fled in terror as word of his presence spread at the 10,000-strong campus.

Police would soon catch up to the killer, cornering him in the lunch room and demanding he put down his weapons.

A terrifying but short battle saw authorities and the killer exchange gunfire - even as other rescue workers got trapped students to crawl on their stomachs away from the shooting gallery.

When Gill took his own life, the crisis ended.

But the echoes of those ricochets will linger for years to come for those who experienced the horror.

"You don't believe it at first," student Matthew Wall admitted. A female friend of his was shot twice and had been treated in hospital but was not believed to be among the critically injured.

"Not something that happens regularly, so you don't know what to think. It's not a fire drill or something. It's serious. The real deal. It's hard to process."

"He looked really mad," 17-year-old Mathieu Dominique said of the gunman. "He was really into (the) shooting. . . He looked like he really wanted to kill people. . . . It was like, bullet after bullet. It was like a burst - like at least six shots in two seconds."

Soher Marous recounted the description of many when asked about the shooter. "He had a stone-cold face, there was nothing on his face," the student remembered. "He didn't yell out any slogans or anything. He just started opening fire. He was a cold-blooded killer."

The scene was one of terrible confusion for hours, with reports surfacing that as many as four gunmen were roaming the halls of the school. That forced the shutdown of the busy subway for a time, as officials worried they'd make an anonymous getaway.

In the end, though, there was only one man behind it all. But the complete reasons for his final actions and why he chose Dawson College may have died with him.

The sprawling school, now a large crime scene, will remain closed until at least Monday.

This is just one of the many, many benefits of multi-culturualism. Ain't diversity grand.
