Less than 24 hours after assailants killed multiple victims in a kosher grocery in Jersey City, New Jersey, former NYS Assemblyman and former Jewish Defense League activist Dov Hikind posted online chilling footage captured in the hours subsequent to the bloody attack.

World Israel News reported that in one of the clips, a young man asks a Jewish first responder, “Four [Jews] are dead, right? If they’re dead and they got shot, that’s great.”

Another bystander comments, “I blame the Jews! We never had a shooting like this until they came here.”

“We can’t do it to them?” she added, referring to the attack as “Jew shenanigans.”

WIN also reported that another person can be heard yelling, “Get the damn Jews the f**k out of here! Get the Jews out of Jersey City.”

Hikind commented on the footage, “As Jewish bodies were still laying in cold blood after being murdered by terrorists in Jersey City, a representative of Americans Against Anti-Semitism captured spontaneous anti-Semitic tirades blaming Jews for their own murder and people cheering it on.”

The attack on a Jersey City kosher grocery is being investigated as an act of domestic terrorism motivated by anti-Semitism and police hatred, authorities announced. Six people including the attackers died in Tuesday's shootout.

The investigation into the shooting at JC Kosher Supermarket is now a domestic terrorism probe, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and New Jersey US Attorney Craig Carpenito told reporters on Thursday, adding that the violence was believed to be motivated by anti-Semitism and hatred of law enforcement.

“The evidence points towards acts of hate,” Grewal said.

New Jersey's Jewish community was shaken by reports that the suspects involved in the gun battle in Jersey City Tuesday had deliberately targeted a kosher deli where three bystanders were killed, although authorities stopped short of calling the incident an anti-Semitic attack.

Video surveillance footage showed that the two suspects — identified as David N. Anderson, 47, and Francine Graham, 50, both of whom were killed — opened fire on the JC Kosher Supermarket with long rifles immediately after arriving across the street in a white U-Haul van deli at 12:21 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said. Both suspects then entered the store.

In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy expressed solidarity with the state's Jewish community, saying, "An attack on our Jewish community … is an attack on all 9 million of us who are proud to call ourselves New Jerseyans."

But amid media reports linking Anderson to the Black Hebrew Israelites, considered an anti-Jewish hate group, Grewal and other law enforcement officials cautioned that the investigation into a motive for the attack was still ongoing.

In the meantime, Jewish leaders said they were deeply disturbed by the emerging narrative of the attack.

“The Jewish community is shaken,” said Evan Bernstein, the New York and New Jersey regional director of the Anti-Defamation League. “We want to get the details and understand what happened.”"

"This potentially may be the worst anti-Semitic incident in New Jersey, it is very possible," added Avi Schnall, the director for New Jersey's Office of Agudah Israel of America, an organization that represents the interests of the Orthodox Jewish community.

The shootout coincides with a rising tide of anti-Semitism across the nation.

It comes just over a year after the October 2018 shootings at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh which killed 11 people and wounded seven. The incident was the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the United States and the most anti-Semitic homicides in a single year in U.S. history, according to the FBI.

New Jersey had the third most anti-Semitic incidents in the country in 2018, behind California and New York, according to an annual report by the Anti-Defamation League. The New York-based nonprofit organization tracks such incidents from police, school and other reports.

Jersey City’s Jewish mayor didn’t wait to call the kosher store shooting an anti-Semitic attack. Here’s why.

(JTA) — Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop was one of the first New Jersey officials to describe Tuesday’s shooting at a kosher market as a hate crime motivated by anti-Semitism.

He did so on Wednesday, a day before the state’s attorney general did.

“Had I said that we were unsure of the motives or the reasons or whether it was a hate crime, I feel like it would’ve jeopardized my relationship with the community, the trust I’ve built, and at the end of the day we would have looked very foolish,” he told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in a phone interview Friday. “So I knew at the time, based on the circumstances, that it was a hate crime.”

On Friday, Fulop added another chilling piece of information about the shooting that left six people dead, including the two assailants: He believes the suspects had been targeting the yeshiva next to the store where 50 kids were studying.

Police also found an active pipe bomb in the van they drove from a cemetery, where they shot and killed a police detective, to the JC Kosher Supermarket, the scene of a shootout that lasted more than an hour and resulted in five more deaths.

The attack hurt Fulop both as the mayor of the city and as a Jew.

“Any time there’s hate or targeting of one religious or racial group, I’m saddened by it,” he said. “It’s obviously personal for me in this situation because [it was] targeting the faith that I am part of.”

Following the attack, Fulop worked with the Met Council, a Jewish charity organization, to distribute kosher food to the Orthodox community surrounding the market for Shabbat. The community, in Jersey City’s diverse Greenville neighborhood, is made up of nearly 100 families who have moved from Brooklyn in recent years.
