(JTA) — Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden accused President Donald Trump on Thursday of fanning the flames of anti-Semitism.

Biden made his remarks in a post on Medium a week after two gunmen stormed a kosher grocery in Jersey City, New Jersey, killing three civilians. They had killed a policeman earlier at a nearby cemetery.

The former vice president decried the “tide of hatred” that he said had fueled anti-Semitic mass shootings in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California, and condemned the president for failing to take the lead in rooting out extremism and racism.

Citing Trump’s widely criticized response to 2017’s Unite The Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia — the president said there fine people on “both sides” of the clashes there — Biden wrote that by declining to condemn “a naked display of hatred, Trump assigned a moral equivalence between those streaming through the night with torches, chanting anti-Semitic bile — and the courageous neighbors and activists who stood against them.”

Such rhetoric, he said, gave “license and safe harbor to white supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and the KKK.”

The response to the Jersey City shooting exemplifies the dangers of not taking Hasidic Jews seriously

(...) The ultra-Orthodox community is culturally and visibly different than any other group of people with whom you normally interact, and therefore our very existence sometimes provokes a wide range of emotions, from curiosity to contempt.

But it is important to keep in mind that these characteristics can make us easy targets for anti-Semites — and “othered,” sometimes even by our fellow Jews. Some of the assumptions about ultra-Orthodox Jews play into classic anti-Semitic tropes: We are often depicted as stingy, greedy, noisy and unfriendly. On the flip side, our communal piety is also sometimes overly romanticized and glorified.

As a very distinct group, we are easily identifiable and easily branded. It takes only a few headlines to turn us all into slumlords, sexual predators or saints. But we aren’t any of that. We are a community with shared values and traditions, but that doesn’t give us all the same character traits.

When we are being ridiculed or mocked for the way we dress or speak, it isn’t funny, it is worrying. When officials and neighbors in Jackson, New Jersey, or Rockland County, New York, single out Hasidim as bad neighbors or as a “threat to our quality of life” and tailor zoning laws to limit the community’s natural growth, it should be seen for what it is: good old-fashioned anti-Semitism that eventually leads to the sort of violence we saw last week in Jersey City.

When Hasidim are harassed and targeted online or on the streets, they are not isolated events but a revelation of deeper anti-Semitic hatred that must be uprooted and fought with the same might as any other form of anti-Semitism.

The murderous event didn’t happen in a void — it came after years of ignoring hate and mockery of Hasidic Jews. Our community hasn’t been taken seriously, and it is time for this to change. Jewish solidarity isn’t just soul-comforting — it saves lives. If we have the support of our Jewish brothers and sisters, we will feel a bit safer in our streets and such tragedies may be prevented in the future.

Knife-wielding goons harass Brooklyn teen with anti-Semitic taunts

A pair of goons flashed a knife as they yelled “Hey Jew boy” at a Brooklyn teen — the latest in a string of unsettling anti-Semitic incidents in the Big Apple, law enforcement sources said Tuesday.

The hate was spewed as the 17-year-old victim was walking on Avenue O near 8th Street at around 7:30 p.m. Monday, the sources said.

Police are hunting for a sicko who allegedly spat on a Jewish woman after trying to enter a Queens yeshiva last month — an incident that brings the number of recent reported anti-Semitic attacks to at least 14.

The suspect attempted to barge into the Talmud Torah Siach Yitzchok school on Central Avenue in Far Rockaway around 9:40 a.m. Dec. 24, but was stopped by school staff, the NYPD said Friday.

The 13th incident in a holiday-season surge in violence against Jews was revealed when law enforcement sources said that three brutes accosted a 66-year-old Jewish man on Dec. 24 and said: “Jew, Hitler burned you, I’ll shoot you.”

Two female attackers yelled “F— you Jew” and “I will kill you Jews” at a Brooklyn man before shoving him to the ground when he tried to film their anti-Semitic screed, law enforcement sources and witnesses said Wednesday.

The two African American women approached the 22-year-old Hasidic victim at Gerry and Rutledge Streets in Broadway Triangle where they began taunting him with anti-Semitic slurs, the law enforcement source said.

Head of militant Jewish group plans to ‘confront’ black leaders in NYC

The leader of the militant Jewish Defense League says he is soon coming to New York City to confront black leaders.

“A top priority for the Jewish Defence [sic] League in New York City will be to expose and confront Black organizations and leaders who spread antisemitism within the Black community,” JDL leader Meir Weinstein said in a statement posted to Facebook Wednesday.

The manager of a New Jersey pizzeria who was accused of going on an anti-Semitic tirade when a delivery driver asked to take a night off on a Jewish holiday has been fired — and the family that owns the eatery has apologized to the teen, according to a report.

Francesco Scotto Di Rinaldi, the manager of Maurizio’s Pizzeria & Italian Ristorante in Eatontown, was axed for the shocking verbal attack, the Schianodicola family told NJ Advance Media in a statement.

CHICAGO (JTA) — Some commentators have used the word “epidemic” to describe the recent spikes in anti-Semitism.

They may not realize how correct they are.

Twenty years ago, upon my return to the United States after serving as a senior infectious disease epidemiologist at the World Health Organization in Africa, I noticed that community violence mimics contagious epidemics and began to suspect that it could be treated and managed in much the same way — using well-known and proven methods for stopping other epidemics.

By seeing violent behavior as transmissible from person to person, I worked with other experts to develop a practical approach to interrupting its spread. In our model, on-the-ground violence interrupters identify potential acts of violence and stop them, and highly trained outreach workers identify those most likely to be violent.

As a member of the Jewish community myself, I have seen group-on-group violence, in particular anti-Semitism, as ripe for the public health epidemic control approach. And given the momentum and spread of this epidemic, we must act urgently, using all the tools at our disposal.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced a new initiative that will apply the Cure Violence Global epidemic control method to address the problem in New York City. (JTA) — The most seriously injured victim of the stabbing attack at a rabbi’s home in Monsey in late December has died.

Josef Neumann, 72, died on Sunday afternoon. Though he remained in a coma from the time of the attack to his death, he had begun to open his eyes in February, leading to calls to keep praying for a full recovery.

The assailant’s knife penetrated Neumann’s skull and cut into his brain. His right arm also was shattered. Four other people were injured in the Dec. 28, 2019 attack.

(JTA) — The suspect in the stabbing of a Boston Chabad rabbi has been charged with committing a hate crime and civil rights offense.

Khaled Awad, 24, was arrested Thursday after allegedly stabbing Rabbi Shlomo Noginsky outside of his school and synagogue in the Brighton neighborhood. Noginsky survived the stabbing and has been released from the hospital, which he called a “miracle.”

Awad was charged initially with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a police officer. Prosecutors now have added the hate crimes charge because they say the attack was motivated by antisemitism.
