More people should visit Yad Vashem, says Romanian foreign minister
Teodor Melescanu called President Reuven Rivlin immediately after visiting Yad Vashem. If more people visited Yad Vashem, negative attitudes toward Jews and Israel might change. This was the view expressed on Monday by Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu when he and his delegation called President Reuven Rivlin immediately after visiting Yad Vashem. Melescanu cited Auschwitz survivor, author and Nobel Prize laureate Eli Wiesel who said negating the Holocaust is not only dangerous but offensive to the survivors. There is a tendency in the world towards xenophobia, racism and antisemitism said Melescan, who warned that such bias could evolve into a tragedy similar to that of World War II unless quickly curtailed. This why Romania promotes the combating of antisemitism, he said. http://www.jpost.com/Israel-News/Mor...inister-508237 |

Bucharest in top three cities with most anti-Semitic posts on social media
Bucharest ranked third in a top of cities where most anti-Semitic messages are posted on Facebook and Twitter, according to data from Israel’s Diaspora Ministry, cited by The Times of Israel. The ministry unveiled last week the Anti-Semitism Cyber Monitoring System (ACSM), a new software that tracks anti-Semitic posts on social media. It can detect how widely these posts have been shared, who is sharing them, and which cities and countries produce the most anti-Semitic content. https://www.romania-insider.com/buch...semitic-posts/ |

Romanian president: Holocaust Museum is vital

Training of Romanian Prosecutors on the Fight against Homophobia and Transphobia in the context of execution of ECtHR judgment in the case M.C. and A.C. v. Romania
10/11/2021 On 8 and 9 November 2021, Council of Europe units (the Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals Programme, the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Unit and the Department for the Execution of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights) in partnership with the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice of Romania organised an online seminar to launch the HELP course “Fight against Racism, Xenophobia, Homophobia and Transphobia” for a group of 17 Romanian prosecutors from different Prosecutor’s offices. The implementation of this course aims in particular to support the execution of the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights delivered in the case M.C. and A.C. v. Romania, concerning the failure of the Romanian authorities to take into account possible discriminatory motives in the investigation of a homophobic attack. https://www.coe.int/en/web/sogi/-/tr...se-m-c-and-a-c |

Romania Makes Holocaust Education Mandatory in All High Schools
17/11/2021 BUCHAREST, Romania — The Romanian Senate has adopted a law that makes it mandatory for all high schools and vocational schools in the country to teach a specific subject on the history of the Holocaust and the Jewish people. The law that passed on Monday stipulates that the course will be taught starting in 2023. Its contents will be decided by the country’s education ministry in collaboration with the Elie Wiesel Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania. In the words of Jewish lawmaker Silviu Vexler, who championed the law, the initiative aims at “countering intolerance and extremism” among youth. The center-right National Liberal Party and the Social Democrats voted in favor of the law, together with the centrist alliance USR PLUS and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania. The law, which was previously passed by Romania’s lower chamber, was supported by 107 senators, while 13 legislators voted against it and one abstained. It was opposed by the populist right-wing Alliance for the Union of the Romanians, or AUR, a nationalist party that received 9% of the vote in its debut in a general election last December and is now the fourth largest party in the country’s legislature. AUR lawmaker Claudiu Tarziu deemed the law unnecessary as he claimed Romania hasn’t seen a single “serious antisemitic case” in the past 20 years. Tarziu said the law was “in contradiction” with Romanian and European Union laws as well as with “common sense,” as it discriminates against “our fellow citizens who belong to other minorities.” According to official statistics included in a report by the Elie Wiesel Institute, a total of 27 antisemitic incidents were reported to authorities in 2020. A number of Jewish cemeteries have been vandalized in recent years. Romanian Jewish actress Maia Morgenstern — who made international headlines for her role as the Virgin Mary in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ” — last March received death threats by an individual who said he would “throw her into a gas chamber.” Antisemitic messages are also rife in nationalist fringe press both online and in print, and historical interpretations of the Holocaust that downplay the role of Romania have been touted by local historians and university professors. According to the Elie Wiesel Institute, between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews were murdered in territories under Romanian administration during World War II. https://www.jewishexponent.com/2021/...-high-schools/ |

Israeli Ambassador slams Romanian party calling the Holocaust 'minor'
A Romanian nationalist said that Holocaust education is part of a "systematic action to undermine the quality of education in Romania." Jan 4, 2022 Israeli Ambassador to Romania David Saranga slammed remarks by a Romanian nationalist party calling for less Holocaust education. The AUR Party said the Holocaust is a “minor topic,” and teaching it as a separate subject in schools is an “ideological experiment” and part of a “systematic action to undermine the quality of education in Romania.” Saranga condemned AUR’s statement, calling them “insulting.” https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/antis...article-691541 |
