Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm on the set of a Western he was making in New Mexico on Thursday, killing the film’s director of photography and wounding the movie’s director, the authorities said.

The cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, 42, was killed, and the director, Joel Souza, 48, was injured around 1:50 p.m. on the set of “Rust,” said Juan Rios, a spokesman for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation.

A tragedy occurred on the set of the latest Alec Baldwin movie where the actor reportedly accidentally shot and killed a female cinematographer and injured the director due to a prop gun misfire.

“Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a set in New Mexico on Thursday, accidentally killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza,” reported Variety.

Sources told Deadline, which initially reported that the incident occurred when Baldwin reportedly “cocked a gun during a rehearsal, unaware that there were live rounds in it, hitting two people, a man and a woman.” Representatives for Baldwin, a rabid anti-gun demagogue, did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.

Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin declared on Friday that his heart is “broken” after he accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the upcoming Western movie ‘Rust’ this week.

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,” Baldwin tweeted, adding that he is “fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred” and is in touch with Hutchins’ husband.

Reports: Chaos Plagued Alec Baldwin Movie Set as Fatigued Film Crew Walked Off Moments Before Fatal Shooting

The crew of the Alec Baldwin movie Rust reportedly experienced on-set gun safety issues prior to Thursday’s deadly shooting incident in which the actor discharged a prop gun, killing the movie’s cinematographer and injuring its director.

While much still remains unclear about the fatal incident that took place on the movie’s New Mexico set, early reports are painting a picture of a production that was already in trouble days before the tragic killing, with crew members allegedly protesting against working conditions.

About a half-dozen camera crew workers walked off the set to protest working conditions just hours before the fatal incident, according to a report in The Los Angeles Times. The camera operators and their assistants were reportedly frustrated by the conditions surrounding the indie film, including complaints of long hours and pay, according to three people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to comment to the newspaper.

The tragic irony of one of Hollywood’s most avid anti-gun activists causing the shooting death of a colleague may sound too far-fetched for a screenplay, but that is exactly what Alec Baldwin is facing after he discharged a gun on a movie set Thursday, killing the cinematographer and and injuring the director.

Law enforcement in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is currently investigating the apparent accident, which occurred on the set of the western movie Rust, on which Baldwin was also a producer. It remains unclear if Baldwin will be charged with any crimes.

The horrific incident shines a strange light on Baldwin’s brand of anti-gun activism, which has targeted the National Rifle Association. The actor joined with Amy Schumer, Jimmy Kimmel, and more than 130 stars in 2018 to form the “No Rifle Association Initiative,” which aimed to take down the NRA.
