Switzerland Draws a Line on Immigration

-Switzerland is a small, prosperous country which during World War II managed not to become part of the Nazi empire and during the postwar era has succeeded in staying out of the EU. Nonetheless, like other European countries whose citizens have voted to stay out of the EU, Switzerland – in exchange for participation in free trade with EU members – has signed treaties that subject its citizens to EU regulations. Among those treaties is a seven-year-old agreement that grants most EU citizens the right to live and work in Switzerland.

In a referendum on February 14, however, the Swiss electorate voted by a slim majority for a proposal by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) that will invalidate that treaty. The Washington Post‘s Anthony Faiola, in his report on the vote, provided a fine example of the way in which the left-wing media routinely reduce real-life concerns to obnoxious caricatures, all the while acting as if the people they’re condescendingly mocking are the ones purveying the caricatures: the Swiss vote, he wrote, was the result of the mischievous efforts of “right-wing populists” who worry that their “idyllic Swiss lifestyle” is “being trampled by hordes of foreign newcomers.” Faiola went on to compare Swiss voters to “the paramilitaries of the Golden Dawn” in Greece and the “anti-immigrant, anti-Roma and anti-Semitic” members of the radical-right Jobbik Party in Hungary. The New York Times took a similar approach: “Far-right parties with anti-immigrant platforms in France, the Netherlands and Norway have gained strength in recent years,” wrote Melissa Eddy and Stephen Castle (the Norway reference obviously being to the center-right Progress Party, which is closer to the American political center than any other party in Norway).

Never mind the reality: Switzerland – where about a quarter of the legal residents were born abroad and 37 percent of residents are foreign-born or have two foreign-born parents – is one of the two countries in the world with the highest percentage of immigrants. (The other is Austria.) The SVP – the same party that sponsored the 2009 law banning minarets – said during the run-up to the plebiscite that the 80,000 EU citizens who are now moving to Switzerland every year (a number equal to 1% of the country’s population) amounts to approximately “ten times the initial predictions back in 2007,” reported the Telegraph.

It doesn’t take much imagination to recognize what a massive burden this flood of immigrants represents – and what a social and culural transformation it entails. As the Telegraph itself seems to acknowledge, the schools, hospitals, public-transport system, and housing market in Switzerland have been “struggling to cope” with the influx. This sort of rapid, dramatic metamorphosis is enough to pose a risk to any country’s social, cultural, and economic stability. Add to this the fact that citizens of Romania and Bulgaria (including innumerable gypsies who, frankly, aren’t looking for honest work but for pockets to pick, houses to plunder, and public property to trash) are now free to settle anywhere they want in the EU – or in countries, like Switzerland and Norway, which have open-border arrangements with the EU. Under such circumstances, the action by Swiss voters isn’t just eminently understandable; it is, quite simply, the responsible thing to do.

Yet such facts on the ground, however compelling, matter little in Brussels. What matters there is the open-borders ideology – and the consolidation and expansion of EU power. The Swiss vote, warned the Telegraph, was “likely to cause anger” among Eurocrats. Faiola noted that the vote had “brought threats of retaliation Monday from leaders across the continent.” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier sniffed that “Switzerland must realise that cherry picking with the EU is not a long-term strategy.” Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn vowed that the Swiss would face “consequences”: “You can’t have privileged access to the European internal market and on the other hand, dilute free circulation.” You would’ve thought that EU-Swiss relations have benefited only the Swiss all these years – that they’re the ungrateful beneficiaries of EU largesse. On the contrary, Switzerland contributes some $600 million a year to the EU budget and dutifully subjects itself to countless EU controls and directives, even though its voters long ago told the EU to take a hike.

But that’s not enough for the EU masters. They can’t stand that a rich country like Switzerland (Norway, too) isn’t fully within its grasp. And for Bern to withdraw itself from the EU’s clutches in the matter of immigration is more than the power-hungry men and women in Brussels can stand. “The message is clear today: free movement of people is a sacred right for the EU,” said European Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde-Hansen.

Yes, “sacred.” How interesting to learn that this, of all things, is what’s “a sacred right for the EU.” We know, after all, that freedom of expression doesn’t make the cut: in 2006, the European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy (i.e. Flunky in Charge of EU-Arab Relations) told journalists that self-censorship for the sake of “mutual respect and understanding” between cultures was “a vital part of the fight against racism and xenophobia” and that freedom of expression doesn’t mean “the freedom to insult or offend”; in 2007, the EU made “incitement of racism, xenophobia, or hatred against a racial, ethnic, or religious group” punishable by up to three years behind bars; the EU’s 2007 Lisbon Treaty provides for automatic arrest and extradition of persons accused of racism and xenophobia.”

So, no, freedom of speech isn’t “sacred” in the EU. What’s “sacred” is the right of busloads of gypsies to cross into Switzerland and start gathering up goodies. What person in his right mind wants to belong to a congregation for which this is what’s holy? Good for Switzerland’s voters. More power to them.

Athens crackdown shows no hospitality for illegal migrants

From their makeshift shop outside an Athens metro station – a bedsheet strewn with fake Prada handbags and Louis Vuitton wallets – Amer and his colleague Souli take turns looking out for the police in case they need to make a quick escape.

The two west African street traders are survivors of a once-thriving community selling cut-price merchandise to impoverished Greek consumers in squares and pedestrian zones around the city centre.

“There used to be hundreds of us, maybe more than a thousand . . . We made OK money and the bosses paid off the police,” says Amer, who entered Greece illegally three years ago. “Now many people have gone back and some are shut up in camps.”

The street traders are prime targets in an unprecedented government crackdown on illegal immigrants, bizarrely codenamed “Xenios Zeus” after the ancient Greek god of hospitality.

Others include unemployed workers, mainly from Pakistan, whose jobs in Greece disappeared because of the economic crisis; Afghans and Iraqis trying to make their way to northern Europe; and, until recently, when they were acknowledged by the government as refugees, Syrians fleeing the country’s disastrous civil war.

Launched in mid-2012, the crackdown has been the most visible – if controversial – move by Antonis Samaras, the Greek prime minister, to address the public’s boiling resentment at immigration. That sentiment – increasingly evident across Europe – has been one of the prime fuels for the alarming rise of Greece’s far-right Golden Dawn party, which has siphoned support from Mr Samaras’ centre-right New Democracy party.

Nikos Dendias, the citizens’ protection minister, called Xenios Zeus “a huge success”, arguing that the operation has made residents of the capital feel safer, reduced crime rates and improved Greece’s credibility with its EU partners as an effective guardian of the union’s eastern border.

“It’s not so much about the numbers of migrants that have gone, but the common understanding now that Athens is a safe and well-organised city,” he told the Financial Times.

Yet Xenios Zeus has attracted criticism from both Greek and international human rights organisations for permitting unacceptably harsh treatment of migrants, sometimes in violation of international law.

Several thousand migrants without valid papers are being detained for up to 18 months in closed camps around Greece, often in squalid conditions. Detainees held in a former army barracks outside the southern town of Corinth, for example, have staged protests against poor food, lack of hot water and access to medical treatment and legal aid.
Local doctors have refused to enter the camp to examine detainees, instead offering brief consultations and providing basic drugs outside the gates, according to officials at the Athens branch of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

“Both international organisations and local NGOs have problems getting access to the camps but the information we have is that conditions fall well below international standards,” said Ketty Kehayioylou, a UNHCR spokesperson in Athens.

About 30,000 migrants without valid permits to stay left Greece last year, most through voluntary repatriations funded by EU member states and arranged by the International Organisation for Migration.

The capital’s Pakistani community shrank by more than half as work dried up and violent attacks by Golden Dawn supporters became a daily threat, says Javed Aslan, a community leader.

“The violence has tapered off since the Golden Dawn leaders were put in jail . . . There are many fewer attacks but the atmosphere is still one of fear,” Mr Aslan said.

“Businesses that served our community are closing because so many people have gone home. And there aren’t many new arrivals . . . Word is out that Greece has become a tough place for Asian immigrants.”

In the rundown Agios Panteleimonas district of central Athens, whose streets have been visibly cleared of foreign faces, many residents welcomed the crackdown.

“Something had to be done . . . There were incidents every day – immigrants attacking each other, rightwing vigilantes getting children to throw stones at immigrants, the police nowhere to be seen,” said Afrodite Gouma, a retired teacher. “It was an intolerable situation.”

Mr Dendias cites a dramatic fall in numbers of illegal immigrants following the construction of a 10.5km metal fence, patrolled by 1,800 police officers, along the most accessible section of Greece’s northern land border with Turkey.

The Greek coastguard, supported by units of Frontex, the EU border protection agency, has also stepped up patrols in the waters between the Anatolian mainland and Greece’s eastern Aegean Islands, now the main route for migrants trying to enter the EU from Turkey.

But both the Greek police and coastguard have been accused of organising “pushbacks” of migrants arriving from Turkey in violation of international laws banning collective expulsions. A recent report by Pro Asyl, a German human rights group, documented incidents of beatings and arbitrary detention of migrants by “masked special forces officers”, before they were deported back to Turkey.

On Thursday, a Greek prosecutor banned a private Greek television channel from broadcasting a documentary on the sinking in high seas last month of a boat carrying 28 Syrian and Afghan migrants, allegedly while it was being towed at high speed by a coastguard vessel. Twelve people, mostly women and children, were drowned.

The incident triggered a public outcry and an unprecedented public apology from the head of the Greek coastguard, Vice-Admiral Dimitris Bandias, for the loss of lives. In an appearance before parliament, a contrite sounding Mr Bandias said: “We did what we could.”

New Democracy Rift For Athens Mayor

The ruling New Democracy Conservatives of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will back one of its Members of Parliament, Aris Spiliotopoulos as its candidate for Athens Mayor, creating an instant battle as another of the party’s lawmakers and a former holder of the office, Nikitas Kaklamanis, said he wants the job back and will run against his own party’s choice.

Spiliotopoulos, 47, a former minister of both tourism and education and religious affairs, said he had Samaras’ backing, raising the prospect of how the Premier will deal with Kaklamanis, who said he would create an independent local political group to try to topple the man who beat him, George Kaminis, who is an Independent.

Samaras’ coalition, which also includes the PASOK Socialists, has only a three-vote majority in the Parliament during a tender time when it is being pressed by international lenders to speed the pace of reforms and close a 2.4 billion-euro hole in the 2014 budget and he would be hard-pressed to reprimand or eject Kaklamanis, who said he would soon announce his platform.

Kaklamanis, 67, then would be in the position of being both a member of New Democracy and a separate political group cutting into the base of the party and Spiliotopoulos, draining away votes. Kaklamanis said, “My love for Athens was not opportunist. For me it was, is and will always be Athens First.”

In statements, Spiliotopoulos said he would be rising to “the invitation/challenge for a more beautiful Athens, an Athens whose residents and visitors will feel safety, an Athens capable of fueling the creative forces of us all. For an Athens that we love and want to earn the place that it deserves.”

Sources told the Athens News Agency that the Prime Minister’s office has already commissioned an opinion poll measuring Spiliotopoulos’ popularity with those of the other candidates that have announced their intention to run so far.

These include Gavriil Sakellaridis for main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), Nikos Sofianos from the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and Ilias Kasidiaris from the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) party.

Greek PM Proposes Law to Facilitate New Businesses

The Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras mentioned during a press conference, that licenses for new firms will be granted electronically and in one day thanks to a bill that will be proposed to Parliament. He also mentioned he believes the new law simplifying the procedures will be voted in early April 2014.

“Through our actions we are trying to develop our country’s system so that it is business friendly” noted the Prime Minister, adding that the government is trying to complete this bill in the next few months, and the ministries are all working to prepare this secondary regulatory bill. “We cannot wish for unemployment numbers to reduce. We need to support new businesses. That is the key to increasing employment numbers.”

Greek Farmers Block Athens with Tractors

After unsuccessful negotiations between representatives of Greek farmers unions and the ministers Yannis Stournaras and Athanasios Tsaftaris, the farmers announced that they will be escalating their protests.

Greek farmers decided to continue their struggle in order to push the government to satisfy their demands which they claim are vital for their survival. They have announced a panhellenic rally on Wednesday, February 19 in the center of Athens, Greece. Farmers called all Greek citizens to participate, expressing their opposition to the government’s policy, which afflicts all workers and vulnerable social groups.

Farmers in Thessaly, central Greece carried out a rally on Sunday as a response “to the intransigence of the Greek government,” blocking circulation in main highways of the region.

Moreover, farmers from Serres, northern Greece blocked the Egnatia highway on Sunday noon, for about half an hour, forming a human cordon.

The concept of togetherness

The issue of companionship is largely unknown. Maybe because we have grown accustomed to listen mainly left the term "companion", a term which became characteristic of Bolsheviks everywhere and therefore so today many people abhorred.

From the above we can understand the seriousness of the term companion.

A new poll conducted on behalf of Greek TV channel MEGA by pollster company GPO tried to sketch up the profile of the regular Greek Golden Dawn voter.

The research revealed that the majority of the voters in favor of the Greek neo-Nazi party are mainly men with low incomes. According to the poll, 63 percent of Golden Dawn voters have a low income, while 67 percent are men. 43 percent of the voters are between 25 and 39 years, followed by 24 percent being 40 to 50 years old and 15 percent aged 55 to 64 years. It is noted that 38.8 percent of the people polled and casting their vote for Golden Dawn, identify themselves as belonging to the center-left political area, while 35 percent believe that they are centrists. ATHENS, Feb 19 2014 (IPS) - A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Greece and other recession-hit European countries as they undergo harsh austerity measures in exchange for a bailout. At the heart of it is the Troika, say trade unions, civil society and rights activists.

The Troika – as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Commission (EC) have together come to be dubbed – represents international creditors.

It is increasingly being accused of demanding economic reforms that have driven insolvent countries in South-Eastern Europe into deep recession while undermining human rights.

The International Federation for Human Rights has completed a fact-finding mission in Greece aiming to assess the impact of the crisis on human rights and outline the need to hold accountable those responsible for violations.

“Our visit was aimed at collecting evidence that the austerity measures and structural reforms which the government has had to implement as a condition for bailout have led to a situation where not only economic and social but also civil and political rights and the very democratic foundations on which the state is built are under threat,” Elena Crespi, Western Europe programme officer with the Federation, told IPS.

“Our ultimate goal is also to warn against the risk that what started as a global economic crisis would turn into a global human rights crisis, whose effects can easily be foreseen but might be very hard to contain,” she said.

On Jan. 21, 20 trade unions, human rights and civil society organisations throughout Europe addressed Martin Schultz, President of the European Parliament, asking him to commission a report on the situation of human rights, the rule of law, and democracy in Greece.

“Reading the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, it is hard to find a single article that has not been violated by the Greek government during the last three years as part of the policies it has implemented against its own people,” the letter said.

Greece has borrowed about 230 billion euros (315 billion dollars) in the last four years in exchange for a massive austerity programme overseen by the Troika. The policy has backfired, with the economy sinking into unprecedented recession and unemployment soaring to 30 percent.

Signatories to the letter included the European Association for the Defence of Human Rights (AEDH), an umbrella organisation of 30 groups in 22 EU member states, major Greek trade unions, the 167,000-strong Belgian private sector union CNE as well as smaller political and civil society organisations, including the European Attack Network and the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO).

CEO has launched a new project called Troika-Watch, which aims to create a network of citizens to monitor the body that represents creditors in counties implementing austerity programmes. This will produce a monthly newsletter in nine different European languages.

A resolution proposed by the Committee of Legal Affairs and Human Rights (PACE) was adopted on Jan. 31 by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Its draft recommendations on the “Accountability of international organisations for human rights violations” proposed that “international organisations should be subject to binding accountability mechanisms and that their immunity should be limited.”

According to the Assembly, “member states should also be held responsible for the role they play in international organisations and by assisting them in implementing their decisions.”

Greek MP Notis Marias, a representative of the Anti-Federalist Democrats group in the Council of Europe, who has proposed some of the amendments, said, “The Troika ought to know now that they can’t hide any more behind their immunity in order to avoid Greek courts for the violations of human right in this country.”

Basic wages have reportedly gone down 22 percent since the austerity measures began, unemployment among the youth is over 60 percent and over one million people do not have any kind of medical insurance any more.

In June 2013, the IMF admitted mistakes in handling the Greek debt crisis that caused the recession scenario to deteriorate. But the Troika never produced an impact assessment report prior to requesting social reforms and fiscal measures.

Andreas Fischer-Lescano, professor of European law and politics at the University of Bremen, was appointed by the European Trade Union Confederation to examine the legality of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed between bailed out countries and their lenders. His conclusions came out at the end of January.

In a draft document, seen by IPS, Fischer-Lescano argued that “it is the Commission and the ECB which on behalf of Europe lay down the conditions that are driving millions of Europeans to despair.

“MoUs have to be de-legitimised. There is no obligation to implement illegal provisions. National courts and also international courts such as the European Court of Justice and the European Court for Human Rights and human rights committees will have to clarify this,” he told IPS.

“The legal struggle against austerity is just beginning. The aim must be to defend core principles of social justice in Europe.”

The Greek Council of State has already found unconstitutional an emergency property tax passed in Greece in 2011.

On Jan. 28, the special committee of inquiry appointed by the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament to evaluate the role the Troika played in bailed out countries visited the Greek parliament. It had previously stopped by in Cyprus, Portugal and Ireland.

In Greece, the head of the committee admitted the Troika had committed mistakes but said it fulfilled its role to save the country from bankruptcy. The committee will publish its findings before the European elections in May.

By then a new strong brinkmanship is expected to evolve around the future of Greece’s fiscal consolidation programme, given that the credit put aside for the country is almost used up.

An extra 15 to 20 billion euros (20 to 27 billion dollars) will be necessary to keep the country afloat but many believe this will not come in the form of a new MoU.

Already a German proposal is taking shape that aims to lower interest rates and extend repayment terms for over 50 years.

(Reuters) - Greek magistrates investigating the country's Golden Dawn party have asked parliament to lift the immunity from prosecution of nine of its lawmakers, clearing the way for criminal charges to be brought against them, court sources said on Thursday. Then what's the point of immunity in the first place? What's the point if not to protect them from politically motivated prosecution?

Greece's third-most-popular party, Golden Dawn has faced a government crackdown since September, when an anti-fascist rapper was fatally stabbed by a party sympathiser. All its lawmakers deny wrongdoing and say they are the victims of political persecution.

If parliament votes to lift their immunity, the nine are likely to be charged with being members or leaders of a criminal organisation, the sources said. That would mean all 18 of the party's lawmakers - six of whom are already behind bars pending trial - would have criminal charges against them. That would mean a judge will decide whether they can be held in custody before trial on the new charges, even though some of them were conditionally released on earlier charges last year.

Golden Dawn is expected to perform strongly in the May vote as anger grows at harsh austerity policies and a political elite blamed for the country's economic crisis. Polls show support for Kasidiaris, who is running for mayor of Athens, at 10 percent.

Golden Dawn has vowed to contest the local and EU elections even if its lawmakers are jailed and the party outlawed. It says it has set up a new party called "National Dawn" that would contest the polls if Golden Dawn was prevented from doing so.

The government has resisted calls to ban the party, a move that would require amending the constitution and risks boosting their popularity further.

Golden Dawn, which sports a swastika-like symbol and whose supporters have been seen giving Nazi-style salutes, rose from being a fringe party to entering parliament in elections in 2012. It denies accusations that it is neo-Nazi group behind a wave of attacks against illegal immigrants.

The village of Avato, in the northeastern prefecture of Xanthi, is home to a unique community whose ancestors are believed to have come to Greece from Sudan during Ottoman rule

"Our grandparents were brought here as slaves by the Ottoman beys" - THEY ARE NOT GREEKS!

"What are you looking for, young woman? the village shepherd asks. He's got African looks but speaks in the local accent, a combination that would surprise anyone who accidentally wandered into Avato, a village 26km south of Xanthi, a city in northeastern Greece.

There, away from the eyes of the world, live the black Greeks of Thrace, whose ancestors came to the country during Ottoman rule as slaves of local beys (or governors).

Now Greek citizens, they are confused about their origins. Some believe that their ancestors came to the country as British mercenaries during the first world war. The roots of an entire village is a small detail in the sum of world history.
