Sweden's Moderates ask for more time to agree coalition after election win

Reuters

STOCKHOLM, Sept 28 (Reuters) - The leader of Sweden's Moderate party asked the speaker of parliament on Wednesday for two more weeks to try and form a coalition and thrash out a policy agenda, after his right-wing bloc narrowly won a parliamentary election this month.

94-year-old Resistance Movement member in court for incitement to racial hatred

October 2, 2022

RESISTANCE MOVEMENT. Vera Oredsson appeared in Falu District Court on Monday 26 September, facing two ridiculous thought crime charges.

The “crimes” Vera stands accused of consist of two comments written on the nordfront.se website in 2018. The complainant was the obsessively litigious Juridikfronten. Juridikfronten is responsible for most of the legal reports of racial hatred in Sweden, which demonstrates that the supposedly affected minority groups are rarely, if ever, actually offended by cases like these. Rather, the law is used as a taxpayer-funded cudgel against nationalist political opposition.

Swedish parties agree coalition with backing of far-right

Prospective prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, says three parties will cooperate with the Sweden Democrats

Jon Henley Europe correspondent
Fri 14 Oct 2022 13.03 BST

Three centre-right parties in Sweden have reached agreement on a minority coalition that will depend on parliamentary support from the Sweden Democrats, giving the far-right party direct influence over government policy for the first time.

The leader of the Moderates party, Ulf Kristersson, said on Friday it would form a government with the Liberals and the Christian Democrats after the rightwing bloc won the narrowest of majorities in the country’s 11 September elections.

Sweden’s largest rightwing party, the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, would not be a formal member of the coalition but had agreed to help shape its policy in exchange for backing it in parliament, Kristersson said.

The government’s mandate from voters meant that “change is not only necessary, change is also possible, and we four parties together can offer that change”, the Moderates leader and probable next prime minister said in Stockholm.

ISTANBUL, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Sweden has taken "concrete action" to address Turkey's concerns over its NATO membership bid, including stepping up counter-terrorism efforts against Kurdish militants, Stockholm told Ankara in a letter dated Oct. 6 and seen by Reuters.

The two-page letter gives 14 examples of steps taken by Sweden to show it "is fully committed to the implementation" of a memorandum it signed with Turkey and Finland in June, which resulted in NATO member Turkey lifting its veto of their applications to the trans-Atlantic security alliance.
(...)
Sweden and Finland launched their bids to join NATO in May in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but ran into objections from Turkey, which accuses the two Nordic countries of harbouring what it says are militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and other groups.

Roadside cameras stolen in Sweden may end up in Russian drones – media

A wave of speed-camera thefts in the country is allegedly linked to the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev

Sweden has been hit recently by a wave of roadside camera thefts, with up to 100 units reportedly missing already. Cameras of the same type have been discovered in Russian drones operating in Ukraine, local media reports, suggesting the occurrences might be linked.

At least three more camera units had gone missing from the E16 highway between the towns of Hofors and Falun over the previous 24-hour period, daily newspaper Aftonbladet reported Wednesday. Another two thefts of the devices have been reported by local newspaper Sodra Dalarnes Tidning.

HELSINKI, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Finland and Sweden will joint NATO at the same time, their prime ministers said on Friday, presenting a united front to Turkey which has raised questions about both their applications.

The Nordic neighbours asked to join the alliance in May in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but ran into objections from Turkey which accused the two of harbouring groups it deems terrorists.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Friday Turkey's president had told her he had more questions for Sweden than for her country. But she said she would not leave Sweden behind in the process.

Top Swedish general reflects on hosting NATO nuclear weapons

The country’s commander-in-chief claims it should allow the bloc to use its territory as it see fit

Sweden should not “set reservations at an early stage” before even joining NATO, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Micael Byden told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday. Byden recommended the government present no objections should the US-led military bloc seek to place nuclear weapons or bases on Swedish soil.

The commander-in-chief revealed that the armed forces plan to more than double the number of conscripts to 50,000 by 2035. Stockholm will reach NATO’s required expenditure of 2% of GDP on defense by 2026, earlier than previously believed, thanks to a weak currency and higher costs of military equipment, he added.

Byden’s advice against limiting the bloc’s access to his country’s resources echoed the words of Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, who noted at the same press conference that she did not want to “close any doors” to the alliance. There should not be “any preconditions” to NATO membership, she said.

Sweden: Step up efforts to fight systemic racism, urge UN experts

4 november 2022

While visiting the country from 31 October to 4 November, the members of the International Expert Mechanism gathered information on the existing legislative and regulatory measures for tackling racial discrimination.

“The collection, publication and analysis of data disaggregated by race or ethnic origin in all aspects of life, especially regarding interactions with law enforcement and the criminal justice system, is an essential element for designing and assessing responses to systemic racism”, said Chair, Yvonne Mokgoro.

“Sweden needs to collect and use this data to fight systemic racism”.

Sweden to distance itself from Kurdish groups in bid to join NATO

Reuters

STOCKHOLM, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Sweden's new government will distance itself from the Kurdish YPG militia as it tries to win Turkey's approval to join NATO, Sweden's foreign minister told Swedish Radio on Saturday.

The Syrian Kurdish YPG militia and its political branch PYD are considered by Turkey extensions of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which launched an insurgency against Turkey in 1980 and is regarded as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

NATO hopeful reveals stance on hosting nuclear arms

Sweden will not allow the bloc’s weapons of mass destruction to be stationed on its territory

Sweden will not permit NATO to position nuclear weapons on its soil, Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom told local news outlet TT on Friday, clarifying comments made earlier this month by the country’s defense minister.

“It is still the long-term Moderate Party position” to forbid nuclear arms on Swedish soil, Billstrom said, explaining “we have never intended to change the conditions for the applications submitted by the previous government.” Led by PM Ulf Kristersson, the Moderates took power in September after years of governance by the Social Democrats.

Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Micael Byden last week told reporters that Sweden should not “set reservations” on NATO’s use of its territory before finalizing its accession to the bloc, refusing to rule out hosting the alliance’s nuclear weapons as he pledged to increase military spending and double the number of conscripts in the Swedish military. His words elicited an outcry from the Social Democrats, who demanded an explanation as to why the new government had abandoned the parties’ agreement not to host atomic weapons.

Reuters

STOCKHOLM, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Sweden will deliver new military aid worth 3 billion crowns ($287 million) to Ukraine, its biggest package of defence material to date which included an air defence system, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said.

Previous arms contribution by Sweden, which has applied to join NATO along with neighbouring Finland, has ranged from simple equipment such as helmets and body armour to rocket-propelled grenades and missiles.

Banning headscarves in Swedish elementary schools is unlawful, top court rules

The Supreme Administrative Court in Sweden rejected plans by local authorities to ban headscarves in early years educational facilities, claiming clothing that expresses religious affiliation is protected by European human rights legislation

December 08, 2022
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

Plans by two municipalities to ban headscarves and similar garments in kindergartens and elementary schools are unlawful, Sweden’s top administrative court ruled on Thursday.

The Supreme Administrative Court, located in Stockholm, ruled that clothes which express religious affiliation are protected by both national and European laws on freedom of expression.

The two municipalities of Staffanstorp and Skurup, in the southern Swedish district of Scania, wanted to prohibit the wearing of the Islamic garments. The former had planned to ban headscarves for children in pre-school and up to and including sixth grade, while the latter proposed banning all head garments for both staff and students of early years educational facilities.

The municipalities have been at odds with the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, over the plans for some time, with the legislature regularly rejecting proposals in recent times.

Swedish prime minister urges energy restraint to prevent shortages

Reuters

STOCKHOLM, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Sweden's prime minister on Friday urged people to use less electricity as cold weather drives up demand, although the grid operator Svenska Kraftnat said there were no imminent shortages despite temporary nuclear outages.

Across Europe, where temperatures are plunging, concern has mounted over whether energy supplies will be sufficient following the supply disruption caused by energy exporter Russia's war on Ukraine.

"As it gets cold, the risks are simply much, much greater and the situation worsens even more today, literally speaking, when Sweden's largest nuclear power reactor Oskarshamn 3 is shut down," Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told a news conference.

Swedish power demand could double by 2035 amid electrification drive

By Reuters Staff

OSLO, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Power consumption in Sweden may double by 2035 from massive plans to electrify industry and society at large, requiring a “historically rapid” expansion of generation and grid capacity, the Swedish Energy Agency said on Thursday.

Electricity demand could soar to as much as 280 terawatt hours (TWh) by 2035 from 140 TWh at present the agency said when presenting a report on electrification requested by the government.

For 2045, the report said it expected electricity demand in a range of 210-370 TWh, based on varying scenarios of industrial development.

Erdogan to Sweden: Don't expect Turkish support for NATO bid after Stockholm protest

Reuters

ANKARA, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Sweden should not expect Turkey's support for its NATO membership after a protest near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm at the weekend including the burning of a copy of the Koran, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.

Protests in Stockholm on Saturday against Turkey and against Sweden's bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have heightened tensions with Turkey, whose backing Sweden needs to gain entry to the military alliance.

NATO hopeful could be ‘shocked’ by Türkiye – Erdogan

Ankara may give ‘different responses’ to Stockholm and Helsinki on their membership bids, the president has said

Türkiye may rule differently on the NATO applications of Finland and Sweden, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told an audience of youth in the Bilecik province on Sunday, hinting that “Sweden would be shocked when we respond differently to Finland.”

“But Finland should not make the same mistake,” the Turkish leader warned.

The two Nordic nations had both reached an agreement with Türkiye in June on joining the US-led military bloc, pledging not to provide support to groups Ankara has designated as terrorists, to extradite terrorism suspects, and to swear off arms embargoes involving any of the trio. In return, Ankara has been expected to support their NATO membership.

However, that pact fractured earlier this month, when Swedish-Danish far-right politician Rasmus Paludan burned a Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in Sweden and vowed to destroy the holy book of Islam every Friday until Stockholm is allowed into NATO.

Erdogan addressed the provocative act in his remarks on Sunday, asking “Did [Sweden] wipe out Islam by burning our Koran?…They just showed how ignoble they are. Denmark did the same.”
