Crews of the fastest MiG-31BM fighters performed refueling in the sky over the Chelyabinsk region

January 9, 2020 - 12:34

In the sky over the Chelyabinsk region, MiG-31BM interceptor-jets of the Central Military District worked out one of the most difficult elements of flight training – refueling in the air.

The fighters went to the specified area of the meeting with the Il-78 air tanker and refueled. The crews made a rapprochement with the tanker at a minimum distance of about 10 meters, carried out the docking of the refueling rod with a cone sensor and worked out the refueling process at a speed of 500 km / h. Only experienced pilots are allowed to fly this complexity, since in these conditions, in order to maintain the required distance, the pilots had to control the power of the engines manually. When working out the flight program, the fighter crews overcame more than 2.5 thousand kilometers and landed at the Shagol airfield.

Performing refueling in the air increases the flight radius of the aircraft by one and a half times, which allows the crews of operational and tactical aviation to successfully perform tasks to ensure the safety of airspace of Volga, Ural and Siberia regions.

The share of modern weapons and equipment of the engineering troops of the Eastern Military District has reached 70%

January 20, 2020 - 08:17

The share of providing engineering troops of the Eastern Military District with modern equipment, weapons and equipment has reached 70%. The main differences of the past year were the large-scale testing of military engineers by natural disasters.

During the year, the engineering divisions of the district received a batch of the latest robotic complexes Uran-6 and Uran-9, which allow performing dangerous work remotely, an armored mine-clearing vehicle BMR-3MA and other most modern specialized samples of equipment. These are kits for deploying temporary roads, a pontoon park for laying temporary crossings over water obstacles, engineering power plants, front-end loaders and other types of equipment. Deliveries of modern equipment will continue.

Last year servicemen of the engineering troops have been severely tested in the course of liquidation of consequences of a number of emergency situations of natural character. This is clearing a giant blockage of rock on the Bureya river in the Khabarovsk territory and providing assistance to the population of the far Eastern regions affected by large-scale flooding. It often happens that military engineers perform tasks in extreme conditions of very low temperatures.

The far eastern engineers passed the nature test perfectly. At the end of the year, about 50 servicemen received state awards and more than 300 department awards for their selfless military work.

Extreme downhill runs year-round: roller skating in summer and ice skating in winter.

00:06 - This is a downhill skating that has no analogues in the world.

00:20 - This is the longest stationary track - 500 meters.

00:31 - Altitude difference more over 8 floors.

00:42 - Designed for both athletes and amateurs.

Published on February 7, 2019

00:40 - Vasily Evstafiev (Senior Instructor for Technical and Technological Work with Museum Objects): Over the past 5 months we have been engaged in the restoration of a "Wespe". This is a German 105 mm self-propelled howitzer.

00:57 - Alexandr Anfinogenov (Instructor for Technical and Technological Work with Museum Objects): This machine was produced in Germany on the basis of units of the German light tank T2. We got it in a state (if evaluated on a 5-point scale) at +2 [2 is an unsatisfactory assessment at school].

01:22 - Vitaly Oboleshev (guide): Between February 1943 and June 1944, over 600 "Wespe" self-propelled guns were manufactured. This type of self-propelled guns received baptism of fire in the summer of 1943 during Operation A Citadel. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is one of the 8 surviving instances. And at the moment this is one of two self-propelled guns that can move.

01:59 - Vasily Evstafiev (Senior Instructor for Technical and Technological Work with Museum Objects): When performing restoration work, we encountered great difficulties. We did not have a muzzle brake on the gun. The carburetor of the engine has fallen into disrepair. The cylinders collapsed from corrosion to such an extent that it was impossible to get the pistons out of there. We had to split them.

02:23 - Alexandr Anfinogenov (Instructor for Technical and Technological Work with Museum Objects): The gearbox was in normal condition and did not have much wear. But it was disassembled due to the fact that all the gaskets were already old and because of this, liquid leaked from it. To do this, we disassembled it and inserted new gaskets. We checked that everything in it worked correctly and installed in its place.

03:37 - Alexandr Anfinogenov (Instructor for Technical and Technological Work with Museum Objects): With regard to this instance, it was disassembled to the last screw. We removed all the rollers and disassembled all the bearings. Wheel bearings have been replaced due to failure. They were completely replaced and all the rollers were removed, washed completely and the old grease was completely removed. We also shot onboard clutches, engine and gearbox. All of them were completely disassembled. As always, the main problem was the lack of information. We had some information on the German T2 but it was also very scarce. And we had no any information about "Wespe". And we had to understand everything in this self-propelled guns ourselves. Well, our guys have a lot of experience with such restorations. So we coped with this task. Of course, many technical solutions surprised us greatly. For example, to dismantle the gearbox, you need to disassemble the entire chassis. For example, to dismantle the gearbox, it is necessary to disassemble the entire chassis, i.e. remove the side clutches together with everything they contain, brake bands, all levers. All this must be removed to pull out the gearbox. If you compare this with our T-34 tank, then for the same thing it will take 45 minutes. There is no need to remove any onboard clutches and etc. You can simply unscrew and put it next to it, even the tank crew can do it. Another huge drawback is that in order to get to the engine you need to remove the gun.

05:20 - Alexandr Anfinogenov (Instructor for Technical and Technological Work with Museum Objects): And now we introduce you to the self-propelled guns that move independently, also it is completely painted and filled with all the necessary fluids and greases. It came here itself. It came here by itself and took its place. Now you can see it in the exposition of the park "Patriot."

During the exercise in Bashkiria, stormtrooper engineers liquidated a secret high-explosive mine production workshop. Equipped with OVR-3Sh modular kits and special shields, they were supposed to raid a building where, according to legend, they made improvised explosive devices, penetrate inside and destroy imaginary fighters.

The OVR-3Sh kit covers the entire body of a soldier with metal, plastic and ceramic plates covered with aramid fabric. This allows for maximum protection, even if an improvised explosive device fires in the immediate vicinity.

Moscow host another session of Defence Ministry Board

January 29, 2020 - 13:23

Today, under the leadership of the head of the Military Department General of the Army Sergei Shoygu, a session of the Board of the Russian Defence Ministry took place in Moscow.

Opening the meeting, the Defence Minister said that it will be dedicated to one of the most important events in the country's social and political life — the President's Message to the Federal Assembly.

"The President paid special attention to the tasks set out in the May decrees and national projects. Their implementation will ensure a new quality of life and dynamic development of Russia, " Sergei Shoigu said.

The Defence Minister stressed that the activities of the Military Department to improve the social security of military personnel were discussed in detail at an expanded session of the Board in December last year.

"In 2019, the development of the system of social guarantees for personnel continued. Almost 5 thousand children of military personnel went to kindergartens. More than 900 military wives were employed. This issue remains a priority for us this year, " Sergei Shoigu said.

In continuation of the topic, the Defence Minister said that the main form of providing permanent housing has become a housing subsidy, which is preferred by more than 70% of military personnel.

The service housing fund is being increased. To date, it is more than 280 thousand residential premises.

In addition, the accumulative mortgage system in the Armed Forces is developing dynamically. The number of participants exceeded 300 thousand people, and more than 110 thousand servicemen have already purchased housing.

The improvement of the social infrastructure of military towns continues. In 2020, 1544 socially significant objects will be repaired.

Last year, more than 100 buildings and structures were completed in military medical institutions.

The use of modern means of air evacuation has saved the lives of more than 1,400 servicemen.

Most military garrisons have telemedicine consultation facilities.

Military education is also developing rapidly.

"In his Message to the Federal Assembly, the President also noted the need to resist attempts to blacken our country and falsify its history. This is especially important on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War," the head of the military Department said.

A whole range of events is dedicated to this event. Among them is the publication of declassified archives of the war period.

Sergei Shoigu recalled that the website of the Ministry of Defence in September last year opened a multimedia section "Fragile world on the threshold of war", which presents unique documents about the beginning of the Second World War. In January, archive data on the liberation of Warsaw from Nazi troops and the Warsaw uprising in 1944 were published.

By May 9, new sections of the interactive service "Memory of the people" will be available.

In addition, the multimedia project "Warlords of the Victory" is constantly updated, as well as the project "Salutes of liberation", which tells about the liberation of the capitals of European States.

Construction of the main temple of the Armed Forces is also continuing. During the celebration of the Great Victory, it will be consecrated.

Active military-patriotic work is being carried out among young people. With the support of the Ministry of Defence is developing Yunarmiya movement, the size of which exceeded 600 thousand people. Last summer, 1812 yunarmiya camps were organized, where more than 114 thousand children and teenagers had a rest.

"Dear colleagues! In his Message to the Federal Assembly, the President highly appreciated the work we have done to improve the Army and Navy. At the same time, the tasks set require us to make certain adjustments to our plans," the head of the military Department said.

Sergei Shoigu also said that the meeting will hear reports of the Deputy Defence Ministers on the main activities for 2020 and subsequent years to address social issues with specific proposals and deadlines for their implementation.

The first coastal missile system (CMS) "Bal" entered service with the Caspian Flotilla (CF)

January 30, 2020 - 12:44

In the Republic of Dagestan, the ceremonial transfer of the "Bal" coastal missile system (CMS) to the Caspian flotilla (CF) took place.

CMS "Bal" is intended for shore defence of places of permanent deployment of ships that provide security in the Caspian sea and land units of the CF.

Crews of the "Bal" CF complex can fire missiles in bursts or make single launches at a given time. For most of the flight, the missile flies above the sea surface, which saves ammunition and makes it difficult to intercept and terminate the missile with air defence systems.

One CMS "Bal" is capable of firing more than 50 missiles simultaneously in a given time.

For reference:

CMS "Bal" is mounted on a high-pass chassis MZKT-7930, which allows the crew to take firing positions on the unprepared coast. The complex is armed with cruise anti-ship missiles with a range of several hundred kilometers.

During the first flight, the necessary checks of updated systems and equipment were performed.

The flight lasted 34 minutes and passed at an altitude of 1,500 m.

As a result of the modernization of the strategic missile carrier bomber Tu-160 carried out at the Kazan Aircraft Plant, the overall efficiency of the aviation complex has fundamentally increased.

Under the current contract, the transfer to the troops of the upgraded strategic Tu-160M bombers will begin in 2021 with a further annual increase in the number of deliveries.

Instrument flight in difficult weather conditions day and night. Pilots of Su-34 bombers completed flight tasks with nine-point cloud cover and in complete darkness, guided only by the indications of aircraft navigation equipment.

Artillerymen of the Central Military District provided fire support to motorized rifles, which attacked an imaginary enemy who captured an important milestone.

The task of the units was to break through the defense of the "enemy". Artillery units hit areas of concentration of reserves and accumulations of manpower and light armored vehicles of an imaginary enemy. To adjust the fire, Orlan-10 drones were used.

I want one of those Mi-24/35 helicopters. Very unique design. There is nothing in the u.s. or NATO inventory like it. I could take the girls from the 'Shiny' music group for rides in it. They would wear their VDV uniforms, of course. I saw a video of this guy in Bulgaria who owns one of those machines. Don't know if it's in flyable condition however, the cost of aviation fuel would be prohibitive.

My favorite Soviet/Russian military aircraft in addition to the Mi-24 are:

Igor Sikorsky's 'Ilya Muromets'--world's first heavy bomber.

Polikarpov I-16--brute of a plane in the 1930s, but obsolete by 1941.

Il-2 Shturmovik

MiG-15

Tu-95

An-225--currently world's biggest plane, used as carrier aircraft for 'Buran' space shuttle.

Sorry Ray, but I’m not able to send you a helicopter tied with a celebratory ribbon

But if you need some information, then I can look for it.

"Штурмовик" is not the name of the aircraft; it is a function that it performs.

Comes from the word "штурм."

This German word came through the Polish language to the Russian language.

It means "assault."

By the way, in the Russian language there is another word that ultimately comes from the same ancient Germanic word, it is "шторм."

It appeared in Russian from the Dutch language (like much in Russian marine terminology).

It means a violent storm at sea.

Tankers check the speed of their reaction by shooting at suddenly appearing targets. Training sessions with the T-80 and T-72B3 crews take place at the Alabino, Golovenki and Mulino training grounds.

Targets, the distance to which is from 700 to 2 thousand meters, appeared in the zone of fire destruction for a short time. The task of tankers is to manage to get into the greatest number of goals. Shooting was carried out from tank guns and from large-caliber anti-aircraft machine guns.

These are shots of tests of the first serial frigate Admiral Kasatonov in the Barents Sea. The test also includes ship systems for setting false targets and passive interference, which protect it from attacks by high-precision missile weapons.

The frigate "Admiral Kasatonov" is also armed with the "Poliment-Redut" air defense missile system, the "Kalibr" and "Oniks" cruise missiles, and modern radio-technical and sonar systems. At the end of the test, the ship will become part of the Northern Fleet.

This is the only military university in the country that trains commanders of the marines, arctic and mountain motorized rifle units.

The military is looking for the victim of an avalanche, skiing down the slope in bundles, reconnaissance targets and shoot at targets in the group. During the training, they also have to improve their skills in orienteering and organizing overnight stays in the mountains.

In flight, the crews performed turns at maximum and afterburning modes of engine operation, diving, ascending spiral, as well as combat turns and "barrels" at an altitude of up to 6000 meters.

In addition, the crews of fighter-bombers destroyed an armored convoy of an imaginary enemy by bombing and firing an aircraft gun at ground targets.

With the help of landing boats of the “Serna” type, marines on the BTR-82A landed on the coast, occupied a bridgehead on the coastline and proceeded to break through the defense of an imaginary enemy. Fire support was provided by the "Sani" mortar units.

The exercise involved more than 1 thousand troops of the Caspian flotilla marine regiment, 20 ships and support vessels, about 200 units of weapons, military and special equipment, as well as Mi-8AMTSh helicopters.

Elements of complex aerobatics as a part of pairs and the interception of supersonic targets are demonstrated by pilots of high-altitude fighter-interceptors MiG-31 in the Perm Territory.

Paired take-offs, divergence from pair, detection and conditional destruction of a supersonic target occurs at speeds up to 3000 km/h. Also, the pilots performed maneuvering at an altitude of about 300 meters, which is one of the most difficult elements of piloting.
