Belgium: Police Use Water Cannon to Disperse Anti-Semitic Rally

Far-right groups converge on Brussels for event featuring anti-Semitic French comedian Dieudonne despite official ban.

Riot police in Brussels Sunday used water cannon to disperse a crowd defying a ban on a gathering of controversial far-right figures including French comic Dieudonne, which critics called an "anti-Semitic hatefest".

Citing a threat to public order, the mayor of the Brussels district of Anderlecht banned both the meeting and any protests connected to it.

But organizers of the so-called "European Dissidents' Congress" - a Brussels bookshop and a group called "Debout les Belges!" (Belgians, Rise up!) - urged supporters to head to the venue for "a surprise", sparking the standoff with riot police.

"It's over. Everyone should disperse calmly," said Laurent Louis, the 34-year-old far-right lawmaker and founder of "Debout les Belges", after police forcefully broke up the crowd of about 500 protesters without making arrests.

"They're coming down on us, I don't want any injured," Louis told the crowd, though about 40 supporters remained outside the venue later.

The event was to bring together a string of far-right figures, including the comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, who has faced repeated accusations of anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and incitement to racial hatred.

Dieudonne, a longtime cult figure in France, shot to a wider notoriety when footballer Nicolas Anelka performed the comic's signature quennelle gesture during a match in Britain.

The quenelle, a stiff armed pose, is defended by its users, including event organizer Louis, as an "anti-establishment" gesture but critics see it as a disguised Nazi salute. It is regularly used by a wide range of anti-Semitic groups, including neo-Nazis and Islamists, who often post pictures online of themselves performing the gesture outside Jewish venues or at holocaust memorials.

Louis had kept the venue a secret until the last moment to prevent it from being closed down.

The organizers immediately challenged the ban before Belgium's state council, which was to issue a fast-track ruling, and around 200 supporters and critics of the event had rallied in Anderlecht early Sunday afternoon, many performing the quenelle.

The Belgian League against anti-Semitism, LBCA, Friday filed a complaint before the Brussels prosecutor against what it called "a day of hate, that would serve as a platform for the worst gathering of anti-Semite authors, theorists and propagandists that our country has seen since the end of World War II."

The Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Centre rallied behind the calls for a ban, dubbing the event an "anti-Semitic hatefest".

"The fact that this hatefest is to be held in Brussels, the capital of Europe, the seat of its Parliament... is a threat to democracy reminiscent of the 1920s Weimar Republic, which brought Europe to the Nazi abyss," the centre's director for international relations Shimon Samuels warned in a statement. Louis had remained defiant despite the ban.

"There are people coming from Switzerland, France, Strasbourg, from all over," he told Belgian television early on Sunday. "I will be there to welcome them and if they want to arrest us, then arrest us."

"Our guests have confirmed they will be coming, and in any event - ban or no ban - you can meet them and spend an unforgettable day," Louis had written on his Facebook page.

Welcome to 'boring' Belgium where even the pigeons are on cocaine

'Well-heeled': street cafes in Groenplaats, Antwerp Photograph: Alamy

Antwerp, Belgium's genteel port city, is now revealed as a global drugs gateway and the cocaine capital of Europe

Quote:

A country probably has to admit to a drugs problem when even its wildlife is on cocaine. As of yesterday morning, an online petition calling on the Belgian government to protect the country's racing pigeons from being doped with performance-enchancing cocaine was 200 shy of its target of 45,000 signatures.

That nefarious pigeon fanciers have apparently been using the drug as their doping agent of choice is a reminder that a nation often pilloried for being boring is also partial to South America's most notorious export.

According to last month's Global Drug Survey, Belgians are the most enthusiastic consumers of cocaine in the world, giving the drug a rating of 5.5/10 compared with just 2.2/10 from Australians, who rated it the least highly.

And last week a scientific analysis of wastewater samples in 45 European cities, conducted between 2011 and 2013 and weighted against the size of their respective populations, concluded that the Belgian port city of Antwerp – not London, as widely reported in the British press – is Europe's cocaine capital.

The hipster district of Antwerp Zuid, a well-heeled place where bars and galleries give way to vintage shops and furniture stores, knocked Amsterdam into second place when it came to the amount of benzoylecgonine – the metabolised compound cocaine forms after it has been in the human body – washing through its sewerage system. Zurich was third and London fourth.

And yet a visitor to the city, home to Rubens and famed for its diamond trade, would find it hard to reconcile genteel Antwerp with its position at the top of the cocaine charts.

Dominated by cycling lanes and tramways, it is a city of green spaces and elegant buildings. Lavender plants fill its traffic islands; people wait for the green man to appear before crossing the road; the police stop traffic so that hundreds of cyclists towing children in small buggies can stage a public protest. Even Antwerp's famed red-light district, reputedly home to one of the biggest brothels in Europe, draws as many curious middle-aged tourists as stag parties.

No wonder many are reluctant to confront Antwerp's edgy reputation. Several Belgian politicians approached for comment declined to discuss the matter. Even those familiar with Antwerp's drug scene were shocked by the claims made for its cocaine usage. "There just aren't more people here doing cocaine than, say, in Brussels or Rotterdam," said Joep Oomen, who runs a cannabis social club that represents some 300 adults legally allowed to grow the drug to meet their personal needs.

Nevertheless, he concedes that cocaine is more popular now than when he came to Antwerp 22 years ago. "It's cheap here, too. When I was 20, cocaine was for people in Hollywood. Not any more."

According to the Global Drug Survey, Belgium is the cheapest country in western Europe to buy cocaine. Local people say that dealers on De Coninckplein, a small, cafe-lined square, close to its Chinese quarter, charge as little as €50 (£40)a gram, half the European average.

Received wisdom suggests Antwerp's proximity to its port, the second busiest in Europe after Rotterdam, ensures a cheap supply of coke, which in turn drives demand.

But Steve Rolles of Transform, a thinktank that advocates reform of the drugs laws, said the truth was more complex: "If there's a demand for a drug, then availability will follow. I mean, it's not like there's a lot of cocaine in Southampton, for example. There has to be something in the social fabric of the place that drives demand."

In the case of Antwerp, a city once famous for its merchants, this something appears to be a new era of embourgeoisement. The Ferraris, Porsches and Jaguars snaking their way past Antwerp's boutique designer shops suggest it is a place on the up.

"Twenty years ago Antwerp was a lot more empty," said Oomen, who puts the city's renaissance down to European integration. "The Flemish region is booming."

A rising middle class and cocaine use appear to be inextricably linked. "Cocaine is popular here, but it is a drug for professionals with money," said Katerine, a student drinking in a bar close to Antwerp Zuid's film museum. "Young people will do cannabis or pills. It is the architects, journalists, lawyers and politicians who do coke."

Daniel, a waiter at a nearby restaurant, suggested the city's rising affluence had seen it become a popular weekend destination for Europe's upwardly mobile, for whom cocaine was now an essential part of their tourist experience. "People come in by plane, by yacht, by boat, by train. You can get here quickly in a car from Holland or France. It's a beautiful city and people want to have a good time when they're here."

The city's reputation as a cocaine hotspot threatens to turn the clock back to the start of the millennium, when it attracted narco-tourists from northern France seeking to score cheap heroin.

Keen to avoid history repeating itself, last year Antwerp's mayor, Bart De Wever, declared war on the illegal drugs scene, tripling the size of the city's drugs squad from 15 to 45 officers and pledging "zero tolerance". He has set himself a formidable challenge. Few cities in the world are as immersed in the cocaine trade as Antwerp.

Around 25% of the cocaine moving from South America into Europe passes through Belgium. And most of this comes through Antwerp's port, the "supermarket of Europe", which has 140,000 employees and 160km of quayside. But only around 2% of the 8m containers passing through the port each year are screened.

"Screening is far from watertight," said Tom Feiling, author of The Candy Machine: How Cocaine Took Over the World. "Law enforcement want us to think that they know the size and scale of cocaine coming in, but the reality is that they just don't know."

The US State Department estimates that around 20 tonnes of cocaine comes through the port annually. But some studies suggest it could be 30 tonnes or higher. Certainly the cocaine cartels are becoming more ambitious. Two years ago the city's port authorities seized a record eight tonnes of cocaine with a street value of €500m, hidden in a container of bananas shipped from Ecuador.

Last year it emerged that hackers, working with the cartels, had breached the IT systems controlling the movement of shipping containers in the port so that they could remove them before they were searched. "It sounds like fantasy and science fiction, but it's the reality," said Calum MacLeod, who is a security expert at Lieberman Software Corporation.

At one time the wholesale trafficking of cocaine through the port was performed almost exclusively by Colombian drug cartels. But, according to a recent article in the Journal of Drug Issues, gangs from Albania and the Philippines are now muscling in. They are aware that Europe will soon outstrip the United States as the main market for cocaine.

All of which means that picturesque, prosperous Antwerp is unlikely to shed its relationship with cocaine any time soon.

Flemish nationalist leader De Wever disowns WWII Nazi collaboration

Right-wing Flanders leader Bart De Wever has disowned Flemish nationalist collaboration with the Nazis in World War II, still a hugely sensitive issue in a sharply divided Belgium.

Allegations of collaboration by Flemish nationalist parties, forerunners of De Wever's own New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), regularly stoke tensions with Belgium's French-speaking community in the south which takes pride in its WWII resistance to the Nazis.

"My own grandfather was a member of the VNV (Flemish National League), the nationalist party which collaborated massively," De Wever told a Holocaust commemoration attended by members of the Jewish community in Antwerp, where he is mayor.

"I want to look at this straight in the eye. This collaboration was a terrible mistake, on all levels," he said late Wednesday on VRT Flemish public TV.

"This is a dark page in history which Flemish nationalism has to look at squarely and never forget.

"Nazism and the Shoah were criminal mistakes. Nobody can deny and there is nothing to soften it," he added.

The N-VA emerged as the single biggest party after Belgian elections last year and joined a coalition government led by French-speaking Liberal Charles Michel.

De Wever however chose to stay out of the federal government, preferring to remain in his Antwerp power base and to continue to push for an eventual independent Flemish state.

Shortly after the elections, Jan Jambon, a close aide of De Wever who was given the interior ministry post in the new government, sparked outrage by suggesting WWII collaborators may have been justified in their action.

De Wever himself angered the French community in 2010 when he accused them of historical amnesia over wartime collaboration within their own ranks.

Many in Flanders believe that the purge that followed the liberation of Belgium mainly targeted Flemish collaborators while prosecutions were rarer in the French south.

Belgium's federal government has pledged to create 5,000 extra places for asylum seekers in migration centres "as quickly as possible", with a further 10,000 to follow by April 2016.

The measure comes as official new figures were made public on Sunday showing the number of people seeking asylum in Belgium has grown from 1,280 in April 2015 to more than 4,000 in August. The government says 60 percent of asylum requests are granted.

Government ministers agreed the increased capacity at a cabinet meeting in Brussels on Aug. 28, in response to the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe.

Belgium's junior minister for immigration, Theo Francken, told reporters at a news conference: "We have decided to increase our operational capacity as quickly as possible because migration is accelerating."

Prime Minister Charles Michel said: "We want to take an approach that is on the one hand firm and rigorous, but also humane."

The 5,000 additional places will bring the total capacity for asylum seekers in Belgium to 28,000 this year, rising to 38,000 in April next year.

Over 1,300 Refugees Arrive in Belgium in Week

Quote:
A total of 1,308 refugees applied for asylum in Belgium during the course of the last week, local media reported, citing government sources.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The number of asylum applications registered last week is almost 11 percent higher than in the previous week, local news website 7sur7 reported on Sunday, citing sources from the

Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum, Migration and Administrative Simplification office.

According to the website, the majority of the refugees who applied this week are from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. However, further analysis of the applications found that the number received from Iraqi

and Syrian citizens has shown a decrease, while the share of Afghans has significantly grown.

Belgium, along with other EU states, is currently facing a migration crisis with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing violence and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa and heading for Europe.

Over 500,000 migrants have arrived in the European Union since the beginning of 2015, according to European Commission estimates.

Belgian PM urges France for Calais solution as migrants head for Belgium

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The Belgian prime minister has urged France to find a solution to the sprawling camps sheltering thousands of Britain-bound migrants at its northern ports, saying the failure to do so was pushing growing numbers towards neighbouring Belgium.

The camp Calais, known as the "jungle" because of its makeshift, squalid conditions, is already a thorn in the side of France's diplomatic relation with Britain, with both sides trying to push responsibility for the migrants onto each other.

As the refugee crisis has spread across Europe, numbers at Calais have swelled to around 4,000 migrants, and another camp has sprung up near Dunkirk. Both ports are ferry or train rides away from Britain.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel wrote a letter to French counterpart Manuel Valls urging France to find a solution for the camps, a Belgian official said.

The two prime ministers will meet in Brussels on Monday.

France has tightened security around the makeshift camp at Calais and Belgian officials say that as a result, migrants are increasingly trying to reach Britain via neighbouring Belgium.

Since December, Belgian police have intercepted hundreds of migrants around the cargo port of Zeebrugge, which had previously not been affected.

"We want a concrete proposal by France on how to deal with the situation in Calais," a Belgian official told Reuters.

In August, Britain said it would contribute 10 million euros ($11 million) to increased French humanitarian assistance and a fast-track asylum process for the migrants at the camp.

The countries also tightened security around the port and Channel Tunnel and combined police operations against people smugglers. However, some migrants are still attempting the dangerous journey across, often at the risk of death.

Default "Dutch" rabbi reports "anti-Semitic" incident at park in Brussels

Quote:
BRUSSELS (JTA) — A young rabbi from the Netherlands said unidentified individuals threw stones at him at a park in Brussels in a suspected anti-Semitic incident.

The rabbi, who is from the Netherlands, told JTA about the incident Saturday on condition of anonymity, citing a desire to have him name “associated with positive issues, and not anti-Semitism.”

He said he was walking through the park in Brussels’ southern district of Forest with a friend when “stones were thrown at us. For one reason only: being visibly Jewish.” No one was hurt in the incident, he said. He did not see the people who threw the stones at him and his conversation partner.

Riot police have descended on the centre of Brussels today after hundreds of far-right protesters hijacked a peace march in the Belgian capital.

They gathered at Place de la Bourse in Brussels this afternoon and unfurled a banner denouncing ISIS before police used a water cannon on the angry crowd.

In scenes that compounded a week of grief for Belgians, protesters calling themselves 'The Nation' were seen making Nazi salutes as they became embroiled in a heated argument with pro-migrant groups.

Default Who are the Jews of Belgium? A primer

Quote:
Reflecting the history of their complicated binational country, the Jews of Belgium form a community that is both defined and divided by its diversity.

A tale of two cities

Brussels, the capital of the federal Belgian state (population 11 million), and Antwerp, the center of one of the world’s biggest diamond markets, are the two poles of Belgian Jewry.

The two communities progressed on parallel tracks after Belgium’s creation in 1830 on land taken from the Netherlands in the north and France to the south. The country’s two communities are so separated by language and worldview that some Jewish couples from those areas consider their union a mixed one.

Amid financial stagnation, secessionist politics have gained traction in the Flemish region. Flemish Jews sought independent representative organizations. In recent years, they clashed with the more dovish Jewish leadership in Brussels on issues connected to Israel.

Default Four more in custody in Brussels as police face "far-right" rally

Quote:
BRUSSELS — The Belgium government sought Sunday to contain criticism of its handling of the Brussels attacks, as investigators launched 13 anti-terror raids in the capital and two other cities and taking four more people in custody.

In central Brussels, riot police used water cannon when scuffles broke out in front of the Bourse, which has become a symbolic rallying point for people to pay their respects to those who died in Tuesday’s suicide bombings. Black clad men carrying an anti-Islamic State group banner with an expletive on it held an agitated rally, but were pushed back by riot police.
