Default Bridging Knoxville's racial divide, leaders speak out

http://www.wate.com/Global/story.asp?s=7879370

In January 2007, police say Channon Christian and her boyfriend, Christopher Newsom, were carjacked, raped and murdered.

Those acts, along with what followed, were felt to help create some of Knoxville's darkest hours in recent history.

The couple was white. The four suspects charged in the case are black.

Five months later, hate groups rallied in downtown Knoxville claiming the black on white crime should've been labeled a hate crime.

"I mean, the perpetrators were from out of town. The people that came in and protested, in unhealthy ways in my opinion, were from out of town. I don't think it reflects who we are in Knoxville," says Mayor Bill Haslam.

The president of the Knoxville Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Ezra Maize, attended the counter rally.

Maize says out of the tense moments, the people of Knoxville remained united.

"I think it was a good learning experience for Knoxville as a whole. There were a lot of not just African-Americans, Caucasians and other ethnic groups that were present there who really disagreed with what was taking place, so it brought the city together," Maize says.

Race relations - where does Knoxville stand?

So where does Knoxville stand now in terms of race relations? "I don't know if I could rate it," Maize says. "I would say that it exists. It is prevalent here. Just as prevalent here as any other city. There are a lot of things, racial things, that take place behind closed doors that people will never know."

Maize also says racial issues in Knoxville aren't just black and white. He says the city is filled with different ethnic groups who may feel victimized at times.

Knoxville's "directional divide"

According to the mayor, one of the city's biggest weaknesses is the "directional divide."

"We think of ourselves too much that way," Haslam explains. "It's one of the reasons we focus really hard on building downtown. We call downtown everybody's neighborhood. And so, that's not just a saying. We need to loose all of this west, north, southeast because it's not healthy and productive."

Part of that divide could be due to Knoxville's racial makeup. Minorities make up a smaller portion of the city's population.

Blacks make up about 16 percent of the city's population. Hispanics and Asians account for about 1.5 percent each.

"I mean, we're not perfect but we have people that really care and really want it to be better. I do think that if you are a Southern, medium-sized town, it's easy to say a minority can never get a fair shake there and I don't think that's true," the mayor says.

What changes would help ethnic groups?

Haslam and Maize both have their takes on ways to bridge Knoxville's racial divide.

Maize says he'd like to see community groups work together on larger, more comprehensive community service projects instead of many individual projects.

Haslam would like to see more businesses move their headquarters to Knoxville, saying it would bring in more diversity as employees make the city home.

The mayor would also like to see more minorities in leadership positions outside of local government.

East Knoxville's economic needs

As for economic growth, downtown is booming. South Knoxville is getting new waterfront development. North Knoxville's Fountain City has undergone recent retail growth and West Knoxville development continues to grow rapidly.

But what about East Knoxville? It has a large African-American population and no major rejuvenation plans to date.

"Our focus in the next four years is going to be what we call the next ring," the mayor explains. "Hopefully, we'll have downtown with real momentum behind it. Then focus on the next ring and the next ring as you go east is the Magnolia Avenue Corridor and the 5 Points Area."

But the mayor warns, the city can't solely support growth in any part of town.

"But some of those things, government can do. The development out west didn't happen because government made it happen. It happened because the market developed and people. Markets followed where the people were. And what we have to do is create the climate for success east," Haslam says.

Angry Oh God....another white idiot

It's probably a really good thing I'm alone most of the time when I read shit like this. God, white people can be so damn stupid. I'm sorry...........after reading what Eve Carson's father said, this just leaves me speechless and disgusted.

How can white people react like this in the face of unfathomable violence perpetrated against whites by niggers? It's times like this I wish I really believed in the SHTF theory and this idiot gets his comeuppance. Unfortunately, I just don't believe it's ever really going to happen. I just think we're doomed.

The mayor of Knoxville is a sniveling white hating nigger lovin' shit talking coward. I think maybe we need to go protest City Hall on our next visit to teach this jackass a lesson or two.

Haslam is a jew who goes to a Presbyterian church. He's a gun-grabber.

[Here.]

His home address and phone number (publicly available info):

William Haslam

As for that article, note how it is written. It says "police say" Channon and Chris were carjacked, raped, and murdered. Maybe they weren't?

It's my experience that any time some "politically incorrect" crime happens, the acknowledgement of which rubs liberals and jews the wrong way, it is referred to - if at all - in the language of "they say," "he says," even when the thing is patently a fact.

For example, in Nashville years ago a city official who opposed building a football stadium there was stabbed by a pro-stadium maniac. He went to the hospital and almost died. The Nashville Tennessean (local paper) was pro-stadium - and after an outcry it reluctantly printed a little editorial about the stadium controversy that mentioned the stabbing. But it was written, "so-and-so, WHO SAYS he was stabbed." "He SAYS he was admitted to the hospital," etc. (A matter of record, but they wouldn't investigate - just content to say "HE SAYS" in order to throw doubt on established and easily confirmed facts...)

Anyhow, continuing with how the Channon-Chris article is written...notice also this line: "[the crime], along with what followed, were felt to help create some of Knoxville's darkest hours in recent history." In other words, this writer is saying that Knoxville's dark hour was caused by the crime against Channon and Chris (which has only a conditional reality: police SAY it occurred) AND was caused also by "what followed" (which has full reality): the rally. She is saying what's dark about the whole thing was the rally. If the rally hadn't occurred, then the Channon-Chris rape-torture-murder would not have been so dark, according to her. Hell, maybe it didn't even happen, anyway. After all, it's only a claim: "police SAY."

If some of these reporters had their heads carved off, I wouldn't shed a tear, would you?

HERE is the writer of that article.

Miami, FL? Uh...isn't that "out of town"? That makes Tearsa her an out-of-towner, too, doesn't it? Or at least "sgruber SAYS" Miami, Florida is out of town. (I can be a journalist, too!)

Her MySpace HERE.

The media: With the turn of a phrase, they can change everything. Use a different word and suddenly something has a whole new meaning or slant. This is how they poison the minds of people too lazy and indifferent to think for themselves.

How else could you take the onus off the savage beasts who committed this crime and put it on those of us who were just trying to be sure it didn't get swept under the rug. I hate the goddamn media. They are worthless liars.

Oh, and take the hair off this afreakan and she'd look just like a nigger male.
