Italy probes death of 10-year-old girl linked to TikTok

Italian prosecutors have opened a probe into the accidental death of a 10-year-old girl who allegedly took part in a "blackout challenge" on the video-sharing network TikTok.

The girl died in a Palermo hospital on Wednesday after being discovered by her five-year-old sister in her family bathroom with her mobile phone, which was seized by police.

TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, said it had not managed to identify any content on its site that could have encouraged the girl to participate in any such challenge, but was helping the authorities in the probe over possible "incitement to suicide".

The denizens of TikTok have swarmed to other platforms en masse after widespread technical issues on the app, as desperate users report losing their videos and followers, while others remain locked out of the site altogether.

Tens of thousands of netizens reported problems on Down Detector on Tuesday, with TikTok itself acknowledging the glitches in a brief statement, saying it is working “quickly” to return the site to working order.

A UK woman’s attempt to poach eggs using a viral TikTok hack backfired horribly after the experiment egg-sploded in her face, leaving her with ghastly burns. Her recorded public service announcement warning other home cooks against the practice currently boasts over 120,000 views on the video platform.

“I’ve literally burned my full face and my neck off,” described Chantelle Conway in a July 4 clip detailing her experience with the time-saving TikTok shortcut, in which online epicures allegedly poach eggs to runny perfection by sticking them in the microwave for 90 seconds.

Irish regulator launches 2 investigations into TikTok for handling of children’s personal data and transfers to China

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has opened two investigations into TikTok, focusing on the platform’s handling of children’s personal data, and the transfer of information to China, where TikTok’s parent company is based.

The inquiries were announced by the Data Protection Commission (DPC) on Tuesday, with the first to investigate whether TikTok complies with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and separate Irish law regarding “platform settings for users under age 18 and age verification measures for persons under 13.”

The second inquiry will examine “transfers by Tiktok of personal data to China.” No further information was given by the DPC.

Violent assaults against defenceless victims caught on smartphones and shared online for amusement are no new thing, so why has TikTok not managed to come to terms with preventing these unacceptable and grossly offensive videos?

In this age of quantum leaps in technology and seemingly endless possibilities about what we can do with our smartphones nothing is really that novel. So, while disturbing, it’s not surprising to see a new craze of violent assault videos being recklessly shared among TikTok’s one billion users.

While they might attempt to shift the blame, we must hold TikTok to account. When a video of a sucide went viral, the sharing service blamed a coordinated attack from the ‘dark web’ for spreading the traumatising clip. When accused of spreading content that glamorised eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia, it issued an anodyne statement claiming the safety of its users was its top priority. And when it was found to be used by Islamic State terrorists to share propaganda, the PR department announced, “Content promoting terrorist organisations has absolutely no place on TikTok.”

TikTok makes all the right noises when it’s called out on these issues but it needs to do more in preventing them from happening in the first place. It’s no use taking a video down once it’s been viewed several million times. The damage is done. User data has already been gathered and, of course, the money already made.

If Bytedance is to be allowed to operate within a nation’s borders making billions in the process with just a hint of taxes extracted, then it needs to be more accountable, not just in financial terms but in the realm of social responsibility.

We can’t have massive, foreign-owned corporations disseminating ultraviolent videos among our youngsters, accountable to no one but themselves and left to police their own behaviour. It’s just a bonkers idea to even think that is acceptable.

So let’s crack down on TikTok. Let’s hammer them with hefty fines for every video that promotes assault, terrorism, pornography, eating disorders and even suicide and keep hammering them until they receive the message and take preventative steps.

Additional suspects arrested in Covington High Tik-Tok teacher attack

COVINGTON, La. (WVUE) - Following the arrest of a Covington High School student for attacking a teacher after an apparent Tik-Tok challenge gone wrong, police have announced the arrest of additional suspects.

Trinity Gervais, 18, and a juvenile suspect turned themselves into the Covington Police Department after they were identified by detectives conducting an investigation.

The juvenile suspect was released on a custodial agreement and Gervais was issued a misdemeanor summons. Both suspects were charged with violation of L.R.S. 14:107.4, Unlawful Posting Of Criminal Activity For Notoriety and Publicity (Misdemeanor).

A school spokesperson said that all involved may face additional disciplinary actions from officials.

A wheelchair-bound 64-year-old teacher was injured in an attack after the bell rang, and the superintendent says he is appalled.

TikTok video moderator sues over ‘mental’ damage


A content moderator for TikTok is suing the company, alleging that it failed to protect her mental health while she was forced to watch graphic videos including suicide, murder and cannibalism.



Candie Frazier – who allegedly worked 12 hours a day monitoring TikTok videos for the contracting company Telus International – filed a lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance claiming she now “has trouble sleeping” and that “when she does sleep, she has horrific nightmares” due to the disturbing videos.

According to Bloomberg, the videos Frazier was exposed to at work include clips of “freakish cannibalism, crushed heads, school shootings, suicides, and even a fatal fall from a building, complete with audio.”

“Due to the sheer volume of content, content moderators are permitted no more than 25 seconds per video, and simultaneously view three to ten videos at the same time,” the lawsuit alleged, claiming moderators were only allowed to escape the content with two 15-minute breaks and an hour for lunch.

TikTok star dead at 28 after lover allegedly strangled him over video game

TikTok influencer Rory Teasley has died at 28 after his boyfriend of 10 years allegedly strangled him during a fight over a video game, according to Michigan’s Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers went to an apartment in Pontiac, a northern suburb of metro Detroit, Thursday night after Docquen Jovo Watkins called 911 to report that he and Teasley had an altercation, local news outlet Click On Detroit reported. Watkins, 31, told cops that he and his boyfriend had gotten into a fight and that his Teasley was now “sleeping” on the couch.
