Sanders, AOC, Buttigieg among top 10 Democratic 2024 hopefuls: report

By Mark Moore
July 17, 2022

Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared for the first time on a Washington Post ranking of potential Democratic presidential hopefuls — that also showed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg pulling ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris in the No. 2 slot behind President Biden.

Progressive lightning rod Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remained at No. 10 in the newspaper’s survey of possible contenders in the 2024 election, as California Gov. Gavin Newsom jumped two spots to No. 7 right behind Sanders, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer debuted on the list at No. 8.

Biden wasn’t included in the rankings compiled in December 2021 because of speculation at the time that he would be a one-term president and because polls showed that Democratic-leaning voters narrowly preferred “someone not named Biden on the ballot in 2024.”

Buttigieg: ‘Astonished’ that Americans Can’t ‘Let Go of the Status Quo’ in Green Energy Transition

TRENT BAKER 20 Jul 2022

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Wednesday said he was “still astonished” that some people “seem to really struggle to let go of the status quo” when it comes to the push for greener energy.

Buttigieg, who the day before touted that high gas prices were forcing Americans towards electric vehicles, acknowledged in a CNBC “Squawk Box” interview that there were “challenges” to transitioning to cleaner energy but emphasized it was important to make the transition.

Pete Buttigieg beats Joe Biden in New Hampshire 2024 poll

By Steven Nelson
July 26, 2022

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg narrowly beat President Biden in a new 2024 presidential preference poll of New Hampshire Democrats — a bad sign for Biden if he plans to run for a second term.

Buttigieg, 40, had the support of 17% of likely Democratic primary voters in the University of New Hampshire survey released Tuesday — versus Biden’s 16%.

The poll found that 74% of Democrats in the early-primary state said they don’t want Biden to run again as inflation hits four-decade highs.

Biden says he plans to seek a second term despite turning 80 in November, but had just 16% support among New Hampshire Democrats, followed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), each at 10%.

CNBC’s Joe Kernen challenges Buttigieg on inflation: ‘Wouldn’t it be better to just be honest?’

By Thomas Barrabi
September 16, 2022

CNBC anchor Joe Kernen took Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to task on Friday for the Biden administration holding a celebration on the same day that a worse-than-expected August inflation report caused stocks to tank.

President Biden held a party on the White House’s South Lawn on Tuesday to celebrate passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. The event occurred even as the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 1,300 points in response to federal data showing prices jumped 8.3% in August.

Kernen initially asked Buttigieg whether he felt it was a “mistake” for the White House to hold the celebration — but he turned more aggressive when the Biden cabinet member argued the party was warranted because of the Democrat-backed legislation’s long-term benefits.

“On that day it looked really tone-deaf. What you’re telling me is, just stick to the script,” Kernen said.

“’The economy is great, the border is secure, our cities are safe.’ Wouldn’t it be better to just be honest? Wouldn’t it be better to just be honest with the American people about the soup that we’re in right now and we can all try to deal with it together?” Kernen added.

Buttigieg: ‘I Don’t Want to Hear Thoughts and Prayers’ from Those Demonizing LGBTQ Community

PAM KEY 22 Nov 2022

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Tuesday on “CBS Mornings” that he did not want thoughts and prayers from those who demonize the LGBTQ community after the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs that left five people dead and 25 injured.

Co-host Tony Dokoupil said, “Buttigieg is the highest-ranking openly gay man in the Biden administration, and he told us he believes that political rhetoric is providing fuel for violence.”

US officials pressured Canada to stop ‘Freedom Convoy,’ new testimony reveals

By Victor Nava
November 24, 2022

Top Biden administration officials pressed their Canadian counterparts to clear truckers blockading parts of the United States’s northern border during protests in January.

A public inquiry into the Canadian government’s decision to use emergency powers to clear the “Freedom Convoy” protesters revealed on Thursday that frantic phone calls were placed by Washington to Ottawa in an effort to open up choked-off supply lines.

“They are very, very, very worried,” Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland wrote in an email to her staff after a Feb. 10 phone call from White House National Economic Council Director Brian Deese, according to Politico.

“If this is not sorted out in the next 12 hours, all of their northeastern car plants will shut down,” Freeland continued in her email.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg phoned his Canadian counterpart, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, the same day Deese called Freeland, according to the report, and Buttigieg pressed Alghabra about Canada’s “plan to resolve” the protests.

Alghabra told the commission that Buttigieg initiated the call and that the interaction was “unusual.”

Chasten Buttigieg: GOP Created ‘Dangerous Atmosphere for LGBTQ People with Their Language’

PAM KEY 25 Nov 2022

Husband of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and author Chasten Buttigieg said Friday on “CNN This Morning” that Republicans have “created a very dangerous atmosphere for LGBTQ people with their language.”

Co-host Don Lemon said, “Can we talk about the rhetoric surrounding it because listen, especially lately, a lot of people have been using gay people, not just lately, but it ramped up during the midterms, using gay people as political pawns in their messaging and their ads and things they’re trying to get accomplished and trying to roll back certain issues. How do you respond?”

Buttigieg said, “Certainly, it’s uncomfortable watching them try to have it both ways. They spent the entire midterms, and for many of them, they spent their entire time here in Washington attacking the LGBTQ community, attaching awful, terrible labels to any LGBTQ person, attacking trans people specifically, and then something like Club Q happens, and they want to send us their thoughts and prayers.

Radical-Left Nina Turner Slams Secretary Pete Buttigieg for Supply Chain, Transportation Failures

WENDELL HUSEBØ 28 Dec 2022

Radical-left activist and former politician Nina Turner slammed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Tuesday for the nation’s supply chain and transportation woes.

Citing an averted railroad strike, airline delays, and supply chain failures, Turner said the crises are a result of “a small city mayor being made the Secretary of Transportation.”

Biden nominated Buttigieg for transportation secretary in 2021. He was mayor of South Bend, Indiana, from 2012-2020. He has since become one of the most powerful men in Washington, DC, after Congress passed a $1 trillion transportation bill into law in November 2021. The bill enables Buttigieg with the tremendous power of directing these funds throughout the nation.

“What’s happening with the railroads, airlines & the supply chain is a result of a small city mayor being made the Secretary of Transportation as a means to pad his resume for President,” she tweeted. “Secretary Buttigieg is a prime example of failing up.”

Pete Buttigieg took husband to Invictus Games on military plane: report

By Mark Moore
January 4, 2023

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg took his husband, Chasten, along for the ride on a military aircraft when he attended the Invictus Games in Europe last year, according to a report on Wednesday.

Buttigieg traveled from Joint Base Andrews outside DC to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on a “MilAir Flight” on April 15, 2021, Fox News Digital reported, citing a calendar obtained by Americans for the Public Trust. He returned two days later.

President Biden announced April 13 that Buttigieg would lead a US delegation to the Invictus Games, which were founded in 2014 by Prince Harry and are held for wounded, injured and sick service members.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Deputy Veterans Affairs Secretary Donald Remy, and Air Force Undersecretary Gina Ortiz Jones were also among the official delegation — but not Chasten Buttigieg.
(...)
Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, also attended the games in The Hague.

Buttigieg, who served in Afghanistan, and his husband were pictured at the event — with the couple even sitting with the Sussexes and the rest of the US delegation for an official photograph, despite Chasten not being a formal participant.

“Secretary Buttigieg’s travel woes keep piling up with this newest revelation that he and his husband took a private jet for a European trip,” Caitlin Sutherland, executive director of Americans for the Public Trust, told Fox News Digital. “Taxpayers, who just had their holiday plans completely upended because of Buttigieg’s travel mismanagement, should be furious.”

Biden, Buttigieg face pressure to get to the bottom of FAA mishap

BY ALEX GANGITANO - 01/11/23 5:21 PM ET

President Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are under intense political pressure to get to the bottom of an issue at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that grounded flights Wednesday — and to prevent further snares in Americans’ air travel.

The FAA experienced an outage in the system that warns pilots of hazards during their upcoming flights, halting departures across the nation. While the system came back online a few hours later, the predicament came less than a month after Southwest Airlines canceled thousands of flights amid deadly winter storms, raising the focus on problems in commercial aviation.

Buttigieg said once flights resumed that he “directed an after-action process to determine root causes and recommend next steps.” Biden, meanwhile, told Buttigieg to report directly back to him when he learned the cause of the outage, and the administration has said that there has been no evidence of a cyberattack.

Republicans blasted the administration for the FAA meltdown.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee member Garret Graves (R-La.) said on Twitter that lawmakers will “aggressively pursue accountability.”

Democrats care more about Pete Buttigieg’s identity politics than if he can actually do his job

By Chadwick Moore
January 13, 2023

Almost a year ago, the Federal Aviation Authority, under the helm of transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, announced that the aviation briefing known as NOTAM, or Notice to Airmen, would undergo a name change. NOTAMs are unclassified notices distributed from an aviation authority to all pilots that contain essential information regarding conditions, hazards, system concerns, or other flight operations. NOTAM, Mayor Pete’s Department of Transportation declared, wasn’t gender inclusive and, as of Dec. 2, 2021, it should henceforth be referred to Notice to Air Missions, not Airmen.

While Mayor Pete preoccupied his department with scrubbing the bigotry out of an acronym, it never occurred to the Biden administration’s Chief Diversity Hire that the system itself might need some tending-to. That was until this week when an outage caused the NOTAM system to fail and all flights in the US were grounded for several hours, something that hasn’t happened since 9/11.

The FAA system failure came just weeks after Southwest Airlines ruined Christmas when its outdated computer system led to thousands of canceled flights — something that the transportation secretary brazenly mocked, seemingly unaware that the Biden administration had given billions of dollars in handouts to Southwest, with no oversight. As he wagged his finger at the airline, Mayor Pete was oblivious that his own computers might need a tune-up.

But bothersome tasks like keeping the planes flying, or the cargo ships moving, or the railroads secure, aren’t very sexy for Mayor Pete — who famously went on “paternity leave” in the middle of a supply chain crisis. Being blindsided by catastrophe seems less like a bad day at the office for Privilege Pete and more like a lifestyle choice.

Like the rest of the Biden administration, or like the last emperors of Rome, Mayor Pete is supremely decadent as civilization collapses around him. We have genderqueer Energy Department officials moonlighting as luggage thieves, health czars dressing up as women and parading around in military uniforms they didn’t earn, and a vice president who seems to have completely given up on life.

Buttigieg, FAA pressed for details on airline safety after Chinese spy mission delays flights

Commercial flights were grounded over the weekend due to a Chinese surveillance balloon

By Kelly Laco | Fox News

EXCLUSIVE: A Republican lawmaker is demanding information on federal protocols in place for passenger safety and response after commercial flights were grounded over the weekend due to a Chinese surveillance balloon carrying sensors and surveillance equipment.

Rep. Thomas Kean, R-N.J., who sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Aviation Subcommittee, wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Federal Aviation Authority Acting Administrator Billy Nolan to ask about the FAA's issuance of a ground stop on Feb. 4 for the Wilmington, Myrtle Beach and Charleston airports while the Chinese surveillance balloon moved across the nation.

"I understand the ground stop issuance was in support of a Department of Defense (DOD) national security effort in response to the breach of U.S. airspace," wrote Kean. "Over the past several years, Chinese surveillance activity of this nature has been observed, while the path of the surveillance devices have carried over a number of sensitive national security sites."

"Make no mistake, the first priority of the U.S. should be to protect against all foreign threats, and that includes stopping foreign intelligence collection of sensitive information," he wrote. "Nevertheless, when faced with these challenges, the FAA should have proper protocol in place to reduce the impact on commercial aviation and passengers.

Democrat blasts Buttigieg: Dept of Transportation 'needs a more effective policeman' to 'get the job done'

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., was critical at a hearing on Southwest Airlines holiday disruptions

By Alexander Hall | Fox News

Senators from both sides of the aisle scorched Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for his job performance.

Lawmakers skewered Buttigieg in Thursday’s Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee hearing, "Strengthening Airline Operations and Consumer Protections." The hearing discussed the technological meltdown of Southwest Airlines that stranded many Americans amid the holiday season.

Ranking member Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas slammed Buttigieg for not being there, "Notably absent from today’s meeting is Secretary Buttigieg."

Cruz said, "The DOT didn’t give any mea culpa to impacted travelers. The Biden DOT didn’t issue refunds, didn’t issue reimbursements, it just screwed up their flights and then proceeded to say, ‘We want to be in charge of how the airlines behave."

Pete Buttigieg makes cringey spy balloon joke, stays silent on Ohio train derailment

By Victor Nava
February 13, 2023

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg copped bipartisan heat Monday when he failed to address the catastrophic Ohio train derailment which released toxic chemicals into the air this month — but joked about Chinese spy balloons and moaned about a lack of diversity in the construction industry.

“It couldn’t be a more exciting time for transportation,” Buttigieg, 41, said in a remarks at the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference in Washington, DC, where he discussed the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill signed by President Biden in 2021.

“It’s had its challenges. I mean, if you look at what the American transportation systems have faced in the last two or three years partly because of the pandemic, we’ve faced issues from container shipping to airline cancellations … Now we got balloons,” the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, awkwardly joked.

But the one-time presidential candidate’s cringey attempt at humor went down like a lead balloon.
