First public Holocaust education center to open in Romania
Elie Wiesel: “I am honored and deeply moved that my cherished home in Sighet has become a place Romanians and others can learn about the crimes of the Holocaust, and how the Jewish community was wiped out.” BUCHAREST -- The first public Holocaust education center in Romania will open Sunday during a special event in the north western town of Sighet in the pre-war home of Nobel Prize-winning author Elie Wiesel. The “Holocaust Cellar” will become a new feature of the Holocaust museum in the courtyard of the old Jewish Ghetto of Sighet and will serve as a learning center dedicated to the 13,000 local Holocaust victims. The opening is sponsored jointly by the Romanin government, the city of Sighet, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the Romanian Jewish Federation and Limmud FSU. This is the first in a series of events that will mark 70 years since the expulsion of the last Jews of northern Transylvania to Auschwitz. Among the events will be a concert memorializing Holocaust victims on Saturday night May 17, after Shabbat. “I am honored and deeply moved that my cherished home in Sighet has become a place Romanians and others can learn about the crimes of the Holocaust, and how the Jewish community was wiped out,” said Professor Elie Wiesel. “The opening of the Holocaust Cellar supports my life’s efforts to ensure that humanity never forgets the evil that took place there and throughout Europe.” In 1944, two days after Passover, the Jews of Maramures County, in northern Transylvania, were rounded up and forced into 13 ghettos. Eventually, 131,639 Jews from Marmures County were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, and most were exterminated. Between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews were murdered or died during the Holocaust in Romania and the territories under its control. An additional 135,000 Romanian Jews living under Hungarian control in Northern Transylvania also perished in the Holocaust, as did some 5,000 Romanian Jews in other countries. “The story of the Jews who lived in North Transylvania has not been widely told until now, and we’re proud to help begin this next chapter,” said Chaim Chesler, chairman of the Memory Committee of the Claims Conference. “The education center commemorates the terrible fate that befell the Jews of this area, and ensures their story will not be forgotten. http://ejpress.org/index.php?option=...48956&catid=11 |

The Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta, has conceded victory in the country's presidential run-off to an ethnic German mayor, Klaus Iohannis.
"I called Mr Iohannis and I congratulated him," Mr Ponta, a Social Democrat, told reporters. Early official results are expected on Monday. Exit polls had suggested a tight race. Romania is one of the most corrupt EU states, something which centre-right Mr Iohannis has vowed to tackle. Despite the election result, Mr Ponta told a local television channel that he had "no reason to resign" as prime minister. He had hoped to become the country's youngest president, replacing the incumbent Traian Basescu who cannot stand for re-election after serving two terms. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-30076716 |

‘Life in Romania Worse Than During Ceausescu’, Poll Shows
Citizens aged over 50 the most disappointed (ANSA) — TRIESTE — According to the opinion poll published in the Inscop research centre in Romania, more than 40% of Romanians thinks that the situation in the country is worse today than during the communist regime lead by Nicolae Ceausescu. According to this poll, only 33% of the questioned thinks that the current situation is better than in 1989, while 17% finds that things have remained the same. The Inscop analysts explained that such results are not a sign of a nostalgic wave towards the communist regime, but more a reaction to the negative circumstances — in terms of possibility of finding a permanent job, or poor health and education system — considered worse than before 1989. The most disappointed are Romanians over 50 years old. Namely, 45,8% of the questioned in this age group retains that living conditions in Romania today are worse than 25 years ago. The poll has been commissioned by the Adevarul daily. http://www.ansa.it/nuova_europa/en/n...2b19a9273.html |

Romania struggles to confront Holocaust past
Bucharest - More than 70 years after the Holocaust, the suffering of survivors in Romania is often overlooked or played down, even if the country has taken some steps towards recognising what happened, historians and survivors say. After denying its role in the Holocaust for years, in 2003 Romania set up an international commission of historians led by survivor and Nobel peace laureate Elie Wiesel to look into the matter. http://news.yahoo.com/romania-strugg...225120764.html |

Israeli billionaire Beny Steinmetz is among group of four Israeli businessmen who attempted to take over state-owned lands
Romania seeks arrest of Israeli billionaire over corruption scandal
Israeli billionaire Beny Steinmetz is among group of four Israeli businessmen accused of involvement in real estate corruption scandal in Romania • Four attempted to take over state-owned lands in Bucharest through fraud and bribery, reports local media. Romanian authorities have accused Steinmetz, businessman and political consultant Tal Silberstein, Moshe Agavi and former Prime Minister's Office Director Shimon Sheves of conducting illicit real estate deals that cost the state some $150 million. The four, along with Romanian businessman Remus Truica and Paul-Philippe Hohenzollern, also known as Prince Paul of Romania, allegedly attempted to take over state-owned lands near Bucharest by way of fraud and bribery. Remus Truica was arrested on Wednesday after being questioned at the directorate's local headquarters in Brasov. The prosecution is charging him with setting up and running an organized crime group. The four have denied involvement in any illegal action attributed to Truica. http://www.israelhayom.com/site/news...e.php?id=32363

Romania: Holocaust institute opposes journalist on TV board
BUCHAREST, Romania — Romania's Holocaust institute has protested the appointment of a well-known journalist to the board of the country's public television station, saying it is disrespectful to the victims of the Holocaust. The Elie Wiesel Institute for the Study of the Holocaust said Wednesday that Oana Stanciulescu is unsuitable for the position due to her criticism of a recent law that punishes Holocaust denial or the promotion of the fascist Legionnaires' Movement with prison sentences of up to three years. Her place on the 13-member board, approved by Parliament Tuesday, has generated strong reactions. The party that represents the interests of ethnic Hungarians walked out of Parliament, and the head of the Jewish community, Aurel Vainer, also protested. Stanciulescu's supporters respect her anti-communist views and support for the victims of communism. http://www.startribune.com/romania-h...ard/373199751/ |

Romania to speed up Holocaust-era property restitution
BUCHAREST, April 26 - Romania is to fast-track claims from Holocaust survivors under an amended law on property restitution which are expected to be passed by parliament next week, legislators said on Tuesday. Romania was an ally of Nazi Germany during World War Two until it changed sides in August 1944, and much of the property seized during the war was later nationalised under communist rule which followed. http://news.trust.org/item/20160426153338-2etys |

Romanian Parliament Approves Expediting Holocaust Claims
Some 40,000 claims were filed before 2003 deadline but have yet to be processed. The Romanian parliament on Tuesday passed legislation to expedite property claims that Holocaust victims and the Romanian Jewish community file, The World Jewish Restitution Organization announced. The restitution organization also noted that the legislation enjoyed support across the political spectrum. According to the NGO, it had negotiated with the Romanian government over the past year to speed up the processing of over 40,000 claims filed before a 2003 deadline that have been languishing in bureaucracy. "This law acknowledges the urgent needs of Romanian Holocaust survivors, who have waited too long to have their property claims resolved,” said Gideon Taylor, the chairman of operations for the World Jewish Restitution Organization. “It also ensures that all pre-Holocaust Jewish organizations are recognized as integral parts of the vibrant pre-War Jewish life in Romania and that property that once belonged to them is returned to the Jewish community. We look forward to working with the Romanian government to ensure swift implementation of this legislation.” “In the past three months, Romania, Serbia, and Latvia have each passed important restitution laws,” added Taylor. “There is momentum building as countries recognize the urgency of providing restitution during the lifetime of survivors. We encourage other countries to act now.” The NGO noted that the new law resolves other issues regarding Jewish property claims. They include some 55 Jewish communal properties, like schools and burial societies, the had been taken away from the pre-Holocaust community, as well as some 40 properties that the Communist regime ruling Romania had forced the community to "donate." http://www.haaretz.com/jewish/news/1.719039 |
