Pahor wins Slovenian presidential run-off

English.news.cn 2012-12-03 05:40:56

By Xinhua writer Zhao Yi

LJUBLJANA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua)-- Former Slovenian prime minister Borut Pahor, who won a landslide victory in the 2012 presidential election run-off on Sunday, called for joint effort to help Slovenia bridge over difficulties and crisis.

This is "only the beginning, the beginning of something new, a new hope, a new period, " he told reporters soon after he was unofficially announced winner of the presidential run-off.

"We need trust, mutual respect, tolerance, readiness to listen. And irrespective of how big the differences among us may be, the things that connect us are even stronger."

Pahor won 67 percent of votes, while incumbent President Danilo Turk, who seeks second term, got 33 percent, unofficial and incomplete results showed.

While Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa congratulated his predecessor Pahor on winning the presidential run-off, incumbent Presdient Danilo Turk, who sought for the second term in office, has conceded defeat in the runoff, and congratulated Pahor, Slovenian Press Agency reported.

The outgoing president said he would remain an "active citizen" after his term officially ends in three weeks.

The latest presidential elections in Slovenia, the fifth of its kind since the former republic of Yugoslavia declared independence in 1991, kicked off three weeks ago.

The run-off election took place as there was no candidate winning an outright majority in the first round.

Slovenia's president, with a five-year term, is largely a ceremonial post. However, as head of state, he is custodian of the national constitution and the supreme commander of the country's armed forces.

Pahor, 49, was prime minister between November 2008 and February 2012. His cabinet failed in September 2011 to pass confidence vote in the National Assembly due to its failure to deal with worsening political and economic crisis.

Pahor's setbacks prompted a snap parliamentary vote last December. He was succeeded by Jansa in February 2012.

During his latest presidential campaign, Pahor promised to do his best to restore confidence among politicians and people, and to seek political consensus to tackle the crisis in Slovenia.

On foreign affairs, he advocated to give first priority to the maintenance of good relations with all of its neighboring countries, because the most trade is done with these countries and most investment comes from them.

He suggested Slovenia play more political influence in the Western Balkans, strengthen strategic partnerships with EU countries, and enhance its political and economic cooperation with main global powers.

He also stood for Slovenia's involvement in international peacekeeping missions organized by international organizations, especially the NATO.

Pahor's bid for the presidency of Slovenia has been supported by Jansa and Parliament Speaker Gregor Virant.

Slovenia needs a new president who should be more unifying, Jansa told reporters as he cast his vote in the run-off of presidential election.

Virant voiced his support for Pahor publicly, noting that cooperation between state president and parliamentary speaker was very important.

Slovenia, with two million people, prepared some 3,300 polling stations for 1.7 million eligible voters across the country to cast votes.

However, the turnout of Sunday's elections was reportedly 31 percent, which was the lowest on record.

Such a low turnout could be attributed partially to poor weather, with snow and rain sweeping across the country.

But anti-government demonstrations and protests that turned bloody violent in the past few days have apparently remarkable negative impact on enthusiasm about the presidential election, local analysts said.

More than a dozen of police officers injured and about 60 protesters were detained when 10,000-strong protests against social unfairness and official corruption broke out in Ljubljana and Maribor, the second largest city in the country, last week.

The successive anti-government demonstrations were believed to be the worst social turmoil ever since the founding of the Republic of Slovenia in 1991.

In December 2013th The representatives of Slovenian NS organization "Slovenian Radicals" visited the Blood & Honour activists in the Republic of Srpska. This is the second coming of the Slovenian comrades to the Republic of Serbian. This group of Serbian Slovenian friendship ended in socializing, friendly discussion, exchange of experiences and agreement.

Slovenia says yes to gay marriage and same sex adoption

Slovenia has become the 11th country in the European Union to allow marriage between same sex couples, who are also now legally allowed to adopt children, just three years after a similar law was rejected in a referendum.

The Slovenian parliament passed the law by a comfortable 51 to 28 votes, although the law was fiercely protested by two center right opposition parties and various interest groups.

“This will be a step towards a truly patient and inclusive society which Slovenia enters the twenty-first century,”Matej Tasner Vatovec of the center-left party United Left, which tabled the law, told parliament before the vote.

One of the groups, which opposed the law, the Civil Initiative for Family and Children’s Rights, said Wednesday that it would try and push for a referendum to oppose the law. Slovenia rejected a similar proposal in a referendum in 2012.

But this is unlikely to succeed, because Slovenia changed the law in 2013, which prohibits referendums on issues of human rights.so much for democracy and will of the people

Slovenia’s neighbor Croatia, and another country of the former Yugoslavia, rejected gay marriage and adoption in a referendum in 2013, although couples can register their partnerships.

A number of European Union countries including Britain, Spain and France have recently recognized same sex marriages, although they remain a divisive issue within the more conservative members of the EU.

There are now 21 countries worldwide, which allow same sex marriages.

Tiny Slovenia Prepares for an Influx of Refugees

Quote:
In just a matter of days, the small former Yugoslav republic of Slovenia has been propelled into the center of Europe's refugee crisis.

The closure of Hungary's southern border with Serbia on Tuesday has forced thousands of refugees to consider new routes to their desired destinations, such as Germany and other northern European countries.

Many have moved eastwards to Croatia, with more than 7,300 refugees entering the country since Wednesday. Most refugees are expected to keep moving northwards and seek to cross Croatia's 415-mile

border with Slovenia, with the Slovenian Red Cross saying on Thursday that it expects 5,000 refugees to enter the country in the coming days.

Slovenia is taking steps to prepare for an influx. On Wednesday, the Central European state informed the European Commission that it was reintroducing border controls along its eastern border with Hungary for 10 days.

Slovenian Police Commissioner Marjan Fank also said that presence of police at the Croatian border would likely be increased to deal with the expected increase in refugees attempting to cross.

The Slovenian border with Croatia forms part of the external border of Europe's Schengen area—a 26 country bloc wherein European citizens can move freely without need for passports.

Migrants arrive in Slovenia after Hungary closes border with Croatia

Quote:
PETISOVCI, Slovenia -- Hungary shut down its border with Croatia to the free flow of migrants on Saturday, adding another hurdle in their frantic flight from wars and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia

toward what they hope is a better life in Western Europe.

The closure prompted Croatia to redirect thousands of people -- including women and small children soaked in cold rain -- further west toward its border with Slovenia, the small European Union-member state which

has no capacity to process large numbers wishing to head toward Austria and Germany. This could leave thousands stranded in Croatia and further east and south in Serbia and Macedonia.

Several buses packed with migrants arrived in the Slovenian border town of Petisovci early Saturday from Croatia. Police spokeswoman Suzana Raus said that after processing, most of them will be transferred toward

the Austrian border.

We are protecting the freedoms of European citizens': Hungary defends closing its Croatian border as several busloads of migrants reaches Slovenia

Hungary closed border with Croatia last night, forcing migrants to Slovenia

First bus has arrived on Slovenian border where migrants will be registered

Slovenia has cancelled all trains from Croatia to stem the tide of migrants

383,000 migrants from Middle East, Africa, Asia entered Hungary this year

More on Europe's migrant crisis: Migrant and Refugee Crisis News from Syria and Europe | Daily Mail Online

Hundreds of migrants trapped in Croatia have reached the Slovenian border after Hungary shut its border with the country last night.

Buses carrying more than 600 have already arrived at the border crossings of Gruskovje and Petisovci, Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said.

Hungary, which also built a 110-mile-long barb wire fence along its border with Serbia, said it closed the crossing to 'protect the freedoms' of European citizens.

The blockade at the Hungary-Croatia border forced thousands of migrants to divert to Slovenia, home to two million people, where the new arrivals will be registered before 'most of them' are transferred to the Austrian border.

Slovenia cancelled all trains from Croatia so migrants could not enter the country that way. Experts fear the move will leave thousands of migrants stranded in Croatia, which is 'ill-equipped' to deal with them.

March of the migrants now 'out of control' as Croatia sends thousands more towards overwhelmed Slovenia, who are left to beg the EU for help policing its borders

Slovenia blasts Croatia for ignoring requests to contain the migrant surge and called on rest of EU to solve crisis

It says it can only handle 2,500 migrants a day – but claims 8,300 refugees are already being held in the country

Police surrounded hundreds more migrants in a muddy field near the border before escorting them to packed centre

Slovenia is pleading with the EU to send more police to patrol its borders as thousands more migrants enter the country on their way to western Europe.

The country's president Borut Pahor said he needed 'fast assistance' from the EU as it emerged that about 19,500 migrants have entered Slovenia since Friday.

It comes as Slovenia accused Croatia of sending thousands of refugees toward its borders 'without control' after ignoring requests to contain the surge.

Slovenian MPs Pass Ten Percent Minimum Wage Rise

Slovenia's parliament on Thursday approved a phased ten percent increase in the minimum wage, as the eurozone country's economy continues to rebound from a 2013 crisis with its fifth year of growth.

There has been upward pressure on wages across Europe in recent months, with inflation in the eurozone due to hit 1.8 percent in 2018, according to a forecast released by the European Central Bank on Thursday.

In a concession to the "yellow jackets" protests that have rocked France, on Monday French President Emmanuel Macron announced a 100-euro ($113) per month increase in the minimum wage there from next year.

On Wednesday the Socialist government in Spain announced a 22 percent hike in the minimum wage as of 2019, calling it the biggest rise in over four decades.

EU leaders must pay attention to threatened civic freedoms in Slovenia

Updated: 17/01/2022
By Aarti Narsee

"Janša is not the voice of Slovenians."

This is the message being conveyed by Slovenians during the Friday anti-government protests they have staged weekly since Prime Minister Janez Janša came to power in March 2020: his third term in office.

Janša was once branded a national hero, having played an important role in leading his country to the path to independence: an independence formally recognised by the European Union 30 years ago, on January 15, 1992.

Today, however, many Slovenians say Janša must go. He and his far-right Slovenian Democratic (SDS) Party have repeatedly targeted the very civic freedoms he once defended. In June 2021, Slovenia was placed on the CIVICUS Monitor Watchlist, which issues alerts on countries where there has been a recent and rapid deterioration in civic freedoms.

EU slams Slovenian prime minister for antisemitic conspiracy tweet

Janez Jansa accused several members of European Parliament delegation on press freedom of being ‘puppets’ of Jewish billionaire George Soros

By SAMUEL PETREQUIN
15 October 2021, 6:46 pm

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — The European Union reiterated Friday that antisemitism “has no place” in the 27-nation bloc after Slovenian Prime minister Janez Jansa posted a message on social media that was criticized by some European lawmakers as antisemitic.

Jansa, whose country currently holds the rotating EU Council presidency, accused several members of the European Parliament of being “puppets” of George Soros. The Hungarian-American billionaire investor, who is Jewish, has been the subject of antisemitic attacks and conspiracy theories for decades.

Jansa made his comments on Twitter during a visit to Slovenia by a European Parliament delegation assessing press freedom and the rule of law in the Balkan state.

Same-sex marriage in Slovenia has been legal since 8 July 2022 in accordance with a ruling from the Constitutional Court of Slovenia. The court ruled that the ban on same-sex marriages violated the Constitution of Slovenia and gave the Slovenian Parliament six months to bring legislation in line, although the ruling took effect immediately.[1][2] Slovenia was the first country of former Yugoslavia to legalise same-sex marriage, the first of the former Eastern Bloc (excluding East Germany), the 18th in Europe, and the 31st worldwide. Previously, a bill to legalize same-sex marriage had been approved by Parliament on 3 March 2015; however, it was rejected in a referendum on 20 December 2015.
