"Bail out, you fool!"
Ranger 9 55 years ago, on, March 24, 1965, the unmanned Ranger 9 lunar probe, last in the series, impacted the Moon's crater Alphonsus at a velocity of 8,800 feet per second. Prior to this in the last 17 minutes of flight, the spacecraft's TV cameras took nearly 6,000 high-resolution photographs of the Moon's surface in preparation for the upcoming Apollo manned lunar landing flights. Upon showing the footage to NASA's astronauts, Wally Schirra is purported to have jokingly exclaimed, "Bail out, you fool!" https://moon.nasa.gov/resources/289/...-impacts-moon/ http://www.astronautix.com/r/ranger6-7-8-9.html
