Gov’t to draft national action plan against antisemitism

07.10.2022

The government will soon draft the country’s first comprehensive national action plan against antisemitism, deputy prime minister Panagiotis Pikramenos told an international conference in Ioannina on Friday.

Addressing the opening of a two-day conference on “Fighting Antisemitism and Holocaust Distortion and Denial on the Digital Battlefield,” Pikramenos noted that the process to create the action plan will start in the coming weeks.

Relevant ministries, public bodies and the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece will participate in the process.

In a pre-recorded message, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias noted that “a torrent of fake news, hate speech and conspiracy theories is spreading through the internet and social media.”

It was “our duty to stop this new ‘pandemic’ as soon as possible.”

Among those attending the conference are Ioannina Mayor Moses Elisaf, Israeli Ambassador to Greece Noam Katz and President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece David Saltiel.

At least 18 migrants dead in shipwreck off Greece's Lesbos

Reuters

ATHENS, Oct 6 (Reuters) - At least 18 people, most of them women, died when their vessel sank off the Greek island of Lesbos early on Thursday, the country's coastguard said, in the second maritime disaster involving migrants in the Aegean Sea in under a day.

The boat was carrying about 40 people, authorities said, citing people who had been rescued so far. Eighteen bodies were recovered, including a man and a boy, and 25 other people were rescued. The search for survivors was continuing under adverse weather conditions, the coast guard said.

They should have stayed in their own countries.

Greece proposes power link to Austria, Germany - minister

Reuters

ATHENS, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Greece has proposed building a cable that will carry electricity produced by renewables to Austria and southern Germany, its Energy Minister said on Thursday.

With abundant sun and wind, Athens has simplified permitting and supports hefty investment in power networks expansion to more than double the share of renewables to 70% of electricity consumption by 2030.

"We have already submitted a proposal to Austria, to my Austrian counterpart and my German counterpart to build a power interconnection to link Greece with Austria and further with southern Germany," Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas told a renewable energy conference in Athens.

Young Greeks priced out as inflation, rents soar

By George Georgiopoulos and Lefteris Papadimas

ATHENS, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Like many young Greeks trying to live within their means, Christina Pappas had to look for a cheaper flat in an Athens suburb after her rent went up and was relieved to find one through word of mouth.

At 200 euros ($197.20) per month, she got lucky.

While Greece's economy is growing at nearly twice the euro zone rate this year thanks to a robust rebound in tourism, young people are increasingly being priced out of the property market due to the energy crisis and inflation, soaring rents and a scarce supply of small flats.

Mayors From Across the World Gather in Greece to Combat Anti-Semitism

November 29, 2022

Mayors from across the world are gathering in Greece for a major conference on combating antisemitism that kicks off on Wednesday in Athens.

Among participants from 53 cities and 23 countries is the mayor of New York Eric Adams.

The 2022 Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism (MSAA), will be hosted by Kostas Bakoyannis, Mayor of Athens & Chair of 2022 MSAA and the City of Athens, the birthplace of democracy and Greece as the oldest European Jewish community. President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou will also participate in this historic event.

“Athens is the birthplace of democracy, and the significant rise of hate and antisemitism we are witnessing around the world is a threat to our cherished democratic values,” Mayor Bakoyannis said.

“That is why this event is so important and timely. We see an insidious spread of antisemitism, so there is a need to fight this scourge at the local level as well as to see how these trends are global, and learn best practices from each other towards combating them,” he added.

Antisemitism conference: Mayors have the best understanding

“Mayors and other local and regional decision-makers are the closest officials to the ground in towns and cities around the world,” said CEO of Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Sacha Roytman Dratwa.

“They have the best understanding of the challenges and the solutions to combat all forms of hate, including antisemitism. They are the ones charged with issues that take place on their streets and neighborhoods, so they are closest to the pulse of their communities.”

CAM is a global coalition engaging more than 600 partner organizations and nearly two million people from a diverse array of religious, political, and cultural backgrounds in the common mission of fighting the world’s oldest hatred.

The first Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism was held online last year. This week’s event will be the first in-person conference of its kind, the CAM said.

Violent Protests Break Out in Greece After Police Shoot Roma Teenager

December 6, 2022

Violent scuffles broke out in Thessaloniki, Greece on Monday after a Roma teenager was shot by police and left in critical condition.

The 16-year-old was shot in the head in the early hours of Monday morning after driving a truck away from a petrol station near the port city of Thessaloniki without paying.

Officers from a motorcycle patrol had pursued the teenager’s pickup truck after a gas station employee reported the unpaid bill of 20 euros. The Greek police department said the youth had tried to ram officers in pursuit on motorbikes in his attempt to evade arrest.

Greek economy shrinks in Q3 on higher imports, lower public spending

Reuters

ATHENS, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Greece's economy shrank in July-to-September compared with the second quarter, as declining net exports and public spending offset strong tourism, statistics service (ELSTAT) said on Wednesday.

Seasonally adjusted data showed gross domestic product dropped by 0.5% in the third quarter, from a downwardly revised 0.6% growth rate in the previous quarter.

"Greece's GDP growth lost momentum in the third quarter, underperforming consensus expectations due to a sizeable drag from net exports and lowered government spending," National Bank's senior economist Nikos Magginas told Reuters.

ATHENS, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Eva Kaili feels betrayed by European Parliament colleagues who decided to strip the Greek MEP of her role as vice president of the assembly on Tuesday after she was accused of accepting bribes from Qatar, her lawyer in Athens told Reuters.

The case, in which Kaili has denied any wrongdoing, is evolving into one of the biggest corruption scandals to hit the European Union.

Kaili, who is in Belgian police detention, was one of 14 vice presidents in the parliament. Belgian prosecutors have charged her and three Italians at the weekend with participating in a criminal organisation, money laundering and corruption.

Greeks protest over deadly train crash, station master jailed pending trial

By Alkis Konstantinidis, Stelios Misinas

ATHENS (Reuters) -A Greek railway employee was jailed on Sunday pending trial over a deadly train crash that killed at least 57 people, as Greeks seethed with anger over the worst rail disaster in living memory.

Protests continued to reverberate days after a head-on collision of a passenger train and a freight carrier on the Athens-Thessaloniki route late in the evening of Feb. 28.

Clashes erupted between police and demonstrators in Athens on Sunday, after thousands rallied to protest over the crash.

The 59-year-old Larissa station master faces multiple charges of disrupting transport and putting lives at risk.

Greece to hold national election on May 21 - PM

By Renee Maltezou and Karolina Tagaris

ATHENS, March 28 (Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called parliamentary elections for May 21, saying he wanted a clean slate to push through further reforms after four years at the helm.

Mitsotakis's New Democracy Party has held a comfortable lead over opposition leftist Syriza since it came to power in 2019, but a Feb. 28 rail disaster which killed 57 people has stirred public anger and seen that gap narrow.

Greece Moves to Ban Neo-Nazi Party From Polls

April 10, 2023

Greek lawmakers are set to vote on urgent legislation introduced by the government in Athens to ban neo-Nazi parties from competing in upcoming national elections in May. The move comes after an imprisoned neo-Nazi set up – from behind bars - a political party that is gaining popular support ahead of the polls.

Greek Justice Minister Makis Voridis submitted the legislation to parliament, billing it as unprecedented and part of the government’s drive to protect democracy in the birthplace of democracy.

With this bill, he said, it is the first time in history that Greek members of parliament are asking the entire bench of the Supreme Court to weigh the credentials of a party and its members to compete in elections.

The move comes just weeks after Greek lawmakers voted to ban Ilias Kasidiaris, a leading member of the now defunct Golden Dawn party, from competing in the May 21 polls.

This is amazing! Jehovah's Witnesses come to Greece and hand out their JW propaganda pamphlets. An Orthodox priest pasts by their stand. The result: TOTAL GREEK VICTORY! ☦️🇬🇷🦅

Past austerity haunts Greek election as voters struggle with living costs

By Angeliki Koutantou and Lefteris Papadimas

ATHENS, May 15 (Reuters) - Fourteen years after a debt crisis that saw Greece nearly crash out of the euro, single parent Niki Klaoudatou says she worries more about money now than she did during the worst years of the country's economic meltdown.

Ahead of an election on May 21, a cost-of-living crisis that is eroding earnings is foremost in voters' minds. For Klaoudatou it means voting for anyone but the incumbent conservative New Democracy or the opposition leftist Syriza.

Greeks head to polls, no party seen winning clear majority

By Renee Maltezou

ATHENS, May 19 (Reuters) - Greece heads for what is likely to be an inconclusive parliamentary election on Sunday, paving the way for wrangling between parties to forge a ruling coalition in a deeply divided political landscape.

Opinion polls show Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' conservative New Democracy ahead of Alexis Tsipras' left-wing Syriza party, which ruled Greece in 2015-2019 at the peak of its debt crisis.

A new voting system means an outright winner is unlikely unless the first party achieves more than about 46% of the vote, leaving the two main candidates in a scramble to find potential allies or - the more probable outcome - to lead the country into a second election in a month's time.

After the election, and if the forecasts are confirmed, the three leading parties - New Democracy, Syriza and the Socialist PASOK - will each receive, in turn, a three-day mandate to try to form a government.

New Democracy, with poll ratings at 32-37%, could in theory team up with PASOK, ranking third on 8-11%. The couple put their historic animosity aside and ruled Greece during the debt crisis. But Mitsotakis, 55, told Reuters in an interview this week that he prefers "a strong one-party government".

"Experience has taught us in Greece that one-party governments are much more stable than coalition governments," Mitsotakis said.

.
Of course, Greek elections are a joke since the authorities - at the behest of international jewry - will ban any nationalist party that threatens the (((status quo))). First it was Golden Dawn, now it's Hellenes.

Conservatives fall short of outright majority in Greek parliamentary election

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has signaled that a second vote is likely

The ruling conservative New Democracy party scored a landslide victory in the Greek parliamentary election on Sunday, but failed to win an outright majority, which is required to form a government.

With over 96% of votes counted, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ New Democracy (ND) is leading with 40.79%. The left-wing Syriza party is trailing behind with 20.06%. According to the newspaper Kathimerini, the country has not seen a 20-point victory margin in a parliamentary election since 1974.

Despite the impressive performance, ND failed to secure a majority in the 300-seat Hellenic Parliament, which means it cannot form a government on its own. Mitsotakis has signaled that he would seek a second election rather than search for a coalition partner. If announced, the second vote would likely take place in late June or early July, according to Greek media.

Greek vote shows public mellowing from crisis-era anger

By Michele Kambas and Renee Maltezou

ATHENS, May 22 (Reuters) - A resounding defeat of radical parties in Greece's election on Sunday has shown voters have mellowed after more than 15 years of fuming over austerity triggered by a crippling debt crisis.

The conservative New Democracy party romped to victory with 40.8% of the vote in Sunday's poll which sent opposition Syriza into a tailspin after taking 20.1% of the vote and tumbling more than 11 points since the last election in 2019.

A new electoral system means New Democracy fell just shy of an absolute majority, paving the way for coalition talks this week though a second vote in June is more likely.

But the outcome was still a surprise. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emerged stronger despite a wiretapping scandal, the COVID pandemic, a cost of living crisis and a deadly rail crash in February which triggered public outrage.
