Stockpile of 2,000-year-old gemstones found in Roman bathhouse drain

Feb 2, 2023

Archaeologists recently uncovered a stockpile of 2,000-year-old glittering gemstones clogging the drain of a Roman bathhouse near Hadrian’s Wall in Carlisle, England.

The 30 engraved, semi-precious stones — known as intaglios — likely dropped out of the ring settings worn by bathers who took to the waters sometime during the second and third centuries A.D., The Guardian reported.

“It’s incredible,” Frank Giecco, the archaeologist who led the excavation, told The Guardian. “It’s caught everyone’s imagination. They were just falling out of people’s rings who were using the baths. They were set with a vegetable glue and, in the hot and sweaty bathhouse, they fell out of the ring settings.”

Comb made from human skull may have been used in Iron Age rituals

1 March 2023

An ancient comb carved from a chunk of human skull has left researchers in London scratching their heads about whether or not it was actually used to style hair thousands of years ago.

Archaeologists first discovered the item at Bar Hill, a village in Cambridgeshire, England, during a three-year dig that ended in 2018. The artifact, which dates to the Iron Age (750 B.C. to A.D. 43) and measures approximately 2 inches (5 centimeters) long, contains nearly a dozen carved teeth and was part of the collection at the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA).

Dubbed the Bar Hill Comb, the piece is one of 280,000 artifacts from the museum included in an ongoing analysis. Researchers can only theorize the true purpose of the item. There was no evidence showing wear on the comb’s teeth, and a hole drilled into the top suggested it may have been worn as an amulet rather than used as a tool to style hair.

Stunning gem-covered gold earrings discovered in 800-year-old hoard in Germany

2 March 2023

A trainee metal detectorist in northern Germany recently hit on something his mentor never expected: an 800-year-old hoard of gold jewelry and silver coins that hints at the area’s trade connections.

The large hoard contained a dazzling collection of artifacts. “The hoard consisted of two very high quality gold earrings set with semi-precious stones, a gilded pseudo-coin brooch, two gilded stone-studded finger rings, a ring fragment, a small formerly gilded perforated disc, a ring brooch, and about 30 silver coins, some of them heavily fragmented,” Ulf Ickerodt, director of the State Archaeological Department of Schleswig-Holstein (ALSH), told Live Science in an email.

For decades, amateur and professional archaeologists have been working together to investigate the region of Schleswig-Holstein, and in particular the UNESCO world heritage site of Haithabu.

Bronze swords from Mycenaean civilisation found in Greek Tomb

15/03/2023

Archaeologists have uncovered three bronze swords from the Mycenaean civilisation during excavations of a 12th to 11th century BC tomb, discovered on the Trapeza plateau in the Peloponnese.

The Mycenaean civilisation was the last phase of the Bronze Age in Ancient Greece, spanning the period from approximately 1750 to 1050 BC. The period represents the first advanced and distinctively Greek civilisation in mainland Greece, notably for its palatial states, urban organisation, works of art and writing system.

ANCIENT GREEK TEMPLE DISCOVERY SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON RITUAL ACTIVITIES IN ANCIENT PAESTUM

ARCHAEOLOGISTS EXCAVATING IN ANCIENT PAESTUM HAVE UNCOVERED A TROVE OF ARTEFACTS, SHEDDING NEW INSIGHTS INTO RITUAL ACTIVITIES IN A RECENTLY DISCOVERED TEMPLE.

Paestum was a major ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Magna Graecia, located in present-day southern Italy.

The city was first settled by Greek colonists under the name of Poseidonia, which emerged into a major trading port and religious centre.

Civil War weapons thrown into river by General Sherman's forces recovered in South Carolina

November 20, 2023

Civil War weapons — including bullets, cannonballs and rusty swords — are among the debris pulled from the Congaree River in South Carolina during a year-long cleanup project targeting toxic coal tar on the waterway's banks.

The Civil War era haul wasn't surprising to Sean Norris, archaeological program manager at environmental consulting firm TRC. Previous underwater investigation "indicated the presence of multiple types of cannonballs and projectiles as well as hundreds, if not thousands of musket rounds," Norris told Live Science in an email.

In fact, historical records list thousands of additional items captured from Confederate troops. "We were not certain whether those items were deposited in the river along with the ordnance," he said.
